IMPHAL, Sep 19 MNS NNN: Two suspected militants were killed in a reported encounter with troops of 10th Assam Rifles near Don Bosco School, Phayeng under Lamshang Police Station in Imphal West district in the wee hours of Wednesday.
Reports said troops of 10th Assam Rifles who were on a routine patrol engaged in a fierce gun battle with an unspecified number of heavily armed militants along a road which connects the village of Abalok close to Don Bosco School located at Phayeng around 3 am, killing the two militants. The other militants fled the scene taking advantage of the darkness, said the police.
The police said personnel of 10th Assam Rifles stationed at Singda had been vigilant in view of the just ended Panchayat polls in Manipur when militants targeted private residences of candidates by throwing hand grenades.
One AK-47 rifle, 24 live rounds and one pistol were recovered from the two slain militants, while another IED and two Chinese hand grenades were further found inside two bags brought by them at the spot.
The bodies, whose identities are yet to be established, have been brought at the mortuary of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal pending post mortem.
A PIB(DW) press hand out said on receipt of reliable information about movement of insurgents in the area of Don Bosco Near Singda on 18/19 September 2012, troops of Red Shield Division launched an operation in the area of Don Bosco. At about 0300h the security forces located them and immediately challenged them to stop but they were fired upon by the armed cadres. The SF team retaliated and eliminated two armed persons while others managed to flee taking advantage of the darkness. During search of the body of the two persons, one AK-47 rifle, 24 live rounds of AK-47, one 32mm Pistol, three live rounds of 32mm Pistol, explosives approx 3 kg and two Chinese hand grenades were recovered. It was also revealed that the UGs were involved in the recent IED blasts that took place in Manipur in the first half of September 2012 and were planning to plant more IEDs to target the security forces. Police from Lamsang police Station took over the body and other recovered articles for further action.
Meanwhile, a powerful hand grenade was found planted at the residence of an employee of Manipur Secretariat on Wednesday morning.The bomb was found in the gate of the residence of one Heiningshubam Chaoba, 48, a driver at Manipur Secretariat hailing from Khagempali Pangkha Ningom Leirak, in Imphal West district.A team of bomb experts from Manipur police rushed to the site and retrieved the bomb which was later defused it elsewhere at Canchipur in the afternoon, police said. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the bomb threat.
