Imphal, Dec 1 : 27 Assam Rifles of 28 Sector organised a seminar cum presentation on the theme ‘AIDS : Global Pandemic and its Impact on the Local Communities.’ on the occasion of World AIDS day at KHA Manipur college, Kakching.on 01 Dec 12.World AIDS Day was first conceived in August 1987 at the World Health Organisation in Geneva, Switzerland. Started on 1st December 1988, World AIDS Day is about increasing awareness, fighting prejudice and improving education about AIDS. Exhorting the local communities, the speakers informed that the theme for World AIDS Day 2012 is ‘Getting to Zero’. After 30 years of the global fight against HIV/AIDS, this year we are committed to focusing on achieving 3 targets: “Zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS related deaths”. However, in order to meet the challenge of ‘Getting to Zero’ all the communities must work together to achieve universal access to HIV prevention, treatment and care. The event also included free testing for HIV for the volunteers, demonstration and awareness capsule and concluded with a pledge taken by all present that World AIDS Day provides an opportunity for all of us – individuals and communities to take on the challenge of getting to zero.
In another occasion, 35 Assam Rifles of 28 Sector organized an awareness campaign against HIV/AIDS on the occasion of “World AIDS Day” at Sajik Tampak on 01 Dec 2012. People from Sajik Tampak, Haika, Paldai, Khullen, Geljang and Gelngai villages attended the event. Medical team conducted lectures on safe sex, appropriate use of contraceptives, safe use of needles and syringes, transfusion of clinically tested blood and sensitization of women about regular medical check-up of both the expecting mother as well as her baby. A film on AIDS was also screened to ensure proper understanding of the disease and its impact on society.
Similarly,44 Assam Rifles of 10 Sector under HQ IGAR (South) in collaboration with Compassion School, Kamjong observed World AIDS Day at Chassad-Kamjong villages of Ukhrul District on 01 Dec 2012.The event was graced by Commandant 44 Assam Rifles as Chief guest. The aim of this event was to spread awareness about this very dreadful and deadly disease. The
Commandant,44 AR gave very valuable and quintessential advice about how one prevents oneself from this disease. He emphasised that this disease has no cure as of now, thus prevention is of paramount importance. He also stressed that people must empathize with those suffering from this disease. The event enlightened people about AIDS and they were made to realise about the various modes of transmission of AIDS.
