UKHRUL, March 26: At a time when employment prospect is shrinking in all spheres at an alarming rate, the Ukhrul District Handloom and Handicraft Federation (UDHHCF), an Ukhrul based society working for preservation of Tangkhul traditional values through artistic creations, comes to the rescue of over twenty thousand weavers and artisans of the district and provide them with options to make a living.

Convenor of the federation, Raiping in an interaction with media persons here said that currently a total of 150 Weavers Co-operative Societies and 100 SHGs are already operating under UDHHCF whose office is located at Phungreitang West in Ukhrul town.

“Altogether we have twenty one thousand weavers and handicraft artisans who are earning their livelihoods under this federation.”

Our federation was instituted in the 2011 and during this span of two years, we have addressed unemployment issue in a big way, Raiping asserted.

“Any weaver who works in the production earns Rs 8000 to 20000 per month depending upon the quantity of work they do.” he further revealed.

“Our products include traditional clothing, handicrafts, embroidery and flower items,” Raiping said before adding “today our products are gaining popularity among other communities and thus demands for our products are rising these days.”

Disclosing that the society already has showrooms at Ukhrul, Imphal and Delhi, he exuded hope that it now plans to open showrooms at Somra Track, Shillong and also abroad in Mandalay.

IMPHAL, March 26: Manipur State Kala Akademi under the aegis of Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi organised the Tenth Manipur State Art Exposition at Manipur State Art Gallery, Department of Art and Culture in Palace Compound on Wednesday.

Secretary, Manipur State Kala Akademi, Dr K Sobita Devi stated that the exhibition of 42 works by 34 artists including 24 pantings, nine sculptures, seven graphics and two drawings have considerable merit.

Sanajaoba Tenshuba was awarded in panting, Th Tulachandra Singh in sculpture, S Samuel and L Gandhi in graphic, N Rajesh Singh in drawing and they were all awarded Rs 10000 each with a certificate by the chief guest of the function, National Lalit Kala Akademi Awardee Th Tombi Singh.

Speaking at the function, Th Tombi Singh urged the artist to work on traditional paintings which is rare to witness in the state.

He elaborated that a well-known artist should have a sense of poetry, painting, music, drama, literature from which he can produce meaningful art. The artist must possess a feeling of aesthetics and spiritual.

He continued that in the states of Assam and Tripura the arts is developed but the state could not develop it even though the state have lots of skills in arts.

The state could not organise national exhibition of arts to showcase the artists of the state due to lack of various problems faced by the state, he asserted.

He opined that the state government must try to organise such kind of national exhibitions concerning the talented artist of the state which will also give a room to showcase their works.

IMPHAL, March 27: A statement of the United Revolutionary Front, Manipur has said that the outfit on behalf of the Peace Talk Committee (PTC) (ie comprising of three KYKL/MDF, KCP/MC & URF has submitted a memorandum to the secretary (Home) MHA, Govt of India urging for necessary pre-emptive security measures of MoU group leaders, cadres and families.

It has highlighted that MoU groups are being threatened with dire consequences from anti-talk groups. It continued “we are being treated as sub human being by the State Govt and State Police. If such treatment is further continued, it may compel us to go back to the jungle again. However, the matter is at best left to the wisdom of MHA, Govt of India.”

IMPHAL, March 26: With none of the candidates who had filed nomination withdrawing their candidature till Wednesday, altogether 10 candidates are in the fray for the Manipur Schedule Tribe reserved Outer constituency which will go to the polls on April 9, 2014.

On the other hand, a meeting in connection with the election was held at the conference hall of the Returning Officer T Ranjit attended by election observers concerned, assistant ROs and SPs of the five hills districts. The DCs of the Hill districts are acting as AROs.

It is also said that Lamlalmoi Gangte who filed his nomination paper with a CPI (ML) ticket, however, since he failed to submit the party president’s approval, the RO made him an independent candidate.

JIRIBAM, March 26: A two-day Life Skills Training program organised by the Hill Cross English School, Jiribam at its school campus concluded today.

The training program was inaugurated by Thongan Gonmei, principal, Hill Cross English School, Jiribam on March 25 and participated by 15 teachers and 50 students.

During the opening session, Aziknga Kahmei, M Sc in Counselling Psychology who was the external lecturer of Woodland Nursing Institute Shillong and the School Counsellor of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Loktak Project, Manipur attended as resource person and delivered on the topic “Peer pressure, substance abuse -personal hygiene – career counselling – anger management – HIV AIDS – inter personal relationship and self-esteem.”

During the closing function of the two days life skill training program, Elean Gonmei, Jiribam Coordinator of the Hill Cross English School graced the function as chief guest. And an interaction program on role play, movie show, slide show and documentary film were also held at the end program.

