IMPHAL, May 13: Strongly condemning the incident of abduction of three and killing two labours at Thingsat Village president United Committee Manipur, E Nelson during a joint press meet held at its office located at Lamphel said that the incident was sinful and inhuman act on the part of the cadres of the Kuki Revolutionary Front, KRF.

The press meet was conducted jointly by UCM and All Manipur United Committee, AMUCO.

He said that the three individuals were abducted last Sunday, May 10, and the dead bodies of the two labours were found today by the security forces.

He said eight KRF cadres suspected to be involved in the murder case have been picked up by the security force for further interrogation.

The incident occurred 7 Km away from Mapao Village named Thingsat Village where the two labours were working in a 12 year old school going boy.

UCM president said that the incident seems to have the political agenda of creating communal disintegration in the state.

Mention may be made the Suspension of Operation, SoO, had been supposedly discontinued since last year. If this is so, he asked why the previous SoO cadres are being allowed to roam freely.

Calling for Government intervention before an undesirable situation arises in the state, he said that the Government should work out at their level best to sustain normalcy and to book the culprits according to the law.

Career and Beyond

Every profession has its moral codes, some written but most of the time unwritten. Journalism is no exception and indeed this is a question that has continued to haunt the profession since its inception. This is particularly so because journalism`™s best practices also are determined by a notion of objectivity that would have the journalist be simple observers and reporters of events and not be their participants. The troubling question is, to what extent can this journalistic definition of objectivity, especially in situations of human tragedies, remain ethical. Two powerful images should put this argument in perspective. One is of a certain freelance photojournalist, Kevin Carter, who won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for photojournalism in 1994 for his photograph of a severely famished, virtually dying, Sudanese girl toddler crawling towards a UN food centre some distance away, during a famine in this conflict torn nation, even as a vulture stalked her as if ready to pounce on her if she drops dead. The picture was first published in the The New York Times and it shocked the entire world, so much so that this prestigious newspaper had to issue an unusual editorial comment in a subsequent edition that the girl did make it alive to the UN food centre and that Carter chased away the vulture before leaving the scene. But the scene, and probably his inadequate response to the human situation apart from his journalistic instinct of making headline news of the event, haunted him so much ever after that he went into a depression he never recovered from. According to his father he was often found crying alone inconsolably. Carter ultimately committed suicide the same year he won the coveted prize.

The second image conveys a totally different picture of journalistic responsibility. Seventy five years after his death near the summit of Mt. Everest, on May 1, 1999, George Leigh Mallory`™s body was discovered during another one of numerous search expeditions spanning seven decades to find his, and his climbing partner, Andrew Irvine`™s, bodies. Bad weather however prevented a closer examination of the body on the day. On May 16, two men in the expedition, Andy Politz and Thom Pollard, carrying with them a tent and some supplies, returned to the spot for a closer look after lasting out a bout of bad weather at the expedition base camp. Pollard, had writing assignments including numerous offers for a book at the time. The two had with them a metal detector to try and locate the camera that Mallory was known to have taken along, and Kodak Company was of the opinion that the exposed film in the camera still could be processed as it would be well preserved by the perennial subzero temperature, and because the film in it was black and white, hence less prone to chemical degeneration. When they came to the body, Pollard`™s reaction was in his own words: `The sight of Mallory`™s foot protruding from the end of the rocks was the most powerful and humbling site of my life. It brought tears to my eyes.`

Then the two proceeded about trying to detect Mallory`™s camera. In the process, Pollard came face to face with Mallory. From Pollard`™s description, the likeness of Mallory was well preserved with calm but closed eyes. He had a golf ball size wound in the forehead with two shards of bones protruding out of it confirming he died instantaneously when he fell. Then the thought occurred that Pollard had a camera with him. But on second thought, and in consultation with his expedition partner Andy Politz, they decided it would be wrong to take a picture of Mallory`™s face, and so today the only picture of the dead legend`™s face, a man who possibly reached the summit of Mt. Everest three decades before Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay did but could not return to tell his tale, is what Pollard carried back in his memory. Politz did not even want to see the face and be burdened with the responsibility to tell what he saw. Here were two men who overcame the pulls of their careers and professional ambitions even at a moment they found the elixir to reach the pinnacle to keep within what they thought was the demand of human decency. But beyond the instant glory and material endorsements they would surely have received had they been less scrupulous, they earned something else. Respect and gratitude of the sane world, away from the maddening crowd of instant wealth and instant success seekers.

