Manipur Students’ Association Delhi (MSAD) Press statement

3rd October 2014

A demonstration expressing solidarity to the courageous stand of the international boxer Laishram Sarita against injustice and condemning bribery and favouritism in sports was held today, 3rd October 2014, in front of the office of the Indian Olympic Association in New Delhi. In fact Sarita had dominated the semi-final bout against her South Korean opponent Jina Park, at the recently held 17th Asian Games, at Incheon in South Korea. But the judges had favoured the host country and had awarded the bout to her opponent. Sarita had applied for a protest but it was rejected on certain alleged technical grounds. The Indian officials had failed to help in her fight for justice. But Sarita continued with the protest and refused to accept the bronze medal awarded to her. During the medal ceremony she took the medal by the hands and hung it around the neck of Jina who have been awarded silver medal. The organisers took a dim view of Sarita’s action and initiated for a disciplinary action. Finally Sarita was forced to either accept the medal or face the consequence of some harsh disciplinary action. The issue of injustice, bribery or favouritism in the sports in general and irresponsible attitude of the Indian officials have been covered up.

NEFIS emphasized that with the students and the oppressed masses of the North East facing the same problems such as deterioration of traditional communitarian living, encroachment of corporations in their land holdings, environmental degradation, racism and lack of good educational opportunities due to the spread of the capitalist market in these regions. It is time that they break away from the bureaucratic and community oriented organizations which seek patronage from the same mainstream parties which perpetuate inequalities so that they can come together and fight for their common demands thereby carrying forward the real legacy of Comrade Irabot instead of fighting amongst themselves.

MSAD Irabot Day Observation 2014 at New Delhi

30th September is the birth anniversary of the late pioneer Hijam Irabot (30 September 1896- 26 September 1951). Over the last many years, the day have been observed as Irabot Day by different organisations in their own ways. That there have not been any controversy vis-à-vis the different manners of observing the anniversary in the name of Irabot, have been due to the fact that Irabot was a pioneer in various fields.

In fact, Irabot had played pioneering role in various novel fields of Manipur. His roles may be summarized under the following themes; (1) literature and journalism, (2) art and culture, (3) sports, (4) social and economic reforms and (5) political revolution. What added more value while discussing the roles have been his livelihood. He was brought up as a destitute orphan. The then royal family were moved by his personality and had offered a princess in marriage. For that, he was offered properties and a prestigious job. However, he left those properties and job to become a revolutionary. He stood against various forms of oppression that were prevailing in the society: (a) against the feudal oppression or the monarchical regime, (b) against the British colonial rule, and (c) against the oppressive system of the Indian rulers. He played important role towards building a democratic Manipur. On the other hand, he took part in the struggle in the international movement to build a classless society.

Being a pioneer, Irabot have conveyed some messages to our people in the years to come. Those are: (1) As all human beings are being structured within a given political-economic condition; all positive and negative conditions in the society are the products of the political economy; (2) No individual can escape from the political economic structure. Therefore, the only means towards the growth of every individual is to improve the political economic conditions; (3) There is a small chunk of people, who is benefitted by keeping the condition of the society underdevelopment. They are the enemies of the society. Until and unless they are being identified, it is difficult to expose the enemies of the society. Until and unless they are being uprooted, the condition of the society cannot be improved; and (4) A peoples’ democratic movement is essential to develop the society. If armed revolution is essential in order to defend the democratic movement, there should be no frustration in doing that.

Our objectives of organising the Irabot Day Observation are primarily two; (1) To express our respect to the livelihood of Irabot and the roles that he had played, and (2) To have discussion on the messages that Irabot have conveyed to us. We are very serious about the second objective. Because, we are also keen towards making our society a peaceful, stable and fully developed society. In relation to this, there are many things that we would like to collectively discuss. Some of the discussions can be held on the following themes: (a) To which direction and on which path our political economy have been moving continuously since the times of Irabot? What are the forms of oppression and contradictions that have been created by this political economy? (c) Does our condition really calls for a new revolution? (d) What kind of revolution is being required? (d) Who will bring the revolution and how and to which direction?

We expect that all our friends will concentrate on the above issues and make our programme a grand success. May this programme become a step ahead and contribute to the making of a new Manipur.

Long live Hijam Irabot

Victory to people’s democratic revolution

PRESS RELEASE:

September 27, 2014; Shillong: IMAGENATION took the musical spirit of Shillong to a whole new level today as they organized Shillong Blues & Jazz Festival at the U Soso Tham Auditorium in the city. Supported by the Department of Arts and Culture, Government of Meghalaya, the Shillong Blues & Jazz Festival brought together 30 renowned musicians from across the country on a single platform to sing about peace, hope and reconciliation, providing wholesome entertainment and bringing everyone together through music. Other associates for the event are Asian Confluence, Hotel Polo Towers, NIIT, etc.

