Imphal, Sep 8 : An Army Lance Naik and another civilian were wounded after Peoples Liberation Army (PLA), an armed wing of Revolutionary Peoples Front (RPF) triggered an IED near Tiddim Ground along Tiddim road under Singjamei Police Station in Imphal West district on Saturday.
The wounded jawan has been identified as Harjindar, a Lance Naik of A-Coy, 18 Sikh Regiment, a native of Gurudaspur, Punjab and the civilian’s name has been identified as Akham Shanti, 31, son of A Modhu of Kwakeithel bazaar.
The blast occurred at around 8:10 a.m. when the militants targeted a foot patrolling party of the 18 Sikh Regiment by triggering an IED planted under a fenced plant growing on the Tiddim road median, wounding a Lance Naik and a civilian.
The RPF today claimed responsibility for the blast. Taohangsu Heiremcha, Chief Department Of Publicity Revolutionary People’s Front said when troops of 18 Sikh Regiment were on road opening party at Tiddim ground. PLA will continue to launch more attacks to drive out all security personnel it was claimed. It revealed that the PLA has put bombs in strategic places to attack troops.
People should stop demand removal of troops rather than asking to stop bomb attacks on troops it was added. Major casualties can not be inflicted on troops as care was taken not to inflict injuries on civilians. It asked Meira Paibi not to stage protest against such attacks. It was warned to all to stay from troops so that they are not injured.
It is worthwhile to mention that on September 5, two jawans of 28 Assam Rifles were hurt in another IED blast at Keisham Leikai, Keishampat in Imphal. The banned United National Liberation Front ( UNLF) had claimed responsibility for the attack.
Meanwhile, in view of the recent incident, involving planting and exploding of IEds by underground organisations causing innuries to public and security forces, and as part of preventive measures and to avoid any untoward incidents like bomb/IED blasts in the run up to the local body election in Imphal West district, the district police have sought the cooperation of the public and requested to help in preventing such incidents.
The district Superintendant of Police in a statement urged the public to act upon certain measures: avoid unnecessary crowding; do not allow unattended vehicle to be parked in fron of your house/shop etc. and alert/inform the police for any unattended/abandoned vehicle; do not touch any suspicious left objects; do not accept any gifts/packets from unknown person; check your surroundings for any unusual changes and check any suspicious behaviour of people/strangers.
