“Must not open umbrellas when there’s heavy rain in Delhi”

IMPHAL, May 27: The Congress should not surrender to the newly elected NDA government at the centre. This was stated by Commerce and Industry minister Govindas Konthoujam during the commemoration

IMPHAL, May 27: The Congress should not surrender to the newly elected NDA government at the centre. This was stated by Commerce and Industry minister Govindas Konthoujam during the commemoration of the 50th death anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru at the Congress Bhawan on Tuesday.

The minister mentioned that the recently elected central government led by BJP has come to power after a 10 years gap and in such a moment Congress workers should not surrender and be as committed and responsible as before.

“Politics is all about riding the wave which goes up and down and no external force can affect the party’s unity. The need of the hour is to believe in our strength and the party. The Congress led UPA-I and II might have been defeated in the LS polls due to the party’s flagship programmes not reaching to the people on time,” he said.

Stressing that the Congress’ flagship programmes also include many historic schemes, he said those programmes intended for the welfare of the people will be delivered to them on time in the future when the Congress regains power at the centre.

“We must help realise the various dreams of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru which he wanted for people’s welfare. As an important political figure of India and for taking an important role during the freedom movement, he became the first Prime Minister of India. We must follow in his path to serve the people as Congress workers,” the commerce and industry minister said.

During the function, Social Welfare minister AK Mirabai said she is proud to be a Congress worker from the beginning of her career.

“The Congress has a different ideology from other parties that includes a sense of sacrifice, passion and love for truth etc,” she said, “after 10 years, the NDA has come to power at the centre led by Narendra Modi as the 15th Prime Minister of India recently. We should not spew venom to others without knowing our own reality. At this moment, our Congress party should remain united. Even though BJP has come to power at the centre, it would not affect our state. We should not open umbrellas here when Delhi has a heavy rain.”

During the 50th death anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the vice-president of Manipur Pradesh Congress committee T Mangibabu, general secretary Manga Vaiphei, newly enrolled MLAs RK Imo, K Thamarjit, P Brojen, Zemheinlung Pamei, S Bira were present.

The 50th death anniversary of Pt Nehru showed a sparse crowd in the Congress Bhawan unlike other previous functions of the Congress party.

CHANDEL, May 27: Before the onset of monsoon in the State, villagers of Chandel District have initiated repairing of the deplorable road stretch from Pallel to Modi Village via the district headquarters today.

The road repairing work of the 22 kilometres long stretch has been taken up under the initiative of Chandel Naga People’s Organization (CNPO) following the State’s failure to repair it in the last few years.

Since 8 in the morning, a large number of villagers including women residing along the road came out with spades and shovels to mend the potholes with pebbles and sand transported by trucks.

While some others drained out the water logged in the potholes from the middle of the road.

While expressing gratitude to the district administration, commanding officers of both 20 Assam Rifles and 8th Manipur Rifles, Contractors’ Association of Chandel District, tribe leaders of the Seven Naga Tribes and villagers for their cooperation and assistance, Ws Kanral Anal, president of the CNPO said that the repairing work was taken up as the State government has failed to repair it since the last few years.

The deplorable condition of the road made the people of the district poorer as more fuel are consumed, vehicles often break down and further affecting the health of the commuters who frequent the road, he said.

Further, he questioned that is there any government in the state. If there is a good government, he appealed to repair the said road at the earliest.

Yuva morcha says intentionally timed to blanket Modi swearing in
IMPHAL, May 27: The BJP Yuva Morcha has accused the State of having ulterior motive in the May 26 power-cut, which it says was perfectly timed with the swearing in ceremony of Narendra Modi as the 15th Prime Minister of India.

The power cut had resulted in the people of the State missing out from watching the historic moment, the Yuva Morcha said today.

The BJYM, Manipur radish today called a press meet at the office of the BJP.

Addressing the media, president Malesh said yesterday’s event was a historic moment for the country.

But it is really unfortunate and disheartening that the entire State missed out from the ceremony due to power cuts.

The ‘historic ceremony’ was attended by leaders of the SAARC countries and was attended by around 4000 important persons and was broadcasted in 18 different languages, he announced.

He said the power supply resumed just after the ceremony ended after, it was cut off at 6pm Monday.

According to the president, people thought of it to be just normal power-cut which is quite frequent in the State.

“When we inquired with the Electricity Main department, we were told of a problem at Yurembam main station,” he said.

However, the power came just as the swearing in ceremony concluded, he continued.

Suspicious of an ulterior motive behind the power cut, he said the youth brigade will find out whether it was deliberate and intentional.

And if in case it turn out to be intentional, anyone found involved will be punished befittingly.

Malesh said the youth brigade will go to the bottom of it.

General secretary, BJPYM H Rajesh said it was not only during the swearing in ceremony but there was similar power cut when Narendra Modi was delivering a speech during an election campaign at Imphal.

People who were unable to attend the public meeting were unable to listen to the leader speak, even though it was live telecasted on the local cable channel, he said.

He accused the Congress government in the State of being narrow-minded.