The performance line-up for the Shillong Blues & Jazz Festival included some of the most celebrated music bands in the Blues and Jazz scenario. The festival opened with the performance of Shillong’s very own Lou Majaw and his friends, who entertained the audience with their best known hits. This performance was followed by Guwahati’s three-piece band M-Trio, blues experimental band Fringes, celebrated jazz pianist Ronojit Chaliha with Cello player Adiel Massar, funk jazz and blues band 4th Element, Shillong based Blues icon Rudy Wallang and Andrea, Parvati La Cantante from Delhi and came to an end with Plan B’s jazz-pop, blues and country-rock compositions.

Ian Khongmen, Imagenation, said, “The Shillong Blues & Jazz Festival is just a drop in the ocean of music, but it brings together extraordinary musicians who are committed to and have made this art form a way of life. They come in all shades and colours, from the metros Delhi, Kolkata and mainland India to collaborate and run in the same groove with their brethren from the Northeast.”

“Blues & Jazz is but an evolution of the music culture. It is symbolic of our times and indeed breathes life into the music industry and still remains the foundation of a tradition that has evolved for many years”, he adds.

On the occasion Lou Majaw said, “Music has no boundaries. My vision is to promote peace, harmony and brotherhood through my songs and music. We musicians treat our musical instrument as our arms and amenities to combat terrorism. This is our way of contributing towards peace as a musician.”

“I fail to understand the madness behind terrorism. My song – ‘Well well well’ speaks my feelings when I see no sun on waking up in this world of terror. But life must go on”, added Lou Majaw.

Haraba, the vocalist of Imphal based Blues band – ‘Fringes’ is very excited with the initiative of Imagenation. Explaining about the nature of ‘Blues’, he said, “Through this form of music we can express our life’s experience and feelings. This form of the music is all about story telling of things happening in your surroundings.”

‘Such initiatives by government give platform and meaning to our band and culture.” he added speaking on the initiative of Imagenation.

Delhi based singer, Parvati La Cantante, was very excited to be part of the Blues & Jazz Festival. On her maiden visit to Shillong she said, “We have never been in a town where music is so important, it is like the life blood of Shillong. The air is all about music, there is a rhythm in the air that I love. These musicians Lou, AJ and Rudy have huge influences on my life, I have grown up listening to them perform. I have never imagined coming to Shillong as a musician, I feel really honoured to be invited to perform at the SB&J.”

About her performance, Parvati adds, “The set that we performed is a mix of all the songs that we enjoyed doing. There are influences of Jazz, R&B and little bit of side trance to make it a little peppy.  We did not want to limit our scope to just guitar and vocals, so we have tried to broaden up our horizon with these additions.”

Besides the performances, there will be various other surprises in store for the audience. Among them will be the SB&J Festival’s food court, which will tickle the taste buds of the audience by dishing out Indonesian, Chinese, Naga and authentic Khasi food.

There was also an amazing art installation at the venue as a part of a contest, where the visitors can take selfies with the installation and upload it on the festival’s Facebook page. The person uploading the best selfie will get a special gift autographed by all the performers of SB&J Festival.

The SB&J Festival endeavours to drive local change, promote self confidence, create economic value, generate positive thinking and promote reconciliation through quality music. The festival aims at being a catalyst of positive change for one and all. Briefly, it seeks to spread the message of peace through music.

IMAGENATION to drive positive social change through music

September 25, 2014; Shillong/Guwahati: IMAGENATION is all set to sway Shillong with yet another of its bold initiative – the Shillong Blues & Jazz Festival that will be held at U Soso Tham Auditorium on September 27, 2014. Supported by the Department of Arts and Culture, Government of Meghalaya, the Shillong Blues & Jazz Festival will bring 30 renowned musicians from across the country to sing about peace, hope and reconciliation, providing wholesome entertainment and bringing everyone together through music. Other associates for the event are Asian Confluence, Hotel Polo Towers, NIIT, etc.

Press Meet - ImageNation Shillong Blues & Jazz Festival

Press Meet – ImageNation Shillong Blues & Jazz Festival

The performance line-up for the Shillong Blues & Jazz Festival includes some of the most celebrated music bands in the Blues and Jazz scenario like Lou Majaw, 4th Element, Rudy Wallang Band featuring Andrea, Fringes, Arjun Sen, M Trio, Ronojit Chaliha, Adiel Massar, Plan B, Parvati La Cantante, etc.

Speaking to the media at the press club today, Ian Khongmen, Imagenation, said, “The Shillong Blues & Jazz Festival is just a drop in the ocean of music, but it brings together extraordinary musicians who are committed to and have made this art form a way of life.

