IMPHAL, March 27: All Manipur VDF Welfare Association has announced a 24 hour general strike starting from midnight pressing their demands.
It may be mentioned here that the association had announced yesterday that if the arrested VDF personnel were not released unconditionally before 12 pm today, they will lunch intense forms of agitation and as the arrested VDF personnel have not been released the general strike call came.
The association executives and members gathered at the Irabot Bhawan at BT Road in Imphal at around 1 pm today to discuss their further course of action as the government has failed to meet their demands.
However, a large number of Imphal West District Police surrounded the area and disperse the gathering.
The meeting was later held at an undisclosed location where they decided to call a general strike to press their demands to the government.
A press release of the association said it has been 8 days that the VDF have been on `arm down and pen down` strike demanding reasonable honorarium which matches with the present market, service security and 13thmonth pay.
Vidyalaya organised a simple reception function.
Speaking at the reception function, Kshetrimayum Robert, DC Chandel said education is not only about teachers teaching alesson to the students inside the class room but it is more about providing all round development to the students so that they can reap the benefits of being educated.
Besides assuring to appraise the higher authority about the needed school`s infrastructures, the Deputy Commissioner also appealed the local people to extend co-operation and provide social security to the KGBV.
Meanwhile, the All Manipur VDF Guardian Association has stated that it will boycott the Congress Government for ignoring their demands.
According to a release of the association, it condemned the government for arresting 16 VDFs and injuring several others. The association stated that the government must take responsibility if any of the 10,500 VDF personnel took the wrong path. It also stated that it will support the 24 hours general strike to be imposed from the midnight of March 27 till the March 28 midnight. In this regard, it has appealed the government to come to an understanding and also to release the 16 VDFs who have been arrested or else, representatives of the association will meet with the Prime Minister and submit a memorandum, it said.
