IMPHAL, July 5: Media persons are social engineers as teachers are human engineers. In the present social fabric, media can play a pivotal role in building a good society. Media has a magical influence in good governance, improving healthcare delivery system, streamlining public distribution system and empowering the masses in this knowledge-based society. A good nation without a good media system is a distant dream, said Dr. Aribam Ibomcha Sharma, News Editor and Regional News Unit Head, All India Radio, Imphal.

While delivering his speech as resource person on the topic ‘Role of Media in Nation Building and Career Avenues in Media’ during the Inspiration Episode-8 (IE-8) organized under the tutelage of Dynamic Manipur  on the theme ‘Media – Career  outlook and Society building‘ held at MIMS, Manipur University today, AIR News Editor Dr A Ibomcha Sharma said that media persons, being the professionals of an important pillar of democracy, are now needed as journalists, public relations executives, spin doctors, information managers, content creators and also in academic avenues in different capacities.

“The demand will be on the rise and it has to, in line with the changing paradigm of telecommunication, trade, tourism and other transformations in many fields of social life. However, the demand at the global job market of media is par excellent product and grooming such professionals is not an easy thing”, he said.

Since Media plays the role of a watchdog in society who always manages to highlight the errors of Politicians, Judiciary and executives through constructive criticism, Media itself is supposed to render its service to the society sincerely to avoid trust deficit. Otherwise the sanctity of the media professionals would be maligned.

While quoting former Indian president Dr APJ Abdul Kalam’s line “When you salute your profession, you need not salute anybody; when you pollute your profession, you need to salute everybody”, he said that every professional, may be doctors, engineers, journalists or IAS officers, need to serve the people with sincerity and dedication to win public respect. When they pollute their professions with personal profit oriented motive, they will not get public respect.

Impact TV Chief Editor Yumnam Rupachandra spoke on how a responsible media can help bring about major change in society and how you can become a responsible journalist.

He said that media influences people to help the people to bring about a better society. It plays a vital role in strengthening democracy, keeping the people well informed. Being a journalist is one of the noble professions as journalists serve people from top to bottom. When there is no elected opposition in a government, media effectively takes the role of opposition to criticize and brakes the wrong policies of the government.

Senior journalist. Editor-in-Chief of Impact TV Yumnam Rupachandra is a former correspondent of The Statesman and Seven Sisters Post. He is a fellow National Press Foundation (DC Washington, Alumni IVLP (US State Dept) and SRDM awardee World Bank.

Khelen Thokchom, Special Correspondent of Telegraph, national daily said that mainstream Indian media is losing its objectivity due to extensive commercialization of the news business. Editors have little role in deciding editorial contents in contradictory to what the editors are supposed to do with young CEOs dictating terms on what the readers want.  It is because of this that instead of carrying a picture or story of a poor and pathetic farmer on the verge of suicide, editors are opting for pictures of celebrities like Aishwarya Rai or hospitalization of another well known actor.

Concerned about the increasing trend of ‘paid news’ in the state, the senior journalist said that such trend will lead to trust deficit on the part of the journalists and malign the profession.  When journalists are under the hands of a few powerful, how can they bring about a dynamic change in society by revealing the malpractices of the people in power. People generally believe what the journalists expressed through their pen. When the mouth of the journalists is shut up with money, they cannot highlight the news what the people need most.

Kuki Research Forum Reply to IMF’s Rejoinder : KuRF PR

Apropos the International Meitei Forum states stand-a rejoinder by Pu Ch. Birendra dated appearing in the 4th and 5th June, 2015 issues of The Sangai Express and other local dailies,

Apropos the International Meitei Forum states stand-a rejoinder by Pu Ch. Birendra dated appearing in the 4th and 5th June, 2015 issues of The Sangai Express and other local dailies, the Kuki Research Forum (KuRF) wishes to clear any whiff of resultant misconception on the intellectual credibility of KuRF that is bound to emanate from the level at which the ongoing public spate has further degenerated into one of personal attacks, name calling, wild invectives and innuendos.

The forum initially responded to Pu R.K Rajendro, President, International Meitei Forum’s incendiary, baseless, communal and exclusivist statements made in his inflammatory speech on ISTV dated 16th May 2015 as it appeared to the forum that the esteemed individual was attempting to incite communal passion based solely on wild and unfounded distortion of Kuki indigenity in the state of Manipur.

