London, Aug 5 : Five time World Champion began her Olympic campaign with a convincing victory over Karolina Michalczuk of Poland. The first round was evenly matched with both pugilists moving forward and attacking their opponents. The five-time World Champion beat Polish Karolina Michalczuk 19-14 at the ExCel London. If she wins the next bout India will be assured of another bronze medal at least.
Women’s boxing is making its debut at the Olympics.Mary Kom’s key to her success was her straight punches which landed on the face of her opponent in all the four rounds.
The first and the fourth rounds were packed with attacks and flashes of punches. The first round was 3 3.
In round Karolina Michalczuk tried to be aggressive but Mary Kom landed her punches well. Karolina spent lots of energy to attack Mary and the five time world champion fell. Mary scored 5 while the Polish scored 4 having a one point advantage.
In the third round Mary Kom was pushed into the corner by Karolina Michalczuk. Mary Kom showing good technique scored good points while Karolina Michalczuk was throwing punches wildly. In the third round Mary Kom managed to keep distance from the Polish. Mary scored seven while Karolina scored 3.
In the fourth Round 4 Mary Kom starts off with good hits. Polish boxer looks tired, but Karolina hit a straight one but Mary Kom counters with a vicious left jab. Both looked tired and the score in this round was even 4 4.
Mary Kom won the match 19-14 and entered the quarter finals.
May Kom used all her experience to trouble her opponent who was trying to be over aggressive.
