Tousem Area Student’s Union (TASO) demanded authorities concerned to revitalise the sub-divisional office and other relevant departments at Tousem sub-division headquarter, Tamenglong district.

The students’ body demanded for full functioning of SDO office with adequate staffs. President of TASO, Nehemiah Daime said that the infrastructure is ready but the staffs are not stationed at the office. The union also demanded for restoration of health care centres with ample team at Tousem PHC.

Installing one battalion of Manipur Rifle in the sub-divisional headquarter is also one of their demands. He explained that there is a need to install a state’s armed personnel in the area for the better functioning. There was a battalion 10-20 years back but has disappeared from the headquarters for some reasons, he quoted.

Nehemiah stated that road construction is a compulsory demand as the area has been deprived of so many facilities be it government schemes and other schemes. He emphasised that the Tamenglong to Tousem via Azuram road is nearer from the district headquarter than the existing route of Tamenglong to Tousem via Jiribam.

The lifeline bridge in Tamenglong – Tousem road was recently destroyed during the rainy season and people have been travelling by foot to get even basic amenities, he added.

Talking to IFP, Nehemiah said that a memorandum was earlier submitted to the chief minister on July 10 setting a dateline of August 15 to look into the matter of underdevelopment of the area. But the authorities concerned did not take up their matter very seriously, he lamented.

“We may be branded as the most backward area of the state and even in the country. We are not proud to be that and we want our government, whatever party they belong to, to do their homework and then talk about their achievements,” he added.

The demands were submitted to the chief minister today after the students ’ unions consultative meet yesterday with the Village Authority Chairman Council (VACC) of Tousem area.
