Imphal, Sept 22 NNN : Around 3000 Nagas participated in the gala cultural treat at Talkatora Indoor Stadium in New Delhi where Naga artists both from Delhi, Nagaland, Manipur, Myanmar and elsewhere showcased their numbers. Guru Rewben Mashangva and his son Saka from Manipur, Alobo Naga and the band from Nagaland, Redolent from Tamenglong (Manipur), Purple Fusion from Dimapur (Nagaland) and others enthralled the crowd at the stadium.
Naga youths residing in New Delhi formed a committee called ‘Nagafest’ and organised the event with the purpose of togetherness among the Nagas in the national capital.
The event was sponsored by Indigenous Foundation based in the United States of America.
Naga folk blues promoter Guru Rewben Mashangva said he was happy that he could not win in the recently concluded Manipur Panchayat election where he was a candidate. Rewben Mashangva flew to New Delhi for the “Nagafest” a day after the poll results were declared.
“I was not ready to join politics. I succumbed to the pressures from elders and people in my locality to be in fray in the Panchayat poll. Politics is a new craft for me. I was a novice in the field. I jumped into the fray in the 11th hour,” confessed Guru Rewben Mashangva. He however, alleged that had there been a clean and a fair polling, he would come out victorious. “But by the grace of God, I did not win. I’m returning to my first love i.e music,” stated Guru Rewben Mashangva.

Two day bandh called on TET from Sep 23 midnight

Imphal, Sept 22 (MNS/NNN):Five tribal students’ organisations in Manipur have on Saturday announced for a total 48-hour bandh in the five hill districts of Tamenglong, Churachandpur, Senapati, Chandel and Ukhrul that will begin from midnight of September 23 to show strong reaction against the apathetic attitude of the state Government towards setting up of Teacher’s […]

Imphal, Sept 22 (MNS/NNN):Five tribal students’ organisations in Manipur have on Saturday announced for a total 48-hour bandh in the five hill districts of Tamenglong, Churachandpur, Senapati, Chandel and Ukhrul that will begin from midnight of September 23 to show strong reaction against the apathetic attitude of the state Government towards setting up of Teacher’s Eligibility Test (TET) form distribution centres as well as exam centres in all the hill district headquarters.
The Joint Committee of Hill District Students’ Organisation (JCHDSO) of the Zeliangrong Students’ Union, Manipur (ZSUM), Senapati District Students’ Association (SDSA), Churachandpur District Students’ Union (CDSU), Naga Students’ Union of Chandel (NSUC) and Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) are showing nervously tense and angry against the state Government which is yet to meet the demand raised by them pertaining to the TET.
They said they will never in the future accept further assurances from the Government saying the issurance given by the state Education Minister to the five student bodies earlier regarding opening of TET form distribution centres and exam centres in the hill district headquarters has turned out be as “nothingness” because the minister has not yet taken up any step to implement the demand. They also said the Government lacks seriousness, particularly over tribal issues.
The Joint Committee addressed a press conference at the ZSU Manipur branch office, Namdullong near Khuman Lampak here. JCHDSO convenor Disuang Stephen said the state Government has not taken the TET issue seriously and announced that from now onwards, the hill student bodies will never accept further assurances from the Government except fulfilling of demands with immediacy.
The Government is not responding to the demand despite the assurance given to the student bodies in the earlier occasion and also the ultimatum served by the committee over the demand, the tribal student leader lamented.
He said the proposed 48-hour strike may be followed up by a serious of agitations in case the Government fails to initiate the right course of action so as to end the standoff.
TKS education secretary Ashung, who was also speaking at the press conference, warned any untoward incidents that may take place during the course of the shutdown in the five hill districts have to own up only by the state Government calling the demand a “serious matter” for the simple reason that they are demanding their rights.
“We are pushing for our rights to the Government. It is nothing if only the state Government works it out,” Ashung asserted.
During the proposed bandh, barring the media, there will be no any relaxation to any kind of activity, CHDSO informed.
It is worthwhile to note that the Kuki Students Organisation-General Headquarters (KSO-GHqs) had called off its proposed 48-hour Manipur bandh on September 18 following the assurance from the state government to avail the forms of Teacher’s Eligibility Test (TET) in the hill districts within two days’ time.
The state government representatives in a meeting with the student leaders on September 18 had assured the latter that the TET forms would be made available in the hill districts from September 20 onwards.
According tp Peter Mate, the examiniation of TET would also be held in the hill districts from next year onwards. “The state government has assured us this in written,” disclosed the KSO chief.
Education minister M Oken, Principal Secretary in charge of Education Suresh Babu and tribal MLAs including Preshow Shimray, Z Kikhonbou Newmai, Alexander Pao, Victor Nunglung, G Varte and Memcha Kipgen and KSO leaders had participated in the September 18 meeting.
The KSO’s 48-hour Manipur bandh was to begin from 5am of last Wednesday in protest against the non-issuing of TET forms in the hill districts.