The KuRF is independent and guided by the vision of intellectual integrity and logic and stands for peaceful co-existence above all else. Irrational arguments or one that borders on violence does not find place in the forum. The forum generally does not comment on everything and from every individual or group that claim to espouse the cause of the Kukis. However, given the nature of IMF’s provocative and historically untenable statements, KuRF is obliged to issue its last reply/rejoinder for the introspection of IMF and discernment of the public. The forum call upon all esteemed readers, intellectuals, scholars, academicians, Political leaders and concerned citizens of the state to exercise their best judgment as to which of the two forums is attempting to sow seeds of communal hatred, parochial sentiments and disintegration of Manipur.

  1. First, your salutary address with the words “D/Descendant of Immigrants” is in bad taste and the tone and tenor of your write up is rather conspicuous for the absolute lack of basic decency and factual veracity, normally expected in a civilized discourse, and not so much for the historical narrative. Through its brazen attack on Kuki-Chins, IMF exposes a total absence of both academic scholarship and dignified restraint.

  1. The level of your discomfiture with KuRF reasoned response dated 1st of June, 2015, has apparently overwhelmed you so much so that you have taken recourse to the all too familiar strategy of divide-and-strike, first by dividing the Kukis into New and Old as the British Colonial did and second, by amusing attempts at entangling the Naga community into this fruitless diatribe, the significance of which is not lost sight of.

In so far as the intra-ethnic relationship among consanguineous brothers viz., the so called Old and New Kukis are concerned, the KuRF is conscious of the apparent fragmentation between the two, but suffice to say here that the fundamentals (Stalk) are too strong not to withstand divisions (Barks) as in a family (Tree). It is but natural for siblings from a common parentage to evolve into nucleated families of their own which in no way repudiates their root. And, may it be noted that when push comes to shove, the identity will still find its hold as strong as ever. Historically, linguistically, socially and culturally they belong to Kuki-Chin family. There is no scientific or ethnographic basis for distinguishing between ‘Old’ and ‘New’ Kukis. The semantic, ‘Kuki’, if anything, binds both Old and New under one irrefutable identity and destiny.

  1. The KuRF appreciates the latest statement of the IMF that ‘Meiteis and Nagas are indigenous people of Manipur’. The Manipur government was also contemplating at one point of time to make an official declaration that Meiteis and one particular community of Manipur are blood brothers. This is almost in line with what T.C. Hudson had said; “Meiteis, Kukis and Nagas are brothers.” Unlike IMF, the KuRF considers Meiteis, Nagas and Kukis as indigenous people of Manipur with significant affinities. The perceived ethnic ties between Naga and Meiteis are indeed a positive sign of historical milestone by scholars and intellectuals who transcends the mythological barriers to establish new and emerging genealogical findings on continuing basis. But these apparent gung-ho is surprisingly intermittent and situational as they are contextual to needs and nothing more. IMF’s policy of dividing tribals would lead to more anti-Meitei and anti-Manipur rhetoric’s, thereby causing irreparable damage to the tribals’ ties with the majority Meiteis. The IMF’s desperate attempt to divide the tribals is bound to be an exercise in futility. It is high time for the IMF to realize that Manipur is not mono-cultural but multi-cultural and multi-racial. The political problem that beset Manipur, then and now could be resolved only when policies and strategies reflect this diversity.
  2. Why are the issue of Immigrants (Foreigners) and Nomads so dear to IMF and its tall leaders? Northeast India has been described as ‘one of the greatest migration routes of mankind’ (Barpujari: 1992. 35). Various ethnic groups came to Manipur from pre-historic times. The present ethnic groups of Manipur, viz., the Meiteis, the Naga tribes, the Kuki-Chin tribes and other Indian communities are the descendants of those migrating people. (H.S.Sharma, History of Manipur: An Independent Kingdom, 2011). The entire people of Manipur belong to the same ethnic group (N. Tombi Singh:1972.17). Meiteis had their ultimate origin in the hill areas of Manipur. (V. Chakravarty 1986). “Manipuris(Meiteis) are a mixed race between the Kukis and the Nagas.” (Elwin 1969, 451). Grierson, Konow, S.K. Chatetterjee and many other linguists classified Meitei under Kuki-Chin group of the Tibeto-Burman group of language. Touthingmang, the third Meitei king was from Touthang clan. (Manimohan, Poirei Sanna Leibak). Nongdam Lairen pakhangba, the first historically recorded king of the Meithis (Meiteis)’s mother was a Kuki woman named ‘Lenghoi’ or Nungmaidenga. (William Shaw 1929:47-48). As Reid said, while the Raja reigned over the valley of Manipur, the Kukis “ruled the roost in the hills that surrounded the valley of Manipur. (History of the North East Bordering on Assam). IMF’s repeated attempt to suppress the historical truth is motivated and a slur to basic right of every ethnic community to dwell peaceably in the land that has been their own since known history, to develop and progress and to contribute their share in the evolution of Manipur culture and civilization.

