Zeliangrong community observes Haipou’s 86th martyr’s day

The ideology of oneness proposed by Jadonang is still relevant today and should be endorsed by all, said Gaidon Kamei, UNC president at the observance of 86th martyr’s day of Jadonang at Koirengei Zeliangrong village.

The programme was organised jointly by Zeliangrong Baudi and Zeliangrong Youth Front, Manipur.

Today marks the day of hanging of Jadonang by the Britishers in 1931 at the age of 26 in Nambul river, present day Imphal Jail for waging war against the British empire.

Gaidon added that he was a man of intellect even if he was not an educated man. He saw the future when no one had and laid a foundation of Naga Raj movement and fought for it.

Soso Lorho, convener of Naga Political Leaders’ Forum (NPLF), chief guest of the function emphasised that this day is a platform to discuss his ideology and achievements and also to be more practical and bring back to life the ideology he propagated 86 years ago.

Jadonang worked hard not for his interests but for the Naga people as a whole, he reiterated.

One minute silence was observed to pay tribute to the freedom fighter. Professor of history, Lanbilung Gonmei, Imphal village talked on “Haipou Jadonang as freedom fighter; India or Naga freedom fighter”.

The programme was attended by D. Athuibou former MLA and Ashinpou Gangmei, chairman of Committee for Alternative Arrangement, UNC as guest of honour and president respectively. Many other social and political leaders also attended the programme.

This special day was also observed in his birth place, Kambiron, organised by Haipou Jadonang Memorial Trust at Haipou Jadonang community hall, Puiluan (Kambiron) village.

Nungba SDO, Ganguiliu Gangmei, former ADC member Aphang Gonmei and village chairman Kakaodai Gangmei attended the function as chief guest, guest of honour and president respectively.

Solomon Kamei, read out the detailed history of Jadonang from his early childhood days to the day he was martyred.

“The freedom fighter’s ideology and teachings should be preserved and promoted by us, the villagers and his integrity should be preserved as the true local men of a great leader like Jadonang”, said the chairman of the village.

A memorandum was submitted a few months back to CM Biren and he had given positive response but work has not started yet to beautify the village, said the chairman.

The day was widely celebrated today even at Silchar, Assam organised by Zeliangrong Students Union Silchar under the theme “Heralding the heroic sacrifice for unity”.

ZUF echoes Jadonang’s dream to unite his people

The Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) today observed the 86th Martyrdom of Haipou Jadonang today at its general head quarter, in Tamenglong district.

A statement issued by James Kamei, the “home secretary” of the outfit, said the observance was attended by Jenchui Kamei, ZUF chairman and Nickson Thoitak (Arei) chief of army Zeliangrong Tiger Force (ZTF) as the chief guest and guest of hounour respectively.

The programme began with three minute silence prayer paying homage to the legend for his supreme sacrifices for the freedom of the Zeliangrong people and its kindred tribe in particular  and Nagas in general from the British empire, it said.

Today, Jadonang is remembered for his courage, and vigor that fought against the British colonial forces, cultural imperialism and his campaign to protect and preserve traditional or indigenous culture of his people, it continued.

The statement further said ZUF chairman in his chief guest speech, recollected that Jadonang was not only a freedom fighter but also a spiritual guide, prophet, healer and preacher.

Despite of so many attempts to take his life by the British forces, he was not disheartened with all the threat but continued to work for the cause of his people and strive to bring peace, understanding and bridging the gap between different communities in the state, it said.

It said Jenchui further pointed out that Jadonang dedicated his life for the progress and upliftment of his people and it was his dream to unite his people and strive for progress and live fearlessly. Though his dream was not interpreted into reality during his lifetime yet he left his footprints to follow by his fellow citizen.

“As we remembered our true hero and recollect his heroic deeds, chairman appeals to Zeliangrong people to reaffirm ourselves to pass on this rich heritage to the younger generation to continuing striving for excellence and unity of Zeliangrong people living across the globe to interpret his dream into reality” it quoted.

The ZUF also extended its heartfelt gratitude and sincere appreciation to all the Zeliangrong frontal organizations, schools/institutes, villages for observing this very occasion to our true patriotic hero and social reformer.

It further appealed to all the Zeliangrong citizens to extend its support to the outfit in days to come.