KRF militants acted like wild beasts says 12 year old who survived torture in captivity

IMPHAL May 13: `I would like to ask the murderers whether they have a mother, a sister or a brother. The animals need to be brought to justice,` stated Konthoujam

IMPHAL May 13: `I would like to ask the murderers whether they have a mother, a sister or a brother. The animals need to be brought to justice,` stated Konthoujam Radhamani, mother of the brutalized Bishal. Bishal who was released from captivity by cadres of the KRF and is presently hospitalized at RIMS hospital.

He was made to say at gunpoint that he belonged to a valley based UG group, Kangleipak Communist Party.

Minor Konthoujam Bishal (12 yrs) S/O K. Bikom and Radhamani from Haobam Marak, Loirembam Leikai was released on May 12 after two days of torture by KRF near Thingshat village about 5km from Mapou Khullen which comes under Senapati district.

`I am not going back to school, I am afraid, my body hurts all over,` Bishal told this reporter at RIMS.

He vomited when the fact came up that both his companions were beaten to death by the KRF cadres.

Bishal was staying with his maternal uncle, Momo Tongbram in Mapou Khullen for nearly three years and is a Class 6 student of the Needy Home Academy where his uncle teaches Mathematics.

On Sunday, the minor had gone out with two other masons to see the countryside as there was nothing much to do that day. While going towards the hillside, they had asked for directions towards Sekmai, and a village elder had pointed them towards the direction.

Bishal had phoned his mother till 4.30 pm that they were lost in the jungle but were trying to find their way back. After that, the mobile phone remained in switched off mode.

Bishal further recounted that they met some 10 persons in the jungle, who were wielding swords and had forcibly blindfolded and tied them up.

They were picked by the KRF militants near Thingshat village alleging them to be KCP members. `I repeatedly told them that I am a student but they point a gun to my forehead and force me to say I joined the KCP group since the last three days and recorded this statement.`

`After the three persons went missing on Sunday, three search parties went searching the following morning and one of the groups which included Tombi, Mocha and Tomba were again accosted by the cadres and mercilessly beaten up by the KRF militants.

Even when they said that they were a search party for the three missing persons, the KRF cadres denied having any knowledge of the missing persons or of the incident.` said Bishal`™s uncle.

On Tuesday, the militants called the headman of Maphou Khullen in the afternoon and gave instructions on who can come and meet them at Thingshat Village to take the boy back.

Family members and some locals numbering 10 people reached the spot at around 5PM.

Bishal`™s mother Radhamani recounted , `They said the duo died during interrogation,` without any remorse as if killing two innocent persons was nothing to them. They are animals, I fainted when they brought my son out in such a horrendous state. They are not humans,`™ she said.

They informed us that the two persons namely Abung alias Dayananda Moirangthem from Patsoi part-lll and Maibam Premananda from Haoram Keirel Lamshang were affiliated to the KCP groups and they had died during interrogation, T. Momo said.

Bishal narrates that his hand and legs were tied and beaten by several people. `My face was covered in a cloth and they poured water over my head, they all reeked of alcohol,` he said.

The militants gave Rs. 5000 to his mother for his treatment later. Radhamani said that the glass which they offered water stank of alcohol and many of them seemed to be inebriated.

After receiving information regarding the incident, a combined force of police and Assam Rifles cordoned the area and arrested 8 KNF cadres allegedly involved in the murder case today.

Further acting on information, the two dead bodies of Abung and Premanda were exhumed from two different locations in the area.

The two dead bodies are presently deposited at RIMS morgue.

In regard to the murder of the masons by the KRF, local residents of Patsoi area blocked the National Highway 37 near HVS brick field today demanding that the criminals be arrested and brought to justice.

