The 43rd death anniversary of Meingan Panmei falls on September 6.
According to Zeliangrong periodical called Makam Post, the Zeliangrong patriarch of Christendom and martyr for peace Meingan Panmei who was a Field Director, Zeliangrong Christian Association i.e. MBA-IV (under MBC & CBCNEI, the erstwhile CBCA), was assassinated by unidentified gunmen on September 6, 1969.
The magazine said Meingan Panmei deserves a befitting homage by the entire Naga society and the Zeliangrong people in particular. “He was a prominent member of Indo-Naga Peace Mision who contributed much towards bringing peace in Nagaland when Naga Independence movement was at its height, along with Rev. Michael Scott, M.K. Priyobrata Singh, Shankar Rao, J.P. Narayan, B.P. Chaliha, Rev. V. Phanitphang and a galaxy of many other peace activists. He was also said to have been in-charge of “map” of the ceasefire which covered the whole Naga inhabited areas,” according to Makam Post magazine.
This periodical then extends heartfelt solidarity to Mrs. P. Ariang and family members of the late leader on the occasion of the 43rd death anniversary observation at Tamenglong headquarters and shares the momentus remembrance with the deep pangs of sorrow for the irreparable loss of a dynamic multi-leader as well as promoter of raditional culture, identity, social unity and communal harmony among the diverse entities, educationist and upholder of women’s rights, socio-political and economic promoter and he bore a secular outlook as to accommodate all interests.
