SHILLONG, Jan 18 NNN: Meghalaya Chief Secretary, WMS Pariat on Friday informed that to ensure free and fair polling for the upcoming state assembly elections slated for February 23, especially in the Garo Hills region the state government has urged the Central government to deploy 73 companies of para military forces in the trouble prone areas.
“The step was taken keeping in mind the current situation prevailing in the entire Garo Hills region and we have requested the central government to deploy 73 companies of the para military forces,” Pariat said.
He also informed that the first lot of the central para-military force will be arriving in the state on February 8 and they would be immediately positioned in different parts of Garo hills.
However, there are no other problems, faced by the government so far.
However, when asked about the peace talks with the fraction Garo Hills banned militant outfit, ANVC (B), the CS replied that the talks are in process.
“It’s just being delayed because of the upcoming general elections and the implementation of the model code of conduct,” the CS said. He said that whatever terms and conditions were imposed with the mother outfit Achik National Volunteers Council (ANVC), the same would be applied with ANVC (B).
“We hope that soon after the elections, talks with the outfit will be made,” Pariat said.