Nonetheless, the sequence of inroads into present state of Manipur by one ethnic group preceding/succeeding another is a normative reality and does not in any way confer the right of exclusive ownership over land or its resources to one group to the exclusion of others nor does it deprive the later migrants of their right to claim ownership over the land settled by their ancestors.

  1. The Kukis of Manipur are Indian by nationality and indigenous tribe of Manipur by birth and descent. James Johnstone, writing on Kukis as being heard for the first time in between 1830-1840 in Manipur valley similarly betrays a monumental misunderstanding or ignorance or both. The British colonialists may have transferred some Kukis from one area to another, but it is hugely preposterous to imply these relocations to account for the entire Kuki population. Normally, immigrants and nomads have no land and do not conquer land and people. The Kukis have land and country to rule over, to fight wars to protect their land to conquer others as shown during the Kuki Rising (1917-19). The Kukis have been a dependable ally for the Meitei Maharajas from the first historic King Meidingu Nongda Lairen Pakhangba to the times of Chandrakirty. They upheld mutual co-existence, peace and dignified relations with Meiteis and in that spirit had opposed the Manipur Merger Agreement and patiently attempted to make the state of Manipur a success in the post independent period. The exclusivist and chauvinist attitude of fanatic elements as represented by IMF are consistently trying to destroy the historically friendly relations between the Kukis and Meiteis. After the merger of Manipur with the India Union in 1949, the erstwhile communalities of the state of Manipur have become citizen of India. The Kukis are as much indigenous and masters over the land they occupy as any other community in Manipur and don’t owe anybody any explanation for their existence. Perhaps, the IMF argument is based on The History of Manipur by J.Roy (PP.2 &34)
  2. With regard to your farfetched innuendo of killing Meitei’s as a pattern within an overall strategic domination architecture to populate and dominate Manipur by Kukis, it made a nice fairy tale reading and nothing needs to be said where imagination can take one to ridiculous conclusions! On various incidents that you mentioned, surely, there would have been incidents and differences of opinion and even misunderstandings. Such things do happen between neighbours and sometimes inevitable. However, these incidents and occasional differences of opinion should be set aside keeping in mind the larger interest.

Lastly, the Kuki Research Forum again reiterate that every saner element within the Meitei and Kuki communities should guard against grossly false, misleading, communal and historically untenable utterances and statements of IMF. Since KuRF stands for peaceful co-existence among the different communities of Manipur, the forum would like to have scholarly debates and discussions with Meitei civil societies other than the IMF (which need not be engaged seriously) by looking at the past to explain the present situation for constructive dialogue and debate. Be that as it may, the fulcrum of the KuRF rejoinder rest on the non-negotiable rights of Kukis as a citizen of India and indigenous ethnic community from the throes of pre-historic age right down to the age of post-independent India; which was, is and shall remain an abiding reality for now and for posterity.