The statistics of road fatality in the state in 2017 (January-June) increased by 61.7 percent as compare to 2016 (January-June), said transport, joint director, B.K. Sharma.

He was speaking as chief guest during a “One-day road safety awareness programme for students” today at Ram Lal Paul Higher Secondary School. It was organised by Institute of Driver Training and Research Centre under the ministry of road transport and highways.

Sharma said that in order to prevent road accidents it is necessary to know the road safety measures and such awareness programme will be helpful in checking road accidents.

Earlier such awareness programme was conducted at Leimakhong army camp as many central forces are found breaking the traffic rules in the city, he added.

Sharma announced that from September 1 a fine of Rs. 700 will be imposed if anyone is found breaking the traffic rules and if the same person is found repeating the same offence, the person’s driving license will be suspended for three months.

The chief guest said if everyone follows the proper rules and regulations of driving given by the government, then the cases of road accident will be very rare.

He appealed to all the stakeholders of the state to help in spreading awareness of road safety measures in order to make an accident free state.

IGP called meeting of ‘concerned’ policemen to discuss EEVFAM case

The Manipur police department allegedly collected funds from majority of its junior and senior ranks to fight the impending case of fake encounters. The funds collected are meant to engage expert criminal lawyers to defend the police personnel who can be implicated in the ongoing CBI inquiry directed by the Supreme Court.

 According to confirmed sources, the directive given to collect funds was given from senior level officers and every police station collected the ‘taxes’. A constable has to fork out Rs. 500 and upto Rs 1000/2000 from the assistant sub-inspector level to the sub-inspector level. The figure escalates as the ranking of the police official rises. The source mentioned that the collected money is taken charge by a senior ranking police official.

The collection came in the light of the Supreme Court judgement on July 14 last directing an inquiry into 85 cases of fake encounters perpetrated in the state, which involved the armed forces and state police.

The CBI has already started processing the paper works, the final conclusion of its investigation report is due to be submitted by December 31 this year. The special investigation team is also authorised to charge-sheet any personnel if deemed necessary.

Before the collection started, an urgent meeting was convened at the conference hall of the SP Imphal West in the morning of August 10. The meeting was called by an IGP rank police officer and the discussion was about the Supreme Court case filed by Extrajudicial Execution Victim Families Association Manipur and Human Rights Alert.

The IGP had directed authorities concerned of Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Kakching, Tamenglong, NAB, 1 MR, 2 MR, 8 IRB to instruct the personnel to be present at the meeting.

The senior police officer asked 31 personnel of Imphal West to be present. They include subedar I. Khaba Singh, SI RK Binojit Singh, SI P. Tarunkumar, SI N. Jateshore, SI L. Lenin, SI RK Brojen, SI Kh. Inaobi, jemandar L. Bebekananda, ASI Kh. Somendro, ASI L. Sarat Singh, ASI S. Kirankumar, head constable (HC) Md Aktar Hussain, HC Md Ajit Singh, HC L. Naba Singh, self-confessed assailant of Th. Sanjit in the BT fake encounter case head constable Thounaojam Herojit Singh, HC L. Chingkheihunba Meitei, HC Yengkhom Keshorjit Singh, HC Victor Chabungbam, HC Elangbam Abung Singh, HC James Palmei, HC Kh. Sushilkumar Singh, HC Paominlun Singson, HC I. Dinachandra Singh, havildar L. Premkumar Singh, havildar L. Romesh Singh, HC Akhub Luther, HC Md Ibomcha, HC L. Lenin Singh, HC S. Premjit Singh, HC Y. Ibocha Singh and HC S. Thouba Meitei.

Another 10 personnel of Imphal East were also informed to attend the meeting. They are, Inspector P. John Singh, Inspector H. Surkumar Singh, SI Md Rajib Khan, jemandar A. Sunder Singh, SI M. Anandkumar Singh, havildar Priyokumar Singh, HC Th. Brojen Singh, HC Th. Amarjit Singh, HC Abdul Khalil and HC B Usharanjan.

Similarly, for Thoubal district police, Inspector N. Sadananda Singh, SI Md Saukat Ali, HC Kh. Rakib and haviladar Bronson Thanga were notified to attend the meeting.

Bishnupur police was notified for Inspector T. Khogen, Kakching police for HC H. Sakthi, Tamenglong police for SI Kh. Sunilkumar Singh, Narcotics and Affairs of Border for SI Kh. Utamkumar Singh and SI M. Goverdhon.