Manipuri theatre in a disappointing stage: Padmashree Kanhailal

IMPHAL, May 13: Padmashree Heisnam Kanhailal is the founder of the Kalakshetra Manipur, an institute that started the tradition for an alternative theatre and that distinguished the maestro from his peer.

He is often described as the man who broke the new trend of theatrical expression in contemporary Indian theatre.

Since the inception of Kalakshetra in 1969, he has been continuing experiment with tradition for an alternate theatre. In the process his alternative theatre could be indentified with the live theatre that he ultimately conceived as the `theatre of the earth`™.

Some of his remarkable experiments that redefine the conventional theatrical expression were the Nupilan (women`s war against British) in 1978, Sanjennaha (cowherd) in 1979 with villagers at Umathel, a remote village in South Manipur. He also worked with the Paite community in Churachandpur district and produced Thanghou Leh Liandou in 1980.

In his first ever `Nupilan`™ production, Kanhailal gathered 100 market women of Imphal and inspired them to perform a non-proscenium act in an open air environment, re-enacting the confrontation of Manipuri women against the British soldier. The performance was performed at Johnstone school campus in the heart of Imphal and overwhelmed on lookers.

His journey through time to achieve what he is today was not an ordinary tale like many of those great artistes who have carved a niche for themselves.

He quit his Government job in pursuit of his theatrical dream which was later realised through the Kalakshetra.

A rendezvou with the maestro.

IFP: Congratulations on your recent achievement. What an incredible journey it has been from being a salesman at a Bata showroom in Imphal to winning the Padmashree and now the Mahindra Lifetime Achievement Award. When you look back, how do you think Manipuri theatre has changed over the years?

Heisnam Kanhailal: Indeed it has been a remarkable journey and very challenging too. I can see a lot of changes but not in not in a positive way but in a negative manner when we talk about the Manipuri theatre. It has been overwhelmed by commercialisation and it is at a very disappointing stage. What we are witnessing today is more of a salesmanship with less `artistic value`™. The integrity of the word theatre is diminishing fast.

IFP: It is a well-known story that you were expelled from NSD for not taking leave of absence after due permission. How do you think packing your bags and moving back to Imphal impact your theater? And how did the setting up of Kalakshetra happen?

H Kanhailal: The NSD episode I should say was the biggest point of my career. Had it not been for that incident I could have been stuck with the conventional theatrical wisdom and there might not be Kalakshetra. The rejection and subsequent frustration had led to the discovery of my intuition. I gradually started to evolve from my experiences. The semi-urban environment of the life of Imphal back then, the nature and traditions that surrounded me gave a vision and nostalgia beyond the mundane world. In order to translate my vision I started applying on my theatre. However I needed a concrete base to device by plan which later came in the form of `Kalakshetra`™. Many of my like-minded friends help me out in this venture especially my wife Sabitri who is one of the major collaborator as an actor.

IFP: You are seen as one of the group of alternative theatre directors who have embraced theatre as performed locally instead of being influenced by mainstream trends? How did this consciousness to move away from the mainstream happen? And how has this affected Manipuri theatre?

H Kanhailal: With regards to my alternative thinking I have already made myself clear. But, how much it affected the Manipuri theatre is the same as much as it has been in other part of the country.

IFP: What does the future spell for Manipuri theatre? Is it now possible to live by your trade?

H Kanhailal: Judging by the current trend as I have mentioned earlier about the `salemenship`™ I feel that the future of Manipuri theatre is very bleak. The present generation has lost the track and it is too late to rescue it. But, it does not mean that all hope is lost if we sincerely put our effort the Manipuri theatre can be revive afresh in the next generation.

IFP: In your entire career have you ever come across a promising `Theatre Directors`™ from the Northeast region?

H Kanhailal: Yes, indeed. In my entire career I have travelled many places with my Kalakshetra team. But, the dedication I see in some of the youths in Rabha tribal youths of Assam has amazed me. I have associated with the youths for 15 years now they have earned their name and ever expanding their own group. My followers like Sukracharjyo Rabha and Rayanti Rabha have been awarded Yuba Puraskar by Central Sangeet Natak Akademi, Delhi, are some name from the Northeast who can help spread my legacy.