Issued by Kuki Research Forum, they can be contacted at kukiresearchforum@yahoo.com

NORTHEAST COMMUNITY LEADERS MET UNION HOME MINISTER SHRI KIREN RIJIJU TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF CIVILIANS IN CHANDEL DISTRICT FOLLOWING THE AMBUSH AND KILLING OF 18 SECURITY FORCES IN MANIPUR

New Delhi,9th June, 2015 ~Collective delegation from the Northeast Region of India met  Mr. Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister of State on 8th June 2015 in North Block to appeal for his immediate intervention to the recent situation in Chandel District of Manipur. IROM SHARMILA’S COURT APPEARANCE & INSENSITIVITY OF STATE

PRESS RELEASE

Irom Sharmila appeared before the metropolitan magistrate Akash Jain in the Patiala session court of Delhi on 5th and 6th June 2015. The Court was required to record statements of the witnesses that included the doctors along with another person who had recorded the protest of Jantar Mantar when Irom Sharmila was in Delhi in 2006.

In this case, the Delhi police had lodged FIR upon Irom Sharmila under section 309 of “Attempt to suicide’. Now as doctors did not come, the next date was given by the court with the hope that it will be the final hearing.

Save sharmila solidarity campaign (SSSC) members accompanied Irom Sharmila in the Court and were present in the court in solidarity. Campaign observed that though it was a judicial requirement, but such kind of hearings are mere unnecessarily harassment on the name of section 309 upon a human rights activist. It is a clear contradiction in Irom Sharmila’s case as while she is fighting for right to life, she is being charged with the allegation of taking away the right to life.

It is also observed that despite Irom Sharmila’s desire to meet Prime minister of India, prime minister Office have not called for any meeting yet. It is her demand since long time that she is hopeful with democracy and she wants to meet Prime minister. Save Sharmila Soldarity Campaign believes that not calling a meeting with her is actually a denial of state to meet this crusader of non-violence. It is a time when Irom Sharmila has global supporters to raise voice for her cause, but despite all efforts and unparalleled sacrifice and struggle, Indian state is continuously ignoring and suppressing her. It is unfortunate that the government is giving priority of talks with those who are adopting violent ways, but it is continuously ignoring the non-violence.

Save Sharmila Solidarity Campaign is already involved in campaigning and will increase its activities from coming months to spread awareness and to advocate for the cause of Irom Sharmila.

SSSC also condemns the Manipur attack and the questioning of demand of repeal of AFSPA. It was reported and SSSC reiterates the statement of Irom Sharmila who had condemned the Manipur attack. She regarded the killing of soldiers to be shocking and shameful. She has always condemned killing which is the reason for her protest. She regards killing, no matter by whom, as shameful and unacceptable. She had also said that this incident happened in a region which is under full control of AFSPA but still it happened. It shows that AFSPA has not been the solution.

SSSC agrees and fully supports her view. SSSC feels that such attacks are also failure of state itself as it seems that state has not even capable of protecting its own functionaries. Also, the fact remains that the common people are the sufferers of atrocities of both the state and anti-state groups. Through AFSPA, the state has been involved in performing extreme atrocities upon common people in past. SSSC believes that imposing hard laws like AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) in civil areas are of no use and it has been used against people widely. There must be a strategy to remove AFSPA from all areas of North East and J&K as without it confidence building cannot be done. AFSPA is a failed law and it must go.