The 1 MR for havildar Kamei James, 8 MR for Hollal Haokip, CO 8 IRB assistant commandant Th. Krishnatombi Singh and subedar Md Soukat Ali of Home Guard.

It is learnt that the Manipur police department is taking the CBI investigation with all seriousness and preparing for any legal entanglements. Which police personnel will be implicated in the CBI investigation will be unfolded after the report is submitted on December 31. The Supreme Court is monitoring the developments as per its judgement passed.

In the next few decades, indigenous people of Northeastern states will be replaced by Bangladeshi Muslims, warned cultural activist, Ningthouja Lancha while addressing 36th foundation day of Union of Social Upliftment today at Sangeet Kala Sangam, Khurai Lamlong Keithel.

The foundation day is organised by foundation day celebration committee, 2017 and will be celebrated for a month beginning today.

In the keynote address general secretary of the club Khumukcham Ronex Khaba said Union of Social Upliftment is an apex body form by 25 clubs of Imphal East district. It was established in August 28, 1986 in order to bring a united body of various ethnic groups for the welfare of the society as well as the state.

He listed various achievements of the club last year.

A one minute silence was observed in the memory of former members of the club.

Assembly Speaker, Yumnam Khemchand said people are facing lots of problems. The issues are to be solved by the representatives of state. He appealed to the people to elect right representatives.

To bring a good and welfare society people need to be united. Problems in the state are not caused by public but by administrators, he charged.

Lancha who was the guest of honour said many non-locals are entering the Northeast especially from Bangladesh at the rate of 3 lakhs per year. Like Tripuris are becoming endangered the Assamese population is now only 20 percent.

With global warming becoming a serious problem half of Bangladesh may be underwater. If this happens there is a possibility of Bangladeshi Muslims shifting to forests areas of the reason, Lancha said.

He said if the government fails to stop the intruders then the non-locals should be distributed all over the nation equally.

He suggested digital mode of thinking, which is the advanced thinking that supports each other’s thoughts and shares ideas. If people starts digital mode of thinking by being united the indigenous people can be saved, Lancha added.

President of the union, Thoudam Ruhinikumar, Sekmai MLA, Heikham Dingo Singh, councillor, IMC ward number 23, Loushanmbam Romola Devi and social scientist, Dhanabir Laishram also attended the function.

All Tribal Student Union, Manipur (ATSUM) served 48 hours ultimatum to the Manipur University authority demanding to follow the High Court directives and the Central Educational Institution Reservation Act, 2012 in the admission process.

Speaking to media persons at ATSUM office located at Adimjati complex today, ATSUM general secretary Seiboi Haokip demanded that the admission process should be put in abeyance until such time and the results declared for the academic season 2017-2018 are rectified to the guidelines and reservation norms of the government.

“Peeved at the brazen defiance of the Manipur University authority for its failure to comply to the directives of the High Court of Manipur and the Central Educational Institution Reservation Act, 2012, with regard to the admission process”, ATSUM warned the authority to change within 48 hours failure which the students union will intensify agitations.

Articulating its strong opposition to the perpetual defiance on the part of the MU authority since the up-gradation of Manipur University to the central university, Seiboi said ATSUM and University Authority has signed MoU on November 7, 2016 where both party agreed to adhere central education institution (reservation in admission) act which stipulates 31 percent reservation for the Schedule Tribe which subsequently culminated ATSUM’s month long agitation.

But the recent announced admission lists in the various departmental entrance test results explicitly indicates that most of the departments except Economics and English departments has overtly defied the central act as well as failed to honour the spirit of MoU signed between ATSUM and MU authority, Seiboi said.

Further, the Manipur University authority shall solely be held culpable for all loss of academic days in the event of an agitation unleashed by ATSUM, he added.

MUTSU closed down MU A-block

Meanwhile, irate tribal students of Manipur University locked down Manipur University administrative block in the afternoon demanding to put admission process in abeyance till their demands is made.

Later, police intervene and brought the situation under control.

On the other hand, Manipur University Tribal Students Union (MUTSU) demanded the MU authority to declare null and void of all the recently held admission test results alleging that the results is defied the High Court order of August 21, 2017.

In a statement, MUTSU general secretary T. Kailen Haokip alleged that MU have been deliberately discriminating and depriving the tribal students’ rights in the admission reservation since the inception of MU into central university since 2005.