IFP: What according to you is the play one should not miss this year?

H Kanhailal: There are few plays that I directed that I would like to suggest any theatre lovers to see like `Pebet`™, `Kabui Kei Oiba`™ `Dag Ghar`™ (Ranbindranath Tagore). But, if it comes to the one play one should not miss this year it obviously will be `Pebet`™ (1975) as it is still in Demand. Our Kalakshetra team has been invited to perform it in Hyderabad later this year.

IFP: Can you please name some of your favourite Actors?

H Kanhailal: My wife Sabitri, of course because she always has been a major collaborator of institute and the other one is Nasheerudin Shah. He is the only actor who is sincere enough when it comes to finding the artistic quality in an actor.

H Kanhailal has conducted 15 major workshops in the last twenty years for the actors from different cultural backgrounds in the country. The workshops so far conducted were particularly concentrated on his actor training system for live theatre. Workshops were organized nationally and regionally in different locations both city and rural as sponsored by National School of Drama and other cultural institutions/agencies. Thus he could produce a great following in the country. Since last ten years he and Sabitri have been conducting workshops for the second year students of NSD every year on his system of acting.

He conducted short term programmes on exposition of his system particularly for the young practitioners and academics. He could draw the academic attention of the young research scholars of the country and their participation in the practice thereof. He is the only theatre practitioner in the country on whose work young research scholars have been working for their M. Phils and Ph. Ds particularly from JNU, Jamia Milia Islamia, Assam University, Hydrabad University and so on.

Since 2012 he has been training young practitioners from France, Sweden, America, South Africa, etc.

Downfall of Cong not too far away: Chaoba

IMPHAL, May 13: Stating that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is not a communal party which only strive for Hindu people, president of BJP Manipur Pradesh Th Chaoba slammed the Congress

IMPHAL, May 13: Stating that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is not a communal party which only strive for Hindu people, president of BJP Manipur Pradesh Th Chaoba slammed the Congress party for gaining political mileage by bringing in religion in politics.

He was attending a public meeting cum flag hoisting of Th Wilinlungbou, BJP candidate from 12-Khengjang District Council Constituency under Saitu Assembly Constituency in Senapati district in the ensuing ADC election at the residence of the candidate today.

Speaking as chief guest, Chaoba charged the Congress-led government in the state with failure to work according to the needs of the people, saying that the BJP government unlike the Congress has been coming up with slew of schemes especially for the poor people.

The Congress government in the state has utterly failed to implement the Public Distribution System and provide potable water to the people. The series of inauguration of SDO, police station and other offices is just to appease contractors and serve certain purposes for the government. After its inauguration, there are no staffs in the offices, he said.

Chaoba contended that the inauguration of a 50-bedded hospital at Bungpa was done in such a manner that Chief Minister came in helicopter to inaugurate it.

When a 33 KV Power Station at Bungpa was inaugurated by the CM, people of the area had thought that there will be uninterrupted power supply in the area. Shockingly, just after the CM and his accompany left the area, the light went off. Later it came to know that that the light was supplied for a while by using a hired generator, he claimed.

Saying that the ensuing ADC election is a perfect occasion to show first exit door to the Congress, Chaoba mentioned that downfall of the Congress party is not too far away as it will suffer defeat in the upcoming Municipal Election as well as in the next general election.

He declared that many development programmes and schemes will be taken up in the hill areas if the BJP candidates win the ensuing ADC election.

Haokholet Kipgen, nation vice-president of BJP; Basanta Sharma, state general secretary of BJP; Tongmang Haokip, state executive member of BJP Manipur Pradesh; Thangkhulen Kipgen, president of BJP Sadar Hills and several other leaders of the party were also present during the public meeting cum flag hoisting ceremony.

Today also saw flag hoisting of P Rocky Rangtaina, BJP candidate from Mayangkhang Constituency and Ngamlen Kipgen, BJP candidate from 7-Keithelmanbi Constituency.

