Imphal, Oct 4 (MNS/NNN): At least seven police personnel were wounded after heavily armed miltants ambushed a convoy of Chandel district Superintendent of Police (SP), who had escaped unhurt, at H Mongjang village near Khudengthabi close to Moreh Police Station in the border district of Chandel on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the wounded police personnel, including two who were critically injured, have been brought back to Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal after receiving first aid at the post of 9 Assam Rifles at Khudengthabi.
Superintendant of Police, Chandel, Elangbam Priyokumar said the attack was carried out by Co-ordination Commitee (CorCoM), a united group of seven different militant organisations which include major groups like the banned Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF/PLA), United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and Kanglei Yaon Kanna Lup (KYKL).
The police officer said the attack was a target to the state police but the real motive was unknown.
Additional forces reinforced after the attack carried out operation in the area to hunt the assailants. However, no reports of arrest was received so far.
The attack took place at around 1:50 pm when Chandel Superintendant of Police along with Deputy Commissiner, Chandel were returning towards the district headquarters after attending an Indo-Myanmar Liaison meeting held at Tamu in the neighboring Myanmar bordering Manipur.
Two roadside bombs which the police said to be IEDs exploded within seconds of each other struck the convoy of the Superintendant of Police at a hilly spot in H Mongjang village, injuring seven police personnel but he escaped the attack unhurt.
A gunfire was also broke out after the blasts. The militants hiding in the hill steep launched another attack on the convoy by heavy firing just after the explosions. The police retaliated. Police said no casualties in the encounter.
The two blasts struck the first escort vehicle and then the rear just as the vehicle Priyokumar was riding in went passed the site.
The police and the Assam Rifles personnel who were later enforced after the attack recovered another bomb planted in the area, police said.
Meanwhile, in the evening, Chandel MLA and other top state police officials visited RIMS where the seven police personnel are undertaking treatment. The two personnel seriously injured in the attack have been referred to Shija hospital, Langol as their condition deteriorated.
The seven constable injured personnel were identified as Chinkholen Aimol, Athang Aimol, Chongte Chothe, Badan Meitei, Medul Maring, Morung Maring and Alensang Maring .
Out of the seven injure personnel Chinkholen Aimol and Medul Maring are said to be in critical condition.
HQ IGAR S said in a statement that at around 1405h Convoy of SP Chandel was ambushed at a place 4 km from Khudenthabi toward Moreh when the convoy of police was on move to Imphal. On hearing the news the Assam Rifles activated its resources and rushed to the ambush site with reinforcement, Ambulance and Doctor to provide first aid to the injured persons. The troops on reaching the ambush site sanitised it and provided first aid. During this incident DGAR and IGAR (South) were also present at Moreh, on hearing the sad news both the Generals officers living to the true sprit of Assam Rifles and friends of Manipur visited the ambush site and took stock of the situation. Subsequently the injured were evacuated to Imphal alongwith the convoy of DG Assam Rifles.