Kailen Haokip demanded that the tribal students should get 31 percent reservation in admission out of the total intake, but MU authority had once again manipulated the quantum of reservation by giving only 20/21/22 percent out of the total intake.

MUTSU appealed to the higher authorities and MU authority to deliver justice to the tribal at the earliest.

Further, MUTSU called tribal civil organisations, human rights, students’ bodies and others to support their demands to deliver justice.

A former branch manager of Manipur Rural Bank (MRB) Yairipok branch has lodged a complaint to chairman and managing director CDM UBI, Kolkata against the chairman of MRB alleging partiality and misuse of official powers and position.

The complainant L. Joychandra Singh, in his letter, drew the attention of the CDM to initiate appropriate action against the MRB chairman, Bimol.

According to Joychandra, he was put under suspension on December 9, 2010 for alleged misappropriation of over Rs. 46 lakhs. The decision to conduct a departmental enquiry against him was taken on September 8, 2011 and the enquiry started on February 2, 2012.

Although the enquiry lasted for several years the enquiry officer reportedly prepared a report without taking Joychandra’s statement and submitted the same to disciplinary authority on October 11, 2016.

Subsequently, on December 3, 2016 the final order was issued on the quantum of punishment to be given to Joychandra without giving any prior notice to him and made him to take force retirement.

Interestingly, it is learnt that the enquiry has failed to fix any financial liabilities on Joychandra despite having forcing to retire.

After Joychandra’s suspension, from Yairipok branch one Th. Gourabi Singh was posted as the manager in December 2010.

Gourabi being a local man allegedly disbursed huge amount of loan and advances to his relatives without proper investigation and verification thereby creating huge amount of NPA (non-performing assets).

Then in 2013 he fraudulently issued D-call receipts to K. Meghachandra Singh local MLA amounting to several lakhs. This came to the knowledge of the head office. But no action was taken against him and promptly transfered to Kumbi branch. There were also many scandals surfaced and no action was taken against him showing flexibility and tolerance.

It is learnt that he has given a sum of Rs. one lakh to the then chairman for cover-up which is a case of misuse of official power and position as disciplinary authority.

The branch Manager MRB, Bimol was also caught by vigilance department for fraudulently issuing bank guarantee bonds amounting approximately Rs. 6.47 crores to one of the special contractors.

Despite his denial Bimol was suspended on September 3, 2016 by the head office.

Subsequently, an order issued designating senior manager (Adv. And Rec.) A. Brajeshwar Sharma to investigate the matter, who found the allegations correct and submitted the report to the head office.

To everyone’s anticipation for stern action, Bimol’s suspension order was revoked on August 18 last without any action.

 “I have been punished for what somebody has done and blame it to me resulting out of partial and biased enquiry violating the principles of natural justice and fair play”, lamented the former manager.

Moreover, he revealed that a case is also pending with the High Court for deprivation of full benefit of retirement policy.

“I accepted the forced retirement not in the sense that I am guilty but I am fed up to work under such kind of governance and it would be suffocating for seniors like me to continue further”, he added.

Noting the alleged partiality and irregularities, violating the principle he appealed the higher authority to take appropriate action failing which he threatens to complaint the matter to department of financial and CBI anti-corruption cell.

The Delhi School of Economics (DSE), Delhi University is going to organise a memorial lecture on Haipou Jadonang on August 29, on the 86th anniversary of his martyrdom in association with Rongmei Phwam Delhi (RPD) at the DSE Vivekananda hall.

The Department of Sociology, DSE has instituted North East India Studies Program (NEISP) in 2015 with Dr. Kamei Aphun as the convener to address important issues and critical events of the Northeast region.

A statement issued by the organising committee said Dr. Aphun (who is also a recipient of many international awards) stated that this time, DSE will collaborate with Rongmei Phwam Delhi (RPD) to pay the most befitting tribute to Haipou Jadonang and to bring the martyr at the global academic platform which will be a historic one.

Machunlung Kamei, chairman of RPD who is also a senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) presently holding additional commissioner of vigilance, customs and central GST, GOI, stated that such memorial lecture is crucial for the present generation to know the importance of culture and tradition which Haipou Jadonang had strongly defended from British colonialism and cultural erosion.

