Imphal, November 28 : Banian Repertory Theatre’s critically acclaimed Manipuri play- Kumudini is among 19 plays selected for the 29th Nandikar National Theatre Festival to be held from December 16 to 25 this year at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kolkata. During this 2012 edition, the Nandikar will pay tributes to Mohit Chattopadhyay and Sunil Gangopadhyay; and a seminar on Theatre and Integration will also be held.
The Nandikar will issue passes to be available from the Academy ticket counter between 1pm and 7pm from December 9. The available denominations are Rs. 40, Rs. 60 and Rs. 90.
The annual Nandikar National Theatre Festival is the biggest theatre carnival of Kolkata and one of the largest in the country as well. The festival provides a platform for the stalwarts and amateurs alike for not just participants from all over India, but also from the international arena.
Manipuri play- Kumudini directed by M. C. Thoiba and scripted by Dr. M.C.Arun introduces an individual Manipuri woman in the socio-political sphere as voluntary actor.
Maharani Kumudini is the wife of Maharaja Gambhir Singh, who liberated Manipur from Burmese occupation during the Chahi Taret Khuntakpa (The Seven Years Devastation). Maharaja Gambhir Singh died, when his eldest son Chandrakirti was only two. Kumudini found herself in the middle of palace intrigues and attempts by Gambhir
Singh’s brothers and relatives to wrest the throne. She ultimately succeeded in installing her son to the throne, but it was no mean feat for a woman.
Much has been discussed about Manipuri woman. Some have put them on a pedestal. Others say, women are exploited in our society. It is a confusing scenario. The play revolves round a contemporary radical who seeks answers on different facets of contemporary Manipuri woman and her position in the socio-political sphere, in the backdrop of the life and times of Maharani Kumudini.
The play explores the collective and individual womanhood, her desperation and dreams, woman’s space in kinship and political position, power and the patriarchal cultural order in Manipuri society.
Kumudini will be staged on December 23 at 6.30 pm. Kumudini produced in 2007 was recently performed at Hyderabad and Tirupati in the 7th Abhinaya National Theatre Festival 2012in the month of August. A theatre critic- Gudipoodi Srihari in the HINDU in its edition dated 23rd August 2012 wrote, “The four-day-long All India Theatre festival held by Abhinaya was an eye-opener revealing how other language plays are designed to win audience with commitment in choosing themes and coming out with forceful productions. Here was another excellent production by a Manipuri team of artistes, titled ‘Kumudini’, staged at Ravindra Bharati. It was the last play of the festival.
Despite the inability to understand their language, the audience was totally immersed, following thematic substance.
The subjects they choose were quite novel and experimental too. M.C. Thoiba who was actively involved in theatre movement handled this production with utmost care. Crowd scenes, rebellions were well handled”.
The plays selected for this year’s festival are Sukhmani Kohli’s Romeo Juliet and Seven Clowns, Saurabh Nayyar & Nitin Bhardwaj’s Ram Sajeevan Ki Prem Katha, Supriyo Chakraborty’s Hridmajhaare, Vinay Sharma’s Atmakatha, Choiti Ghosh’s A Bird’s Eye View, Suman Mukhopadhyay’s Shunyo Shudhu Shunyo Noy, Anurupa Roy’s Across
the Sea, Ranjit Kapoor’s Chekov Ki Duniya and Adamzaad and Panchlight, Nasir Uddin Yusuf’s The Tempest, Anup Hazarika’s Charandas Chor, Dr Tapanjyoti Das’s Tathagata, Subodh Pattanaik’s Biplabi Bihanga, M C Thoiba’s Kumudini, Baharul Islam’s The Green Serpent, Debabrata Maity’s Lakkoner Shoktishel, Swatilekha Sengupta’s Tushaarmalaar Deshe, Debsankar Halder’s Anto-Aadi-Anto and Swatilekha Sengupta’s Madhabi.Anup Hazarika’s Charandas Chor and Baharul Islam’s The Green Serpent are two Assamese plays from Assam to take part in the festival.

