Imphal, July 4 NNN: A public meeting held today at Noney bazaar in Manipur’s Tamenglong district related to the recent killing of six NSCN-K militants decided to call a 24-hour total bandh in the Zeliangrong tribe majority areas of the North Eastern states including Manipur beginning July 8 midnight.
The meet participated by hundreds of people from different walks of life of the district also called for immediate justice to the families of the victims and an independent inquiry into the incident by instituting an impartial Special Investigation Team (SIT) to book the security personnel under the law of the land.
The 10 Assam Rifles had claimed that the six NSCN-K militants were gunned down in an encounter in Shonglong village about 50 km from Noney bazaar on June 22.
At the same time, the meet urged the Government of India to expedite the Indo-Naga peace talks to resolve the vexed Naga political problem at the earliest.
All the AR posts should be removed from the entire Naga milieu, most of the speakers demanded.
The participants afterward burned effigies of Col Ajay Sharma of 10 AR and Major Gagan in protest against the Shonglong incident.
The public meeting was jointly organised by Zeliangrong Baudi, Manipur (ZBM), All Zeliangrong Students’ Union (AZSU), Zeliangrong Youth Front (ZYF) and Zeliangrong Students’ Union, Manipur (ZSUM).
The six NSCN-K militants killed in the reported gunbattle were Chujanglung Dangmei, Leikampao Thaimei, ST Moningam Anal, Majadi Panmei, Ngoubui Newmai and Laban Rongmei.