In the same light, Gaichanglungliu Kamei, advisor of RPD (an Alumni of London School of Economics, UK and who is now senior additional commissioner of Income Tax, have argued for not forgetting one’s roots and culture. She has earlier worked on the Zeliangrong movement during her days in JNU, it further said.

It further informed that Prof. Pami Dua (Director, DSE), Prof. Roma Chatterji (HOD, Sociology, DSE) and Prof. Hira Paul Gangnegi (Former HOD, Dept. of Buddhist Studies) will also be speaking on the historic occasion. The memorial lecture of the day will be delivered by Dr. Kamei Aphun who is also one of the advisors to RPD.

The participants will include eminent scholars and distinguished invitees from JNU, Jamia Millia Islamia, Ambedkar University, Amity University etc. besides many renowned Professors and academic deans from Delhi University.

It asserted that Jadonang or Haipou Jadonang (1905-1931) as his adoring people would like to address him with ‘honour’ and ‘reverence’, is one of the most enigmatic personalities in the culturally mosaic Northeast India. Due to undocumented and scanty literature, little has been known about him especially by the outside world which makes him a mysterious person. The mystic aspect of his personality has further added to the confusion.

Born in a humble peasant family in 1905 at Puiluan (or Puilon) village in the present day Nungba Sub-division in Tamenglong district of Manipur, Jadonang was a Rongmei Naga belonging to a Malangmei clan. Right from his early years he was a keen observer who grows up to understand social, cultural and political nuances of the society. This made him understand the spirit of nationalism and political movement. To the contemporary world, Jadonang was an unknown Naga rebel whose revolt was nipped in the bud, whereas his own follower and successor Gaidinliu (on the contrary) had received wide attention and recognised as one important freedom fighter of India today. Infact, it was Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru who had popularized Gaidinliu throughout his writings and gave her the title ‘Rani’.

Indeed Haipou Jadonang was a mystic rebel who galvanised a movement against British imperialism and cultural invasion of the west and started a ‘Heraka religion’ to fight against cultural and religious encroachment.

Today, Haipou Jadonang is best remembered for his courage and vigour who fought against the British colonial forces, cultural imperialism, and for his campaign to protect and preserve traditional or indigenous culture of his people. The present generation identify him as a true patriot and a great social reformer who withstood against all odds, the press release stated.

Regarding the recent incident of not allowing a 78 year-old man to have Rante Blood Sugar (RBS) and Kidney Function Test (KFT) at Churachandpur District hospital,

The president of BJP, Churachandpur district, Lienkanglo and his colleagues met the medical superintendent (MS) of Churachandpur District hospital, Dr. J. Songoukham today and inquired about the Bio-chemistry technician who had deprived medical test to an old man.

In a press conference held at its office located at Teddim road, the president flanked by the BJP team said they also inquired about present situations in the hospital as there are other issues in providing necessary medicines, cotton bandage, food and others and also the absence of CT scan machine in the hospital.

The team further asked the MS on the reason behind insulting a media person who had gone to inquire about the medical test incident in the hospital. The MS of the hospital was also advised to make arrangements to replace the unprofessional technicians and doctors at the earliest.

The spokesperson of BJP, Churachandpur district, Khaisei Haokip said that the team will soon take up sensitisation programmes at different departments to make proper functioning of offices and also asked for media assistance to help in transformation the district.

The BJP president has assured that disciplinary action will be taken up against the technicians involved in the deprivation of medical tests of the old man. He added that the director of Health department has sent message to minister V. Hangkhanlian regarding the issue.

For the past three-four days, Ukhrul district has been reeling without electric power supply. Commercial shops, small industries and business establishments have been affected badly by the irregular supply of power.

Achui Keinam, who runs a pastry shop at Viewland Ukhrul lamented that her business is on halt as there is no supply of power. Many like her and others who run pastry shop and other industries are facing the same hardship.

Meantime the deputy manager, MSPDCL Ukhrul division while speaking to this reporter informed that failure of panel in the sub-station of 33/11KVA at Hundung cement factory is the main reason for the company’s failure to provide supply of electricity in the district.

The sub-station of 33/11 KVA at Hundung cement factory situated 10km away from Ukhrul town can only generate 2 x 3. 15 MVA power, which is lesser than the actual power needed by the district. The 30-year old sub-station is in constant breakdown due to worn out machine remarked deputy manager of MSPDCL Ukhrul division.