STATEMENT REGARDING MANIPUR AMBUSH AND THE RETALIATION
TO ALL THE CONCERNED PERSONS
(1) Instability and unrest are prevailing in India due to political economic constraints and the lack of the skill to build a stable country. As a result, various forms of unrests are persistent.
(2) No one happily embraces war. However, it is an open secret that the war between the rebels and the Indian army, which have lasted for more than 50 years, is a reflection of the political and economic constraints and the instability.
(3) It is known to many that several innocent civilians are victims of this war. This fact have been acknowledged by the Government of India constituted commissions, civil society reports, the United Nations and other international human rights bodies.
(4) Many peoples, for decades, have been urging upon those who revolt and those who carry out counter-rebellion to respect human rights. On the other hand, acknowledging the pains at the killings of either the rebels or the Indian army and the grievances of the respective survivor families, many have been demanding an end to this war. It is unfortunate that, this call for peace has not been respected by the political leaders who on their part have failed to bring a peaceful democratic solution.
(5) The recent ambush on the Indian Army by some rebel groups on June 4, 2015 in Manipur’s Chandel district and the Indian army’s retaliation in the form of a combing operation are not new phenomenon. These are the manifestations of the never ending war situation.
(6) Whether the Indian army would courageously and consistently fight against the rebels or not and under what tactics will be the political decision of the Government of India. However, it is the concern and voice of the people that unarmed civilians should not be the object of target and that the onus should not be imposed upon them when the two armed groups are in conflict.
(7) We feel that the ongoing combing operation is an emotive revenge following the ambush. The armed rebels must have fled; but the onus is being imposed on the villagers who live in and around the battlefield. It is similar to a situation when two vehicles met with an accident and the blame was on those who were living near the accident site. There were instances in the past, when the Indian army killed some rebels in a village and the rebels held the villagers responsible for it. The two characters are similar. We disagree with it.
(8) The ongoing operation in Chandel since 4 June, 2015 have sieged several villagers and we can feel their fear and grievances. In this situation the Indian army need to create a good impression about itself, within India and internationally, by making the combing operation more transparent and publicly accountable. We can understand the emotive sentiment of the Indian army and the hyper-nationalism circulated in the social media. However, it is advisable that they must not keep the people totally dark about the condition of the villagers; but allow the media and respectable civil societies to get access to the sieged villages.
(8) The removal of the restrictions on the entry of media and respectable civil societies will overcome the fear and grievances of the concerned villagers whose communication with the outside world have been cut off.
(9) We want peace: Ensure the security, rights and integrity of civilians during war.

PRESS RELEASE:

Front View

The FIRST ALL MANIPUR QURANIC COMPETITION 2015 was held on 31st May 2015 and about 500 people attended including Non-Muslims. Total of 120 students participated in the quiz which Md. Abdus Samad anchored the event.

Before the event, a preliminary written test was conducted from which 16 applicants who scored the highest marks were selected for quiz competition.

The programme started with a Qirat of Surah Al-Fatihah by Moulana Qari Mubarak Ali, Multipurpose Educational Centre and followed by a short exposition of its meaning. Next a keynote address along with welcome address was given by Abdul Halim, Organiser, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Manipur state, in which he put forward the view that the competition was organized in order to create an interest in learning the Quran with meanings and understandings. He pointed out that unfortunately the people in Manipur including Muslims have neglected learning the meaning of the Quran. They have put the Quran under wraps and on high racks and read without understanding its meaning. If they learn the teachings of the Quran, many problems faced by the people in Manipur, including corruption, drug abuse and laziness could have been solved. This was followed by a presentation of the motto of the function by Dr. Nazimuddin Chisti, Professor and Orthopaedic Surgeon, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences. He quoted many verses of the Quran, which enlighten thoughts of our young generation.

Kheiruddin as the Quiz Master opened the quiz with the instructions of the competition. Then one question each was put in rotation to all the four groups in eight rounds. This was followed by Rapid Fire Round, in which 5 questions each put to each group in rapid succession. The quiz was concluded with Buzzer Round in which the questions were thrown to all the groups, and the group which answered first got the score. There were questions for audience at the end of each general round.

An easier way of learning Quran was demonstrated by Moulvi Zakaria, in which the audiences participated to learn the eight kinds of pronouns used often in the Quran.

Then the prizes were distributed by Md. Roushan Ali, Founder Secretry, Islamic Baby English School, Lilong.

Vote of thanks was given by Abdulhalim and he announced that the Quran Quiz will be an annual feature of the Quran Foundation. No questions set will be given before-hand in the next year. The syllabus of next Quran quiz competition will be the content of the holy book “Quran” and therefore all are asked to learn the Quran in the coming months.

Lean Startup Workshop 2 motivates budding entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurship is not about dreaming but to act. Sharing of knowledge and support among themselves is a must.

20150530-Lean-Startup-Workshop-2

IMPHAL, May 30: Dynamic Manipur in collaboration with Globizs Web Solutions and MIMS, MU organized its second workshop event series ‘Lean Startup worshop’ at Hotel Yaiphaba Thangal Bazar Imphal here today.

The workshop is organized with the objective of building up a Startup eco-system in Manipur which can help in creating more number of successful entrepreneurs thereby solving the unemployment problems and bringing a sustainable economic solution.

Managing Director of Globizs Web Solution Roshinikumar Yambem and Business start up expert from USA,  CEO Zeenova Inc and Co-Founder and VP Eng and Strategy, Akasia Inc.  Gautam Thokchom spoke on the needs in starting up a business during the workshop.

