IMPHAL, Nov 7 MNS/NNN: Two powerful IEDs exploded in two separate places of Imphal West district and Thoubal district of Manipur on Wednesday, injuring three civilians including one woman and two jawans of Sikh Regiment.
The first blast took place at Ghari Makha Leikai along the Tiddim road (Airport road) in Imphal West around 9:10 am when a powerful IED planted by suspected militants at the road median set off, wounding five persons including three civilians and two jawans belonging to 18 Sikh Regiment, police said.
The wounded civilians were taken to Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) while the Army personnel were rushed to the unit hospital of the regiment for treatment.
The injured were now out of danger, the police said.
The civilians have been identified as Pukhrambam Rohen, 16, son of P Suranjoy of Nambol Pukhrambam, Thoubal district, Khangebam Shanti, 52, wife of Kh Modhubir from Kumbi Setupur Maning Leikai in Bishnupur district and Ningthoujam Dilip, 33, son of N Ibotombi, a resident of Airport Colony, Imphal West.
The identities of the injured Army jawans were not known.
In the first incident, the IED exploded just as a water tank of the 18 Sikh Regiment stationed at Imphal Airport reached Ghari Makha Leikai. The police said that the windshields of the Army vehicle were damaged in the blast and that the two Army personnel were injured when the broken glass hit them.
Dilip sustained injuries in the right leg in the bomb attack. He was driving a van when the incident occurred. The bomb shrapnel hit him and also broke the van windscreen.
The blast also struck another school bus driving behind the van, injuring Rohen, a class 11 student of Comet Higher Secondary School, Ghari. The bomb shrapnel hit his neck. Shanti, an Anganwadi worker was also injured in the explosion when she was hit in her buttocks. She was walking on the roadside at the time of the blast.
In the second incident, another IED was exploded near Slopeland Public School, Khongjom along National Highway-2 (Imphal-Moreh road) but none was injured in the blast. The explosion took place around 10:40 am.
Meanwhile, a TMT explosive bomb weighing 2 kg was recovered near Wangbal Sericulture Office around 6:30 am, police sources said. The bomb was found by a patrol team of 15 Assam Rifles. Bomb experts from Thoubal Police Station later retrieved the bomb and defused it safely at Thoubal Khunou, they added.