Moreover, due to the distance and location, the company faces problems to maintain and repair immediately. He opined that the immediate commission of sub-station at Tangrei, Ukhrul would solve the problems.

But due to non-commission of 33/11KVA sub-station with a capacity to generate 2×5 MVA power at Tangrei, the company is always at the receiving end of the consumers, added the deputy manager.

The sub-station at Tangrei, with a capacity to generate 2x5MVA has been tested long time back and can be operational for power supply to Ukhrul town but due to non-commission or inauguration by the authority concerned the Ukhrul populace is facing power problems every now and then.

Thanmi Kashung, chairman (acting) ADC Ukhrul has implored the authority concerned for immediate inauguration of the Tangrei sub-station in the interest of Ukhrul public.

The proscribed umbrella organisation of different outfits operating in the state, CorCom has clarified regarding the arrest of one Mairenbam Achou by a joint team of 6 AR under the command of major Ankur Rana.

A release signed by media coordinator of the group, Ksh. Yoiheiba said that the position ‘Finance and Foreign Secretary’ do not exists in CorCom, and the arrested person is not related with the organisation in any manner of form.

The information released through media yesterday about the arrest of Mairenbam Achou (78) alias Achouba, son of (L) M. Naha Meitei from Moirang Thana Leikai at Tronglaobi Area of Bishenpur district, is a hilarious story based on lies and deception, it said.

 Further the release said what sounds interesting is that this 78 year old man not only has been assigned to a post a Brigadier in the story, but it also claims that he holds talks with Thailand, Myanmaar and China, managing works for CorCom.

On the other hand, he is said to be a brigadier of KCP, it continued. Such self-contradictory statements prove that the released statements are made out of deception, it said, adding Marjor Rana of 6 AR may be able to trick his seniors and bosses with such lies but it would be impossible to deceive the people of Manipur (Kangliepak).

JIRIBAM | Aug 27

The All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), district committee, Jiribam today observed the 52nd Hunger Marches day popularly known as ‘Chaklam Khongchat’, remembering the August 27, 1965 mass movement and protest against artificial famine in the state.

The day’s observation began since early morning with hymns in the name of the four martyrs who lost their lives during the movement.

A rally was carried out holding the palanquin with photographs of Nilkamal, L. Chaobal, Oinam Naba Kumar and N. Promodini Devi who died in 1965 movement of Manipur. The rally moved though Jiribam bazaar and then proceeded toward NH-37 and from I. B. Leikai point the rally twisted and backed to the same Jiribam Higher Secondary school campus.

Later during the formal observation, a large number of people including students offered floral tributes to the portraits of the four martyred students.

As part of the observation, a programme was held at the auditorium of Jiribam Higher Secondary school.

Students reaffirm pledge to safeguard peoples’ rights

A mass rally was taken out today from Pishum Chingamacha till D.M. College campus as a part of observing the 52nd Hunger Marchers Day (Chaklam Khongchat Numit) organised by All Manipur Students Union.

Floral tributes were paid to the martyrs who had sacrificed their live fighting against the artificial famine created by the then government during August 1965 at Students martyrs’ complex, Pishum and the flag of the student body was hoisted.

Speaking at the main function at D.M. College multipurpose hall as chief guest, former AMSU president, Ningthoujam Brojendro said that the unfortunate incident had given birth to AMSU which is an independent student organisation and one of the oldest organisations in the Northeast.

The basic ideology of AMSU is to safeguard the rights of the people and to stand firm against any attempt to violate these rights.

“From the past the government had tried to keep the students body under its control. But the former dedicated leaders of AMSU have been fruitful in maintaining its autonomy. And AMSU as a student body will forever remain independent”, he said. 

The former president lamented that in recent times there has been sharp divide between the students’ organisations functioning in the state. “Diverse viewpoints and ideas on the basis of ideology is a different matter. But what is unfortunate is the divide growing out of petty politics”, he added.   

Brojendro said that development cannot be brought in a society does not know its history first so he asked the youths to master the knowledge of the history of the state.

Brojendro continued that knowing of the state’s history will also increase patriotism among the youths of the state. We must also keep in our minds that the merging of Manipur into the Indian Union was carried out under ‘forced agreement’, he maintained.