KSO Sadar Hills appeals public to bear with 7-day eco blockade

KANGPOKPI, May 12: The Kuki Students`™ Organization Sadar Hills has pleaded to the people of Manipur to bear with the ongoing seven-day economic blockade imposed by it on the National Highways within Sadar Hills that began yesterday midnight in the interest of justice.

Thangminlen Kipgen, president of KSO Sadar Hills admitted that various hardships will be encountered by the innocent public in the state due to the blockade but the organization has left no choice as the demand for justice to the innocent van driver who was to death has been ignored by the government.

He appealed to the people not to misunderstand the protest of the student body in the interest of justice rather come up with a constructive voice to wipe out the inflexibility of the government once and for all.

In Manipur, bandh and blockade has become the finest resourceful tool to draw attention of the government to address any issues. If the government tackles any problematical issues timely and accordingly, bandh and blockade will not be that resourceful and gain such famous stature, he said.

Cautioning that the government should be held responsible if any untoward incident arises during the blockade, the president of KSO Sadar Hills reiterated that the organization gave the government enough time to address and fulfill its charter of demands.

If the government does not fulfill the demands despite the blockade then the organization will be compelled to impose 24-hr total bandh, he warned.

He also cautioned transport associations not to violate the blockade with the help of security or any other means.

If BJP sweeps Tamenglong, Dolang will be developed as model ADC: Asnikumar

IMPHAL, May 12: If the BJP sweeps Tamenglong District, Dolang constituency will be developed into a model ADC segment in the State assured Moirangthem Asnikumar general secretary administration, BJP Manipur

IMPHAL, May 12: If the BJP sweeps Tamenglong District, Dolang constituency will be developed into a model ADC segment in the State assured Moirangthem Asnikumar general secretary administration, BJP Manipur Pradesh.

While addressing the flag hosting function held at Bitiang (Laphok) village under Dolang ADC segment of Nungba constituency for BJP candidate M Denial today, he further said that Congress government in Manipur has violated rights of people during last 13 years.

Leaders of Nungba are still cheating the people taking advantages during election time to mislead the public, he further said.

He said M Denial is a dynamic public leader. If the Tamenglong District can garner maximum seats of ADC with Denial as leader among 144 seats 19-Dolang will develop to a model ADC segment. He said he will introduce the ADC to Amit Shah national president BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Union Ministers of India.

Tamenglong District has God-gifted forest and natural resources which can be harnessed to boost the social economy of the place and the State and the BJP has taken a decision to make this happen, he added.

He said BJP and Congress can have a good contest in Tamenglong, especially for the Dalang ADC Constituency.

Referring to Gaikhangam, who is also from Tamenglong, he said though he is the Deputy Chief Minister, and considered the political tiger of Congress party he has only been making false promises.

What has he done in his extended 30 years politics career for the Dolang segment except gathering personal wealth, he asked.

Daniel is a simple opposition MDC member who has done lots of work for the people compared to Gaikhangam, he said.

Daniel has provided drinking water for Dolang people with funds sanctioned under centrally sponsored scheme which Gaikhangam did not even touch bother to access, he said.

Asnikumar said that ADC election is the semi-final match for the 2017 general election. If the BJP wins four to five of the six ADCs of the state, this will herald a BJP government in Manipur in 2017.

People should acknowledge that Congress has surrendered to underground groups. It is unbelievable that Gaikhangam, who is Home Minister, had the face to announce there will be Congress candidate for certain seats due to law and order situation in Hills districts, he said.

The Congress government has not reached governance in hill, and the Congress party is only known for three Cs, namely commission, corruption and compromise, alleged Asnikumar.

Daniel in his turn said `let us wash corruption by water`. He further said that for life, water is vitally needed but in our area water scarcity is one big problem. So during five years of MDC tenure as opposition, he kept first priority for provide safe drinking water for hills people. Next is development in the area, he added.

He said that 19-Dolang constituency has eight villages and six polling stations under Nungba Assembly Constituency which is also Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam`™s constituency. Yet road communication, health sector, education sector, PDS status have all remained abysmal.

