IMPHAL, June 13: United Naga Council (UNC) has announced today to impose 48 hours bandh of vehicular traffic along the national highways in Manipur hills from midnight of June 16 as expression of resentment for non-fulfilling with tangible solution pertaining to the Alternative Arrangement.
However, educational Institutions, medical, water supply, electricity and media are exempted from the purview of the bandh.
In a statement, the UNC reiterated that the Naga people of Manipur had convened the 3rd Naga Peoples`™ Convention (NPC) on July 1, 2010 declaring severance of political ties with the `communal Government of Manipur`™ and to demand Alternative Arrangement outside the Government of Manipur pending the Indo-Naga political settlement.
The demand was registered with the intervention of the then Prime Minister of India thus, the 1st Round of Tripartite Talks was held on September 21, 2010 in New Delhi, it said.
The statement continued that the last 7th Round of Tripartite Talks on Alternative Arrangement for the Nagas of Manipur was held on February 6, 2014 at Tahamzam, Senapati.
The political talk agreed to constitute a High Level Committee to translate the demand into political reality, it continued.
As the land, history, time honored institution, culture and tradition and identity of the Nagas could not be defended and protected under the incumbent oppressive political system of the communal Government of Manipur, the attention of the Government of India was drawn for its intervention with an Alternative Arrangement outside the Government of Manipur pending Indo-Naga political settlement, it said.
Appealing the tribe presidents, Naga frontal organizations, regional apex organizations to implement the bandh effectively in their respective jurisdiction, the UNC in its statement cautioned that anybody violating the bandh should be at his own risk.