IMPHAL, Nov 26 MNS NNN : The normal ratio of girl child in Manipur has now dropped to a record low as the people are using Pre-natal Diagnostic Technique (PNDT) to abort girl child hence proper implementation of PC& PNDT Act is required in the state in order to stop such practice, Directorate of Family Welfare Services, Manipur, said Monday.
Naorem Achouba, Director, Directorate of Family Welfare Services, Manipur stated this during a 1-day capacity building workshop for media (both print and electronic) and the State Appropriate Authority (SAA) and PNDT Cell on “Conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Technique Act” organised by the Directorate at its Conference Hall, BT Road, Imphal.
“The decline in normal child sex ratio in Manipur is in a serious stage and proper implementation of PC&PNDT Act is the need of the hour to save the girl child,” Achouba said.
As per a directive issued by the Central Government in 2003, the practice of PNDT has been banned in Manipur, the Director informed. He, however, said that this ban has not been effective in the state till now.
The decrease in the number of girl child in the age group 0-6 in the state clearly indicates that such technique is still in practice in the state issued despite the ban and that abortions are being carried out after sex determination.
According to 1991 Census, the normal ratio of girl child was 974, while in 2001 the ratio was dropped at 952 and then in 2011 it has been again dropped at 934, Achouba said. The above figures show the number of girl child in descending order. The world normal child ratio is 950.
He further said the world normal child ratio is 950 and if this ratio is below the normal figure, the stage has to be taken as alarming. Therefore, PC&PNDT Act is necessary to strengthen in the state, he suggested.
Dr K Rajo, Additional Director, Family Welfare, Manipur and Dr Th Arunkumar, Nodal Officer, PNDT, Family
Welfare, Manipur were also present at the workshop.
It may be noted that the Supreme Court, taking a serious view of the onslaught of sex-selective discriminatory practices by the medical fraternity, and the connection it may have with the use of pre-natal sex determination, directed the Centre to implement the PC & PNDT Act in all its aspects. The order came following a public interest petition filed by the centre for the Enquiry of Health and Allied Themes (CEHAT), the Mahila Sarvangeen Utkarsh Mandal (MASUM) and Dr. Sabu George, who had done extensive research in this area.
Under the overall umbrella of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) is being proposed by the way of including as a part of RCH II Program. While RCH II is linked with the critical concerns of safe mother hood, child health and reproductive health issues, (SGC) integrates the Girl child survival before & after conception through implementation of Pre-conception and Pre natal diagnostic technique Act 1994 by regulating misuse of pre-conception and pre natal diagnostic techniques for sex selection and promotion of girl child in the country. SGC will be a decentralized centrally sponsored program. To ensure efficient implementation of PC&PNDT Act To reduce pre conception and prenatal mortality of girl child and hence improve sex ratio at birth All Pre-conception and Pre Natal Diagnostic Centers Implementing agencies Public Medical professionals
To ensure implementation of all promotional schemes for girl child at district level.Monitoring and evaluation of implementation of PNDT Act through community participations. Renewal of registrations to be taken on the basis of track record in terms of record keeping, etc of the PNDT Clinics

New Delhi, Nov 23 : Delegates of Joint Committee on ILP System in Manipur and Th Meinya MP met Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde. During the 45 minute long discussion Joint Committee informed about ILP, people’s movement etc.
A memorandum was also submitted to him. Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said the demand for ILP demand is genuine.
“The Union home minister said our movement was genuine but he asked us about the merit of the Inner Line Permit system. This shows that the government lacks interest and failed to understand our campaign here in Manipur even after a year long campaign,” said the Joint Committee members. “This means that we will have to continue our campaign for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit,” added the Joint Committee members.
Meanwhile, the memorandum said, “We the pleasure to invite your kind attention that the Indigenous people of Manipur are now highly alarmed with the threat of loss of identity, political rights, economical rights and their total marginalization.”

The alarming issue is aroused due to the perennial influx of outsider in Manipur. Excessive migrants from Myanmar, Bangladesh, Nepal and other parts of India are dominating over the indigenous peoples. Under the circumstances the people of Manipur are very much eager for implementation of Inner Line Permit to maintain its time immemorial rich identity, the memorandum added.
Without such regulation, influx of outsiders cannot be controlled. Therefore, on behalf of the people of Manipur, we humbly request you to honour and respect the Resolution of the Manipur State Legislative Assembly to implement Inner Line Permit in Manipur.
“We consider that it is the responsibility of Indian State to protect and save the identity, socio-economic and rights of the citizens, including the people of Manipur. We, therefore, request you to have a deep thought on our request and initiate necessary positive action from your end to meet the aspiration of the people of Manipur,” the Joint Committee memo also stated.
“We may take the opportunity to place you that Manipur was an Independent Kingdom with written historical chronicle dating from 33 A.D. The sovereignty of Manipur was lost into the hands of the British in 1891. Manipur regained independence in 1947, and established a democratically elected government under its own Constitution of Manipur few years before the Indian constitution was adopted,” it further said.
Manipur had its own policy of controlling and checking outsiders before the British invasion in 1891. It was continued as Permit system during British rule. The permit system for entering into Manipur was recognised by the Dominion Government of India before the controversial annexation took place in 1949. The permit system was continued till 17 November 1950, until it was arbitrarily abolished without the consent of the indigenous peoples during the Chief Commissioner’s rule in Manipur.
“Our demand for permit system in Manipur is framed within the existing constitutional framework. We held the Government of India as fully responsible to protect the interest of the people of Manipur .