President of the function, AMSU president Manjit Sarangthem said that the state’s social and political condition is becoming worse day by day. Earlier Manipur did not depend on others state or country for food but presently most of the food products are imported from outside the states, he added.

Manjit continued that people getting panic for scarcity of food and fuel during highway blockades is an example of rising sense of dependency.  

During the British colonial period the people of hills and valley had a very cordial relationship. After merger to India it seems the relation is not as good like the past and it is happening due to some external force, he added.

The president said, “Our society should be built by ourselves and not by others” and he asked all the people of the state to be united to make a strong society.

 The function was attended by AMSU former president, A. Manisana and AMSU former general secretary, Chungsat Khongsai as guest of honour. It may be recalled that on this day four students namely, Nilkamal, L. Chaobal, Oinam Naba Kumar and N. Promodini Devi died in police action.

“Nagas have been suppressed and ill-treated for a long time by others. But these suppressions have made us stronger”, said UNC president, Gaidon Kamei speaking at the observation of the 69th Anniversary of Naga Martyrs’ Day at Mao Gate in Senapati district today.

 The UNC president urged the Nagas to remain united.

The programme was organised by Mao Council under the aegis of the (UNC) to honour Asiisii Hepuni of Punanamei, Mahriili Lohrii and Modo Kholi, both of Kalinamei who were shot dead on the spot and Daikho Hesho of Chowainamai Khullen and Obow Adani of Punanamei who were grieviously wounded and later succumbed to bullet injuries from the indiscriminate firings of the Assam Rifles and Manipur police force on August 27, 1948.

According to an earlier paper prepared by the UNC, the observation is in respectful memory and honour of those who suffered and made the ultimate sacrifice for the integration of all Nagas over sixty six years ago during the “No-Tax campaign”.

 Being a landmark in the history of political movement of the Nagas in Manipur in particular and all Nagas in general, the observation of “Martyrs’ Day” was taken up by the UNC with the Mao Council as the local organising committee since 27th August 2005, the UNC paper added.

 The UNC paper also stated that to the dismay of the Nagas, against their wishes to live together with their brethren of the Naga Hills of the then Assam, the government of India decided to grant a Legislative Assembly in Manipur. At this juncture, F. F. Pearson, President, Manipur State Darbar hurriedly constituted the Manipur State Constitution and the Manipur State Hill Peoples (Administration) Regulation Drafting Committee to work out an interim administrative arrangement for Manipur before the lapse of the British Paramountcy.

 “A. Daiho and Mr. Tiankham, representatives of hill tribes in the Committee pointed out that the draft constitution should incorporate the following clause – “the principle of equality and freedom as applied to all without distinction of caste, creed and race shall include the right of any section of hill people to secede at the end of five years period should the condition within the constitution not be satisfactory”, it read.

Both of them made it clear that if the clause was not incorporated they would not be party to the constitution. When the draft Constitution was submitted to the Maharaja of Manipur on May 15, 1947, F. F. Pearson, Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee, drew the particular and personal attention of the Maharaja to the dissension of the representatives of the hill tribes,” it added.

 In spite of the democratic demand for consolidation of contiguous Naga areas under one administrative unit and the explicit opposition to the Manipur State Draft Constitution by the tribe representatives, the General Election under the Manipur State Constitution Act 1947 was held in June 1948. The Nagas boycotted the election.

 It may be recalled the “No Tax Camoaign” was launched when Maharaj Kumar Priyobrata Singh was the chief minister of Manipur. The Nagas in Manipur refused to pay the annual House Tax to the Government of Manipur and under the aegis of the Naga National League (NNL) submitted their annual house tax to Charles Pawsey, D.C. of Naga Hills of Assam at Kohima, the UNC paper mentioned.

Meanwhile, several organisations including the All Naga Students’ Association Manipur (ANSAM), Naga People’s Organisation (NPO) and several other organisations attended today’s programme.

A tribute note from ANSAM said, “We also pay respect to and all the victims of brutalities of the day”. It further said that the Nagas’ movement is stronger because of their sacrifices. “We urge all to give their best efforts for Naga unity as unity is the only weapon for us to win peace,” the ANSAM message added.

Naga Women Union (NWU) in its message said, “It is a privilege for all of us to work in their footsteps on this day. We also remember their families. We thank you to share their life and you are in our prayers.”