He also charged that people have not received a single drop of SK oil and essential items of PDS items as yet.

The local MLA has been enjoying public money to lead luxurious life till today, he said.

If people give power again to Congress, the situation will be more dangerous in the area, he charged.

The ADC is not for any particular community be it Kuki or Rongmei or Chiru etc but for all the people`™s welfare, he said. We have PHC but no doctor and nurses; schools but no teachers. These institutions are only empty government buildings but with absent employees, said Daniel.

He said though the target was to provide water supply scheme for people under NEC funding in 2011, the State government kept stalling the project. So finally we had to approach Jitendra Union Minister for DoNER to visit the Dolang and witness the public grievances etc.

If all these schemes had been implemented in earnest, there would have been no difference between Hills and Valley in Manipur, he said. The current division between the two region was created by the Congress government he alleged.

Moreover, the State government is playing games during ADC election creating an artificial scarcity of petrol. This dirty politics of the Congress government, he said.

If the BJP comes to power this time in the ADC election, the party can abolish the corrupt Congress party in the 2017 general election, Daniel said.

In the flag hosting function, BJYM vice-presidents Y Gopi, K Bikramjit, K Robindro state executive member and Dr Y Antas Khan, executive member of the BJYM Manipur Pradesh were guests of honour.

Nagaland CM calls for trans-border unity of communities during NPF campaign launch

SENAPATI, May 12: A large team led by Nagaland Chief Minister, T.R. Zeliang and President NPF Central HQ, Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu comprising of several Ministers, MLAs and Parliamentary Secretaries along with NPF Central HQ Youth wing, NPF Central HQ Women wing and all the executive of the NPF Central HQ Kohima, came to Senapati to kick start the Autonomous District Council Campaign for the 86 candidates today.

All the 86 candidates inclusive of women candidates and Kuki candidates were introduced on the occasion by General Secretary NPF MSU, Honreikhui Kashung.

Father P.O. Sebastian pronounced the blessing prayer for unity and peaceful conduct of campaign after the gathering sang the inspirational song `Send the light`™ together.

Four candidates who won uncontested were also felicitated on the occasion.

Neiba Kronu, Parliamentary Secretary & Ministerial incharge of NPF, MSU said in his key note address said, `This is just the beginning for us to achieve our goals together.`

Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu, President, NPF Central HQ, Kohima, in his presidential address upheld and highlighted the party`™s tenets, `NPF stands for inclusive unity and takes all the hill peoples as our people. We are a highly democratic party.`™

He went further to say, `Our the party`™s constitution, calls for responsibility of all members towards respecting and preserving our egalitarian traditional values and culture. To adhere to party disciplines to uphold non-violence and refrain from any untoward incidents to be exemplary candidates and uphold the party`™s prestige in the region.`™

`NPF has made inroads into Manipur State like any other recognized political party in the country. We offer a platform for the hills people to unitedly defend our rights. We have made a humble beginning in Manipur by returning four MLAs in our first participation and are equally hopeful this time,`™ he said.

He was resolute about limiting free expression, `NPF is the oldest regional party and we want to be in good terms with everyone. Free expression tending towards factional attempt which is likely to jeopardize party`™s interest or incite communal tension and hatred among people is prohibited`™

On a note of anticipatory countering, he said `Meiteis are more advanced than hill people and understand the mandate of recognized and registered political parties. Hence we expect them to extend the big brother role as good neighbours. Manipur is in fact a smaller version of India`™s model of unity in diversity`™, he lauded.

On ties with BJP, he explained that they are natural allies and hence the competition in election should be on friendly mode. `Even if we have no links with BJP in Manipur, our leaders should be mindful of this aspect,`™ he added.

He stressed on party discipline `let us refrain from doing what is not in our party`™s tradition or culture.`

Regarding interference, the president said, `We want to implement our political agenda with clear conscience and cannot compromise for fear or favour.`

Chief Minister T. R. Zeliang acknowledged the security cover provided by the host Government and extended his warm invitation to the Manipur Chief Minister to visit Nagaland too.

