Imphal, June 26 MNS/NNN: As observed at other parts of the world, the international day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking 2013 was observed in Manipur. The All Manipur Anti Drug Association, AMADA observed the day today at Manipur Press Club Majorkhul. The theme of the year is make health your new high in life not drugs.
The eight annual excellent awear the marvel 2013 was given to Kangjam Ranjit imspector Manipur Police dept govt. of Manipur for his outstanding duty in connection with drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
O. Joy addressing the occasion said that our society is facing three major issues namely drug, corruption and law and order. Drug abuse is a burning issue in Manipur. Even the police officer, politician and army involved in the drug trafficking. Many youths are drug addict.
The 9th International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed in Imphal under the auspices of All Manipur Anti-Drug Association (AMADA).
Participating in the observance function held at the Press Club here, ex-minister and Manipur Peopleà,Party (MPP) advisor O Joy stressed on giving more impetus in tackling drug menace, corruption confronting Manipur and in improving law and order as well.
He said, increasing number of roads, buildings and other infrastructure developments that we see today in the state are all useless until and unless we try to deal with the present drug menace, corruption and law and order situation prevailing here.
Joy said real action is needed rather than uttering words to address such problems and lauded some of the personnel of Manipur Police who have done well in the efforts to tackle the problem of drug trafficking that everyone has witnessed now.
Besides Joy, M Padamini Devi, president, AMADA, RK Ibungosana, Superintendent of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), regional unit Imphal and Dr K Komolini Devi, Deputy Director (PH), Medical Directorate, Lamphelpat were also present at the function.
At the occasion, Sub-Inspector K Ranjit, former officer-in-charge, Special Intelligence Unit (SIU) of Manipur Police which was abolished by Manipur Government recently, was conferred with the AMADA’s Athouba) Award, 2013.
The day was also observed at Noney bazaar in Tamenglong district under the aegis of District Social Welfare Department, Tamenglong by joining hands with different NGOs. There, a public rally was also organised as part of the observation.
Chandel district also joined the other parts of the state in observing the day as the district Social Welfare Department organised a function to mark the day.
In 1987, United Nations (UN) declared 26 June as International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Ever since, this day is observed to create awareness about drug abuse and its harmful effects on health. Seizing the opportunity, 9 Sector AR under HQ IGAR (S)organised a plethora of events to campaign against the same in which all units under the Sector participated actively. 40 AR organised an awareness programme at Darul-Uloom (Markaz) at village Haureibi, Thoubal Dist. 30 AR organised a stage show on drug abuse for the locals of village Khonghampat, Imphal West Dist. A number of representatives from various organisations including Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and All Manipur Anti Drug Association were also present. 15 AR organised counselling and lectures by Unit Medical Officers in Phundrei Junior Higher Secondary School, Chaoyaima Higher Secondary School Thoubal and Memorial English Academy School of Yairipok. Pamphlets on ‘Drugs Drag You Down’ were distributed amongst the participants. 18 SIKH joined hands with the Anjuman Islam-E-Musharaah (AIM) and organised an anti drugs rally at Lilong Haorebi for eradicating illegal drug business.
