IMPHAL, November 1: The Naga Women’s Union had conducted a training of community leaders on the ‘Rights and Laws Related to Women’ for the tribe units from 25-27 October, 2014 at DSSS, Mantripukhri, Imphal.
A statement of the union said the women leaders who attended the programme were made aware on the Rights and Laws Related to women by the resource persons.
It said Chief Judicial Magistrate and Secretary, District Legal Services authority, Imphal East A Noutuneshwari Devi spoke on ‘Crime against Women and Its Legal Remedies’; senior advocate Manipur High Court Daniel Ramsan spoke on ‘Civil and Political Rights (Article No. 371c) and Village Authority Act and Women in Decision Making’; United Naga Council president L Adani on ‘Socio-Economic and Political Situations of Nagas in Manipur and Women Participation in Society’; UNC secretary Gaiduan Kamei on ‘ADC Acts and Women in Decision Making Mechanisms’; NPMHR South Sector convenor Chingya Luithui on ‘Indigenous Peoples’ Rights and Women’s’ and Additional Judge, District and Session Judge, (Fast Track Court), Imphal West M. Ibohal Singh on ‘Rights of Women with Reference to Tribal Women of Manipur.’
It said 30 women leaders participated and raised several questions during the interaction and discussion hours.
One of the resource persons noted that the future is in the hands of women, it said.
The resource persons said that women should not be suppressed for they have the right to come up with strength in the society, it said and added that they encouraged women should not wait for men to provide them a platform but take initiative to be rightfully placed in the decision making mechanisms as there is no legal obstacles.
Both men and women must dialogue and explore what is best for our society and decide our future together. Women should not be betrayed in our society by abuse of power or rights, the resource persons observed, said the statement.