At the very outset he proclaimed, `Nagas are one and we shall remain united!` He narrated the historicity of pan Naga movement since 1928 by Naga Club to the present political movement of the Nagas to live together under one administration.

Citing that Nagaland Legislative Assembly had four times passed a resolution on this aspiration, he said, `We should continue to strive for social and emotional integration as one people across the borders. Lets continue to hope that this collective dream would soon materialize.`™

He said, `Unity not at the cost of other communities`™ rights living in our midst. We intend to uphold and restore our rights within the provision of the established constitution and not to encroach upon others land and others rights.`

`This should not be misunderstood by other communities,` he reiterated.

If we forget our identity and ethnicity, we would remain a divided minority hence we need to collectively rebuild socially and politically to preserve our distinct identity. This is the main objective of the NPF`™s presence in Manipur: to give a common platform for all Nagas to stand as one. It is imperative to unite as tribals and as Nagas and reclaim respect in unity, he continued.

Instead of boycotting, it is better to participate so that we can change and improvise the system towards progressive development.

Autonomous District Council might need restructuring and more empowerment in functions and financial powers, he further said. Citing the unfortunate conduct of all official preparatory process of election held in Imphal instead of the districts, the Chief Minister questioned, `Where is your autonomy if you cannot conduct your Autonomous district council election in your own districts? It is a denial of our rights.`™

`If you vote for NPF, the party and the council will uphold the spirit of the real autonomy for all the tribals in the state. If needed, Nagaland government will also support you in this endeavour through NPF,`™ he assured.

Trust in NPF and vote for NPF, he appealed. NPF led DAN government was recently joined by the eight Congress Opposition MLAs and we are now successfully united for early solution to Naga political issue. We have collectively formed a Joint Legislature Forum to pursue the Naga political solution, through dialogue and not by arms towards a permanent peace in our land.

It is our hope and prayer to have a free and fair election for the upcoming autonomous district council election, he said.

The NPF central team was accorded a warm welcome by the host NPF.

Party leaders of all ranks from all the hill districts and hundreds of supporters attended the campaign kick-off programme today at the Senapati headquarter main ground.

Alyson Abonmai entertained the gathering with soulful country music.

Despicable Lust for Power

In Manipuri there is a saying `Angangdi ningthadagi khangbani` (the child is known from his nappies). The ring of Freudian foreboding is remarkable. In layman terms, in the Freudian personality dynamics, the infant is a bundle of raw instincts or `Id`. It responds to hunger, fear, pain etc, only. It urinates and defecates at will, cries when hungry or afraid, laughs when pleased etc. The first intrusion in its life of what Freud calls `Superego`, or the norms and traditions of civilisation, is generally in the form of toilet training: `No wetting while in the bed`. As the child grows older, the demands of the Superego too grow. The child begins to be told which behaviours are acceptable and which not, first at home, then in school and college. Consequently, the conflict between the demands of the `Id` and the `Superego` also gets progressively more intense, and in the negotiation between the two contrary demands, is born the rational `Ego`. Personality disorders of different hues are attributed to the inability of the `Ego` to effectively strike a balance between the two demands. Quite obviously, without the `Superego` there can be no civilisation. But when the `Superego` gets too overbearing, instinctual drives in the child would become dwarfed. This is why the development of the rational `Ego` is vital, and this is precisely what the Manipuri adage refers to, when it said the child is known from its nappies. It refers to the natural aptitude of the child to respond to civilisational norms without detriment to its own personal integrity. It is indeed amazing that this was said before Freud, but interpreting it the other way around, the unlikely congruence of traditional wisdoms and Freud`™s theory, is also because Freud depended in a major way on literature to construct his theory. The fact that his best known contribution to the lexicon of psychology, `Oedipus Complex`, is straight out of literature is evidence enough.