Gautam Thokchom, CEO Zeenova Inc and Co-Founder and VP Eng and Strategy, Akasia Inc. said that entrepreneurship is an absolute freedom what a man wants whatever he wants to do. It is not about dreaming but to act. Entrepreneurs should not be considered as people who are earning money for themselves, but as people who are contributing to the society by providing employment to many jobless.

He said advised the aspiring entrepreneurs to not lose heart at the initial failure, but to work harder.

Delivering his speech as resource person, Managing Director of Globizs Web Solution Roshinikumar Yambem  said for every entrepreneur, learning ‘failed fast, succeed fast is a must. A business cannot succeed without experiencing failures in the initial stage. Success stories of many entrepreneurs were scripted after experiencing failures.

Entrepreneurs are new kind of breeds among human beings. Society is the stakeholder of the entrepreneurs’ business enterprise. When the entrepreneurs fall down, the society too falls down. In the context of Manipur, knowledge sharing and mutual co-operation among the entrepreneurs is very poor. For achieving success in business, knowledge sharing and support among the entrepreneurs is a must, he observed.

He said that a budding entrepreneur, before launching his product, should have a clear cut long vision, good business plan and the scope of customers who would use the product. Without customers, every business flops.

He said that the lean startup event is an endeavour to extract the ideas of global business methodology and apply the same in our local business context.

PRESS RELEASE

TRIPURA IS START, AFSPA MUST GO FROM EVERYWHERE: SSSC

Announcement of Repeal AFSPA from Tripura is a welcome move. We, at Save Sharmila Solidarity Campaign, convey our sincere thanks to Govt of Tripura as well as MHA for considering the move. We believe that repeal of AFSPA from Tripura is a decision in favor of democracy and humanity.

Save Sharmila Solidarity Campaign (SSSC) view this incident as ‘moving from inertia of AFSPA’. It is because since many years and even after continuous demands by people and rights groups, AFSPA was not even diluted a bit. No government or security agencies have taken any positive steps towards its repeal and were isolated from this issue. No one in the government even wanted to talk about the issue and those who were in government never tried to break the ice and ignored people’s demand.

As, SSSC had already stated in several other campaigning moments, AFSPA does not have people’s mandate. We also believe that by breaking this inertia, there is a signal of something positive. A start was awaited.

As Tripura is one of the states of North East region of India, repealing AFSPA from this state also sends a message of confidence and hope among all other people who are residing in AFSPA zone presently. We also see that this start must become dynamic very soon and governments must try to repeal it from every where.

We demand with the government to immediately pay attention towards Manipur also where Irom Sharmila is on a continuous fast since the last 15 years. Keeping AFSPA in Manipur is against the will and future of state. We demand with state and central government both to coordinate and cooperate with each other to end the impasse over AFSPA. For Manipur, state leadership of central ruled patry  was already promised repeal of AFSPA.

SSSC believes that AFSPA that was extended to J&K vide AFSPA-J&K, should also be repealed as victimisation and sufferings cannot be looked separately. A human rights violation is always a violation of human rights regardless of region. in J&K, so many incidents of killings, rapes and disappeances have already been reported and evidences were provided even before courts against many security officials, but due to impunity under AFSPA (section 7), nothing could be done against culprits.

SSSC also see that enjoying such an impunity that AFSPA provides is actually a corruption and it is absolutely not required for any responsible , honest and committed security force personals. In contrary, it becomes dangerous as such absolute powers divert the normal way of working of personals.

SSSC appeals with the state and central government to immediately act upon this long pending demand of Repeal AFSPA. AFSPA is not required not only in Tripura but in no other AFSPA state. AFSPA is a failed law.SSSC will continue its efforts and will be organising protests and active campaigning in coming months for advocating Repeal of AFSPA from every where.

North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) welcomes the move of Tripura government to repeal Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from Tripura state. It is to be noted that AFSPA was imposed in Tripura from last 18 years. AFSPA grants special powers to the armed forces, the most controversial being the legal immunity it provides to army officers. AFSPA is an anti-people, oppressive act, the law gives special powers for detaining, using lethal force and entering and searching premises without warrant.
