IMPHAL, May 3: Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – North-East Institute of Science and Technology (CSIR-NEIST), Branch Laboratory, Lamphelpat, Imphal has organized a two day Department of Biotechnology and Natural resources Awareness (DNA) clubs educational program from May 2 to 3, 2013 at its premises.
On the concluding day of the program, Dr Manju Sundriyal, Scientist-in-charge Uttrakhand Science and Education Research Centre, Dehradun delivered a lecture on “Wild edible plants and its sustainable development”, and Dr RC Sundriyal, Scientist F at GB Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development, Almora delivered a lecture on “Himalayan Biodiversity”.
Prizes were distributed to students for essay and extempore speech competitions held today. Students and teachers of 18 government schools of the state including high schools and junior high schools attended the said program and educational CDs were distributed to them.
Speaking at the sideline of the occasion, Dr H Birkumar Singh, Principal Scientist CSIR-NEIST Branch Laboratory, Lamphelpat, Imphal said there are 57 DNA clubs’ schools in the state. Programs have been conducted in an aim to spread awareness on the means to preserve bio-resources in the environment.
Laboratory equipments have been given to the schools so that many experiments can be conducted to conserve bio-resources. Spot painting, essay, extempore, model making competitions and field visits for students are also being conducted to imbibe knowledge of bio-resources to them, he added and said it would be more effective if students participate in the programs.
He went on to say that the designation and privilege that Manipur is a hotspot of biodiversity lies in the hand of the people and especially, the students.