The Manipur Commission for Protection for Child Rights (MCPCR) has today sent a reminder to the deputy general of Keystone Infra Private limited for opening an alternative to Tinseed roads Khurai failing which it warned of legal action.

A three member of the commission earlier visited two schools namely Mega Manipur School, Yaralpat Tinseed Road and Shihu Nistha Niketan, Moirangkampu Shajab, Imphal East, which have been badly affected by the flood and recurrent landslides on July 13 and as result both the schools have been closed down in several occasions.

Mega Manipur School was closed down for a long time since there were a series of landslides, which blocked and made vehicular movement impossible on the Yaralpat Tinseed road. The school is just adjacent to Chingkhei Ching, where the pipe laying works for water supply of Mapithel Dam is presently being carried out.

Similarly, Shishu Niketan School, which also uses the Tinseed faced a grim road communication problems, due to shrinking of a 100 metre long roads portion leading to the school. As the collapsed road was caved in 15 feet deep vehicular movements along the road became impossible which resulted in the closure of the school since July 10.

Subsequent upon the finding during its visit the commission submitted its recommendation to the chief secretary of Manipur including the Key Stone Company to immediately reopen an existing approach road called “Yaral Konjitl”, to be used as an alternative road, in order to evade possible land and mud slide accidents at Chingkei Ching road areas.

However, the commissioned pointed that the construction company has not been taken up any positive action.

It said the non-compliance made the condition of the road extremely unsafe for school going children and general public as there is high risk of health hazards and possible accidents.

It further pointed out that during dry season the road is often clouded with dust and muddy during rainy season.

The commission reminding the authority concerned to comply with its (MCPCR) recommendation to avoid any legal action in the interest of the school children and the public.

National Identity Protection Council (NIPCO) has paid homage to former chief minister of Manipur, Rishang Keishing and also shared the grief for the family members of the departed.

A release said the former chief minister had been one of the most respectable persons of Manipur who had a vision of a peaceful society. Rishang Keishing’s whispered words of ‘Ho Manipur’ during his final moments will remain forever in the hearts of the people of Manipur with a sense of patriotism, it added.

Meanwhile, United Peoples’ Front (UPF), Manipur has deeply condoled the sudden demise of former chief minister and parliamentarian, Rishang Keishing.

A release said that he was political leader who worked for the development of Manipur and its people. His demise is a great loss for the people of the state.

It further said that UPF shared the grief of the bereaved family members and relatives.

The winner of the beauty pageant Peden Ongmu Namgyal, (21) of Sikkim, 1st runner-up Loukrakpam Angobi Chanu, (18) of Manipur and 2nd runner-up Poonam Das, (18) of Assam sought the blessings of the CM in their future endeavours.

Extending his best wishes to the winners of the beauty pageant, N. Biren expressed that such platform not only showcases individual personality but also empower women to overcome stereotypes and break barriers. Such platform would also help them to become self-reliant to achieve greater heights, he added.

Mention may be made that Fiama Northeast Diva 2016-17 held its audition and selected girls from across the States of Northeast India. The grand finale of the event was held on 20 August, at Guwahati.

Joint Action Committee (JAC) SSB/BSF, Langol urged to the government to investigate into the matter of SSB/BSF constable GD appointment process taken up by one Ch. Manoranjan Khuman of Pishumthong Ningom Leirak.

Speaking to media persons today the JAC convenor, Ch. Birendra said that Manoranjan disguised himself as an advisor of Internal Security, Ministry of Home Affairs, Northeast region had conducted recruitment process from the year 2013 till 2016.

During the time he has collected money range from Rs. 1, 50,000 to Rs. 3, 00,000 from 723 candidates, he added.

However at the end of March 2016 he left his residence and fled to Delhi and has been absconding till today. But according to information from sources he is currently staying at Mizoram, continued the convenor.

The JAC appealed to the state government to take up action against Manoranjan.

For the first time Manipur film artists will present special live performance on September 9 at Iboyaima Shumang Lila Shanglen as a part of fund drive for Cine Actors’ Guild Manipur in connection with the celebration of its 12th foundation day.

Speaking to media persons, the guild’s president, T. Lokendro said that the actors’ body was formed for the welfare and development mostly for Manipur cinema, to make cultural ethos reflect in Manipuri film and to encourage members to participate in social activities.

As the guild has no source of income, fund drive has become one of the priorities for many activities of the guild, he added.