We dig up this discussion again in the light of the recent show of absolute degeneration of civilisational values in the incident in which the escorts of Speaker Th. Lokeshwor savagely beat up a man because he did not give way to the Speaker`™s convoy promptly enough. This is despite the fact that the Assembly was not in session and therefore there could not have been any urgent official business for the Speaker. But beyond these individual transgressions of civilisational propriety by those who wield State power, there is a larger canvas on which a disturbing paradigmatic change in the definition of a leader in sponsored economies like Manipur has been happening. Half a century ago, leaders who emerged were respected figures who earned their reputations through humility and dedicated service to society. Most of them were school teachers who endeared their communities with their service, thus the honorific `Oja` associated with the older generation of political leaders. In the decades that followed, a small transformation in the nursery of political leadership happened, and apart from the Ojas, there also entered a league of retired bureaucrats with sizeable purses. Although it is known that corruption is generally the way to wealth in a stagnant economy like Manipur, especially for government officials, these men were sobered by age. Although their contribution as leaders is hardly anything to talk about, as retired administrators, they at least were blessed with the grace of maturity. However, in the last one or two decades, things have changed dramatically and a new breed of political leaders have emerged. These are former government contractors in their 30s and 40s, who are stinking rich through organised plunder of public money in partnership with bureaucrats and politicians. Under the skin of a political leader, they essentially remain contractors at heart and continue their plundering ways. While as contractors, they were only given to brazen display of wealth, as politicians they also want to flaunt power in equally brazen fashions. What has evidently been allowed to wither is the civilisational pressure the `Superego` exerts on the infantile, instinctual `Id`. The `Ego` too has been overwhelmed by the primitive appetites of the `Id`. Greed, lust, need for dominance, are now the order of the day, resulting in a disorder psychologist Thomas A. Harris called `I`™m okay you are not okay,` in his seminal book I`™m Okay, You`™re Okay. This is the character of our new political leadership by and large. Fifteen years ago, when the late Chief Minister, Oja Wanghengbam Nipamacha bought a Mitsubishi sedan for his personal use, there were eyebrows raised that he could fiddle while Manipur burned. Today even the children of our new political leadership would not want these automobiles as toys.

KOHIMA, May 12 (NEPS): The Opposition Congress has once again stated that it would not be able to go together with the NPF-led DAN Government in Nagaland as the BJP was part of the government and further disclosed that they had already served “show cause notice” to their MLAs on May 9 to reply within seven days after their joining the TR Zeliang government on May 8.

The “show cause notice” served to the eight Congress MLAs issued on May 9 by V Narayanasamy, In-charge of AICC North Eastern States, said, “You are called upon to explain within seven days, why action should not be initiated against you for violating the Party directions and joined the NPF Government headed by Shri TR Zeliang along with BJP MLA in the ministry. You are suspended from the Congress Party forthwith.”

Talking to media persons here at the Congress Bhavan Tuesady, newly appointed NPCC president Kewekhape Therie said the BJP’s religious intolerance was prevalent in every nook and corner of the country. And therefore, they could never go together with this “communal political party.” “The stand of the Congress is we are unable to compromise our ideology with the communal political party,” he said alleging BJP’s “ideology” was against their “social structure and way of Naga life.”

Giving a strong message to the BJP-led NDA government and their alliance government in Nagaland, the former finance minister in the first DAN government asserted that they did not “approve” the religious intolerance happening in the country after the coming of the BJP to power at the Center.

Expressing hope that their party MLAs would realize danger of going together with the “communal political party,” the NPCC chief believed that good sense would prevail upon their legislators and they would be able to “amicably settle.”

“They are our Congress members (Congress MLAs) and they are still and they will continue to be our members,” Therie pointed out. He, however, made it clear that the party (Congress) would not be able to “compromise our political ideology” with the “communal political party” whose ideology was against secular fabric of the country.

“I wonder why the NPF has no hesitation in going together with the BJP despite several explanations cited elsewhere in the nation if they are Nagas and the Christian,” the NPCC chief questioned. “They (NPF) should feel that it is not appropriate on their part to govern with this communal political party.”

On Zeliang as Chief Minister, the NPCC chief doubted that he (Zeliang) would be able to deliver to the people because of the complex “elements” that were surrounding him. “Otherwise, he (Zeliang) is a good man,” he said.