MNS:- The Interceptor Missile AAD launched by the Scientists of DRDO from Wheeler’s Island, Odisha successfully destroyed the incoming Ballistic Missile at an altitude of 15 Kms. The interception took place at 12.52hrs. The target missile, a modified version of Prithvi, mimicking the enemy’s ballistic missile, was launched from Launch Complex III, Chandipur. Long Range Radar and MFC Radar located far away could detect the Missile from take-off and tracked it through its entire path. The total trajectory of the incoming Missile was continuously estimated by the guidance computer and subsequently the AAD Missile was launched at an appropriate time to counter and kill the ballistic missile.
The Ring Laser Gyro based Navigation System in Target, Fibre Optic Gyro based INS in Interceptor, Onboard computers, Guidance systems, Actuation Systems and the critical RF Seekers used for the terminal phase have performed excellently. The AAD Missile system initially guided by Inertial Navigation system was continuously getting update of the target position by the Radar through a data link. The Radio Frequency (RF) seeker tracked the Missile & Onboard computer guided the Missile towards the Target Missile and hit the target. The Radio Proximity Fuse (RPF) exploded the warhead thereby destroying the target missile completely.
In this mission, a special feature of intercepting multiple target with multiple interceptor was demonstrated successfully. An electronic target with a range of 1500 Kms was launched and the Radars picked up the target missile, tracked the target missile subsequently & launched an electronic interceptor missile. This electronic interceptor missile destroyed the electronic target missile at an altitude of 120 Kms. All the four missiles were tracked by the Radars and all the guidance and launch computers operated in full operational mode for handling multiple targets with multiple interceptor. All the four missiles were in the sky simultaneously and both the interceptions took place near simultaneously. This has proved the capability of DRDO to handle multiple targets with multiple interceptors simultaneously. The complete Radar Systems, Communication Networks, Launch Computers, Target update Systems and state of the art Avionics have been completely proven in this Mission.
Dr VK Saraswat, SA to RM congratulated all the DRDO Scientists for this successful demonstration of the Air Defence capabilities. Distinguished Scientists and Chief Controllers of DRDO, Shri AvinashChander, Shri S.S. Sundaram, Shri Sundaresh, Director ITR Shri MVKV Prasad, & other top Scientists of DRDO were present. The whole operations were carried out under the guidance of Shri Adalat Ali, Programme Director ‘AD’.

New Delhi , Nov 22: It is a great honour to Manipuri cinema and a big salute to filmmakers, technicians and artistes involved in Manipuri film industry that the critically acclaimed Manipuri feature film- Ishanou (1990), one of the masterpieces of Aribam Syam Sharma has been included among 27 Indian feature films to be screened at the Centenary Indian Cinema section of the 43rd International Film festival of India 2012 which is being held at Goa from November 20-30.
Ishanou (Chosen One) was the official selection of the Government of India for screening at Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes International Film Festival 1991 and was the first ever film from the North East India showcased at the prestigious Cannes Festival.
The 91- minute colour film tells an extraordinary story of a young wife (Anoubam Kiranmala) who suddenly begins to experience a series of fits and trances which the doctors cannot cure. A happy small family, somewhere in the Manipur valley, a husband (Kangabam Tomba) and wife and their little girl (Baby Molly) under the caring and protective authority of a market woman (Manbi) broke up when Tampha, the young wife was possessed by the divinity of the mysterious Maibi phenomenon and went through a series of violent feats of vision and trance till she ran away from home in frantic nocturnal quest of her Maibi Guru for initiation into the sect of the chosen.
Magic and mystery broke upon the mundane world of buying and selling and common rituals like that of a young girl’s ears being pierced and buying of a second hand scooter and a promotion in office bringing into play the world of the Maibis, with their exquisite ritual singing and dancing and worship and mythmaking.
But behind the colourful spectacle of traditional Lai Haraoba, into which Tampha almost lost herself in enraptured absorption, there lurked the pain of a mother who could no longer nurture a child who then grew into a stranger. The film closed on those images of estrangement that almost stifles the sheer grandeur and glory of the ritual festival.
Eminent littérateur M.K. Binodini scripted with screenplay the story. Girish Padhiar was the cameraman and Ujjwal Nandi was the editor.
The feature films selected for the package are Dhundiraj Govind Phalke’s silent film-Raja Harischandra (1913), Franz Osten’s Hindi Film-Achhut Kanya (1936), Vishnupam Govind Damle’s Hindi- Marathi film- Sant Tukaram (!936), Uday Shankar’s Hindi film- Kalpana (1948), S.S.Vasan’s Tamil film- Chandralekha(1948),Raj Kapoor’s Hindi film- Awaara (1951), Satyajit Ray’s Bengali film- Pather Panchali (1955), Guru Dutt’s Hindi Film- Pyaasa (1956), K.