Border dispute in NE

AIZAWL, Sept 22 NNN : Border disputes among the North Eastern states have been, to some extent, responsible for creating differences between two groups of people across the borders or misunderstanding between two neighbouring governments or even to the degree of exchanging of fire between security forces of the two neighbouring states.
Border disputes between Assam and Nagaland, Meghalaya and Assam, Manipur and Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, and Mizoram and Assam.
In the latest such problem, the administrations of Mizoram and Assam have taken measures to prevent any escalation of volatile situation between the two states on Saturday.
Tension prevails in the Assam-Mizoram border since last week following the allegation hurled by Zoram National Party (ZNP) that Assam was trying to grab the land of Mizoram. Adding fuel to this tension was yesterday’s incident where a border pillar was found dismantled at a place called at Dhalai in southern Assam. The villagers in Assam alleged that people from Mizoram side came and destroyed the pillar. Assam and Mizoram share a common border of 123 kilometres. However, the people residing in the Mizoram side counter alleged that a pillar was erected near Vairengte in Mizoram by authorities from Assam side claim as their land.
Meanwhile, Mizo People’s Convention (MPC) president Lalhmangaiha Sailo said the dispute can be settled by constituting a coundary commission that will hold negotiation with the concerned higher authority.
Saying that over the past years various political parties and leaders of Mizoram state had dealt the issue of border dispute with the neighbouring Assam state “but till date no solution is in sight.” MPC proposed that the problem on the boundary dispute could be solved by constituting a boundary commission and by way of negotiation.
Lalhmangaiha Sailo then claimed that the boundary line accepted by Mizoram is that of the one demarcated by the Mizo chiefs and the British Government in the year 1875. “However, in the passage of time, the Assam state does not accept that boundary line and therefore dispute on boundary has occurred between the two states since the time of District Council,” the Mizo People’s Convention (MPC) chief added. Lalhmangaiha Sailo then expressed his wish that the present Mizoram government may approach the central government and ask for constituting a boundary commission.
“One surprising thing in the political history of Mizoram is that when Mizo National Front (MNF) and the Government of India signed the Peace Accord on July 31, 1986, there was no mention of the boundary dispute between Assam and Mizoram. Whether the MNF did not think about it at all, or the MNF leaders could not convince the Indian Government leaders on the matter, no one knows. If there is any one who can give the answer to this question, it would clear the confusion,” MPC president Lalhmangaiha Sailo pointed out.
Mentioning that safety of the land, safety of the community, safety of the religion are the three foundations of his party, the MPC president said, Mizoram needs these three things more than ever before.
It can be noted here that Manipur and Nagaland border dispute at Jessami in Ukhrul district is yet to be solved. Clashes of villagers from both the sides have been happening from time to time. The latest of violent incident in the Nagaland-Manipur border occurred as recent as a month ago.
The Nagaland-Assam border dispute at Merapani area has been a cause for worry. Burning of houses and even killings have been occurring occasionally with no solution in sight.
Meghalaya-Assam border dispute at Langpih is the subject of a long-running dispute between the Meghalaya and Assam state governments.
The British annexed the village to Assam’s Kamrup district, but then after Independence (after 1947), it was assigned to Meghalaya state. The Meghalaya government claims that Assam’s 1951 demarcation shows the area as part of a district in what would later become Meghalaya state. However, in 1972, Assam’s new demarcation showed the area as part of its own Mikir Hills district, the present Karbi Anglong district.

Blame game serves no purpose. The situation now calls for all to stand united and give go ahead signal to the Government to take up policies and programmes that will improve economic condition of all people living in the country. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohon Singh opened his heart and mind yesterday when he addressed the nation on DDK on the following issues FDI, diesel price hike and LPG cylinder. He categorically stated that no Government wants to put burden on its own people. He compared the present situation with that happened in the early nineties. A major decision taken then in 1991 during Narasimha Rao regime when he was the Finance Minister averted the catastrophe that loomed large. Earlier India survived by mortgaging gold. The present situation is little different from what happened in the past. But the situation now calls for allowing foreign direct investment in retail sector as it will improve financial position of the country. He was of the view that the country and its people will reap fruit from such policy. He came down heavily on the opposition parties, which misled the common masses on the issue. He defended Government decision to subsidise only six cylinders per family saying this will not affect the economy of the poor and common masses. More gas is used by rich families. Rich families can afford the gas at its original price. But the opposition parties do not trust the UPA Government on these issues. They even went to the extent of calling Bharat bandh and Trinamol Congress withdrew support to the UPA Government. Congress might have been heaving a sigh of relief when Trinamol separated ties with UPA. Mamta’s party was a liability to the smooth sailing of UPA. She will lose. Left Front has gained. This will be revealed when the elections are held in West Bengal in the near future. The entire masses understand what is happening in the country. Amazingly opposition and Trinamol Congress think otherwise. In the name of fighting for the common masses more problems had been created. Manmohon Singh was worried when the Government ideas on the matter were misinterpreted by the opposition parties. So, he took the microphone himself. Having heard his statement everything stands out crystal clear. It is time his Government go ahead with all the policies it has unveiled. The general masses are desperate to see what comes out after the implementation of FDI. A leader like Dr. Manmohon, who was hailed in the past as the best Finance Minister for the bold decision taken when he was Finance Minister under the Narasimha Rao regime cannot be misconstrued. But he needs support from all. He has openly said future generation will not pardon present regime if it fails to take up bold and gigantic task of improving economic condition of the country. What more are you looking for. We all are behind you. Go ahead. India with one billion people cannot live with begging bowls. If the entire people of the country are convinced opposition cannot be the exception. They too are representatives of the people. Having heard the prime Minister’s address to the nation their thinking on the matter too might have gone sea change. There will be no more resistance to the FDI. Let the fruit be reaped early.