Sagolmang locals erupt after man killed in physical assualt

IMPHAL, March 26: A man was beaten to death allegedly by a group of persons for stealing the ‘Anji’-symbol of the United Friends’ Oragnisation or locally known as Satjal from a Satjal compound at natum CHing opposite to the Sagolmang Police station.

The incident led to a mob dismantling the house of three persons who had called out the man this morning.

This morning around 7.30, Huirem Naba, 44, son of Jilla of Longsum Mayai Leikai was called out from his residence and led him to UFO compound for a talk by six individuals from his locality, informed a source.

There he was physically assaulted on the charges that he had stolen the ‘Anji’ from the compound last night.

Soon after, two persons from the group took him to the local community health centre, where the doctors declared him brought death.

Meanwhile, on getting information about the incident, a huge mob of locals converged and directed their ire towards the six who had called Huirem Naba from his residence.

The mob dismantled the houses of three of the six who have been identified as Thangjam Bisho, his elder brother Thangjam Ibomyaima and Yaikhom Jiten all from Heikrak Mapal Makha Leikai.

However, timely intervention of the police led by SDPO Lamlai Lukham controlled the mob from damaging another house belong to a fourth individual who is identified as Naorem Shoba of Lowshangkhong Mayai Leikai.

The two others who called out Naba are yet to be identified.

Meanwhile, police have picked up the body and deposited it at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences Morgue for post mortem.

Locals had placed the body at the local community hall at Sagolmang declaring that the body will not be claimed until all involved in the crime are arrested.

Police have also taken up a case regarding the incident.

On the other hand, the locals of Longsum conveyed an emergency meeting in their locality regarding the incident late in the evening today.

IMPHAL, March 26: In view of maintaining law and order situation during the 16th Lok Sabha election in Thoubal district which will be held on April 9, the district police in coordination with Excise department under the supervision of K Radheshyam Singh, SP of the district has on Wednesday destroyed confiscated India made foreign liquors and locally prepared liquors along with utensils which were used for preparing local liquor.

The individuals who were arrested along with liquor and materials were released by paying fine under Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act, 1989.

In this connection, the Excise Inspector of the Thoubal District Th Priyokumar told media persons that the destroyed liquor items were confiscated in the raid conducted at Kairembikhok, Kakching Lamkhai, Khongjom Keithel and Khangabok. He further stated that such raid will be going on in view of the upcoming parliamentary election.

BISHNUPUR, March 26: The Bharatiya Janata Party Oinam Mandal Committee has organised one day political conference for 16th Inner Manipur Parliamentary Election 2014 on Tuesday at Ngaikhong Gandhi Bazar in Bishnupur district.

The ex-union minister and State BJP president Th Chaoba, party leader Kangjamba, social worker Kh Romeo and others attended the function as presidium members.

During the conference, Th Chaoba said if the BJP forms government at the centre, the government will take the Loktak Project under it, which is now maintained by a private company at present.

He had further appealed to the people to vote for the BJP candidate.

A similar meeting was also held at the Ningthoukhong Public Park, the same day.

IMPHAL, March 26: A combined team of Imphal West Police Commandos and 40 AR under the supervision of Addl SP (Ops) Imphal West K Meghachandra arrested three members of KYKL on Tuesday. The three arrested are Soibam Ningol Memcha alias Ibema,35, daughter of late S Tombi Singh of Charangpat Mayai Leikai, Md Sakin Ahamad,26, son of Md Najiruddin of Sora Awang Leikai (driver of the seized Maruti Van) and Lourembam Dhiren Meitei,36, son of late L Ibocha Meitei of Taothong, Lamsang were arrested from Meitei Lamkhai Lilong Chajing along NH-2.

Three hand grenades with detonators, fifteen extortion letters of KYKL addressed to officials, businessmen and individuals, four mobile phones, a sum of Rs 2,000 along with a Maruti Van bearing registration number MNO4-9985 were recovered. A case has been registered at the Singjamei Police Station.

In another incident on Tuesday, Thoubal District Police commando team arrested an MRRF (Manipur Naga Revolutionary Front) cadre of the Len faction at the junction of Mayai Keithel, Yairipok. Athary Hormi Tangkhul, 36, son of A Kahaoson Tangkhul of Shungriphai village who was involved in extortion of money from the general public in and around Ningel,Chandrakhong and Mayai Keithel, Thoubal District was arrested during frisking at the junction. A case has been registered at Yairipok Police Station for investigation.

Meanwhile in a similar frisking conducted at Arapti Lamkhai, a Thoubal Police Commando team arrested a self-styled Lieutenant of UNLF, Ningthoujam Dhanajit alias Abotomba alias Bobby Singh,42, son of late N Jadumani Singh of Keishamthong Elangbam Leikai. A case was registered at Waikhong Police Station for investigation.
