IMPHAL, October 13: Reacting against the failure of the police to release two locals arrested in connection with the October 8 death of a VDF personnel in mob violence, residents of four localities of Wangjing area stormed the Thoubal Police Station today.
It may be mentioned that VDF personnel Md Aboca alias Ahamatullah, 28 was lynched by a mob for allegedly stealing a bicycle from Wangjing Wangkhei Sabal Leikai under Thoubal district on the night of October 8.
Two persons- secretary and joint secretary of the Zodiac Club Wangjing Wangkhei, who were picked up by the police in connection with the incident are yet to be released.
The residents of Wangjing area have been demanding the unconditional release of the two.
Meanwhile, in trying to control the mob which had stormed the police station, personnel of the Thoubal police resorted to firing tear gas shells, mock bombs injuring 10 persons.
Those injured in the police action have been identified as Laishram Inaocha, 45 of Wangjing SK Leikai, L Ibemmu, 45; P Lalita Devi, 50; S Dasumati, 56; M Tara, 50; M Borni, 42; Ch Suranjoy, 37 all of Wangjing Wangkhei, M Inaobi, 45, of Wagjing Tekcham Leikai M Savitri, 55, Wangjing Heitup-pokpi and S Damyenti, 60 of Wangjing Hodamba.
All the injured were treated at the Thoubal District Hospital. Five of them are stated to have received some serious injuries and are continuing treatment at the hospital.
According to eye witnesses, around 2pm, the locals came in vehicles and stopped at Thoubal-Yairpok crossroad and proceeded in a rally towards Thoubal Police Station.
Shouting slogans against stealing and the police for encouraging stealing, the mob tried to force their way into the police station.
The mob action was retaliated by the police with the firing of tear gas shells, and mock bombs.
Afterwards the protestors tried to meet the Thoubal SP, however, were informed that the SP is on duty at Heirok as the Chief Minister was on a visit.
