Lamka/Imphal, August 11 NNN UNA : Womenfolk in the southern Manipur’s Churachandpur district under the aegis of Widows Welfare Association (WWA) carried out a mass rally from the Public Ground of Hiangtam Lamka to Peace Ground of Tubuong from 11 am to 2 pm against the alleged discrimination, exploitation and subjugation of women.
About 500 women folk holding placards inscribed with slogans such as” Subjugation for Women : How Long “ ,” UPA Govt is Anti Govt” , “Soniaji Heal Our Wounds & Wombs “ , “Job Cards , Joke Cards” took part in the rally.
At the end of the rally, the WWA members submitted a memorandum to the state chief minister through the district deputy commissioner. A series of demands have been raised on the Chief Minister through the memorandum which include issuance of BPL Cards, Widow Pension Scheme, Job Cards under MGNREGS and Old-Age Pension Cards to the needy men and women.
They also demanded constitution of a high-empowered committee to monitor, supervise and redress the problems and grievances of women in the district and strict vigilant monitoring and supervising and Government offices, dealing and concerning with the widows and aged women in the state.
Establishment of fair price shops in Churachandpur district for the poor widows and needy women and the Widow Pension Scheme should be increased at Rs 1000 against the present amount of Rs 200, the memorandum further mentioned, urging the Chief Minster to constitute an effective and efficiant mechanism or measure to stop ‘raping and killing of women.’
The mass rally was jointly organize by Widows Welfare Association Asia and Churachandpur Joint Women Organization, which was supported by Zomi Mothers’ Association, Hmar Women’s Association, Mizo People’s Convention, Ima Leimaren Apunba Lup and Kuki Women’s Union.
Speaking to media person in the sideline of the peace rally, president of Churachandpur Joint Women Organisation J.L. Sawmi disclosed that Discrimination, Subjugation and Exploitations of women in Churachandpur district is not a new thing.
Various women organization and the womenfolk of Manipur intermittently petitioned the concerned authority, department/minister to redress their grievances and demands, the ruling elites and official more often than not, turned a deaf ear.
Ensue law-enforcement agencies so that women of Manipur walk freely and live with dignity in the whole areas of Manipur, Strict/vigilant monitoring and supervising of government’s offices, dealing and concerning with the widows and aged women in the state.
And establishment of fair price shop in Churachandpur district for the poor widows and needy women, increasing of women pension schemes to Rs. 1000/- from mere Rs. 200/- and constituting of effecting and efficient mechanisms/measures to stop raping and killing of women added SLSawmi.