Music is in the DNA of Shillong, and what better way to celebrate this musical spirit, than recognizing the music heritage of Shillong. The Shillong Blues & Jazz Festival is a tribute to the music of Shillong and an attempt to honour musicians all over who are connected by a common thread of passion in music.

Shillong’s very own Lou Majaw, who was also present on the occasion, expressed his excitement in being associated with this event. “’Music is life… Life is music… Bare your soul for music… where else but the Shillong Blues & Jazz Festival! – Lou pensively expresses amidst the cacophony and hustle and bustle.

The SB&J Festival endeavours to drive local change, promote self confidence, create economic value, generate positive thinking and promote reconciliation through quality music. The festival aims at being a catalyst of positive change for one and all. Briefly, it seeks to spread the message of peace through music.

Commenting on the Shillong Blues & Jazz festival, Jazz pianist Ronojit Chaliha spoke, “This one of a kind festival is a great opportunity for the people of Shillong and Guwahati to have an idea of what Jazz and Blues sound like in a live setting with spontaneous improvisation. I expect this festival to get audiences interested and curious to know more about this form of music. It’s a great start!”

A member of Kolkata based Jazz band Plan B says, “Plan B comes from a part of the country where, unfortunately, cover music rules. The audience is stuck in a time warp, so it’s been doubly difficult to be ‘heard’ performing live original music. Hence, it gives us the greatest pleasure to have been invited to perform our own brand of jazz-pop, blues and country-rock compositions, songs and tunes that are very special to us, at the Shillong Blues and Jazz Festival.”

Besides the performances, there will be various other surprises in store for the audience. Among them will be the SB&J Festival’s food court, which will tickle the taste buds of the audience by dishing out Chinese, Naga, Malaysian and authentic Khasi food. There is also a surprise for the foodies, well wishers and passer-byes.

Prior to this event, Imagenation has organized various popular events in the city, such as Bob Dylan celebration, Free ur Mind, Rock the Republic, Street Plays, Road Shows and other similar activations.

Performers at Shillong Blues and Jazz Festival

Lou Majaw needs no introduction. With an unmatched musical career spanning 50 years, he is the performer, the entertainer and the central character in Shillong’s enduring romance with music. Age has not limited Lou’s love and passion for music.

Ronojit Chaliha is a Jazz Pianist who trained with a renowned Piano Pedagogue, Roxana Anklesaria-Doctor. He is currently involved in Adil Manuel’s project in Delhi and performs regularly in cities like Mumbai (Café Zoe, Blue Frog), Delhi (Delhi Jazz Fest) and Pune (Shisha Jazz Café). He has also had the honour of performing at the Caux Palace in Switzerland and has worked with various Jazz musicians from across the Americas and Europe.

Adiel Massar started playing Cello at the age of 14. He was under the tutelage of Austrian Cellist, Eva Itzlinger who briefly helped him and is one of the few Cellists in India who plays a rare combination of both, Western Classical and Jazz. He is currently playing Cello for the North-Eastern Jazz Collective and has played with many great musicians like F.A. Talafaral, a renowned Saxophonist from Madagascar, Karan Joseph, an upcoming Jazz Piano player from Mumbai and Cesare Picco, a Pianist from Italy.

The Rudy Wallang Band is a natural progression for a musician who deserves plaudits for his natural skills with the guitar. Another homegrown Shillong icon who has made a mark in the Blues genre all over, Rudy Wallang is another persona in the endearing love story with music. A performer par excellence at international platforms, he takes the home stage this time in his nom de plume, together with pedigree, surprising one and all.

4th Element are Sarah, Ribor, Amit, Jeff and the one and only Sam Shullai. Their music a mix of funk jazz and blues transcends barriers to brighten up any music aficionado’s dull day. The synergy of Sarah’s sublime vocals, Ribor’s keys, Amits and Jeffs riffs and Sam’s excellence on the percussion says it all. You won’t want to miss this music!

Fringes is a blues experimental band from Manipur. Fringes is a blend of both young and old. It is young in the sense that the members have come together under the banner recently in the winter of 2010. The name of the band denotes the predicament existence of being at the margins and yet rooted to the core of an evolution. The band believes that art is an offshoot of the living reality, not created in vacuum. Fringes band members also grew up exposed to this environment. They opted western music in its form and infuses it with organic reality of contemporary Manipur in content.

M-Trio is a three piece band from Guwahati with Manasquam Mahanta on Guitars, Pritam Boro on Keyboards and Partho Boro on Drums.

Plan B is a Jazz band from Kolkata. It plays Saturday nights at Someplace Else at The Park, Kolkata. Plan B has performed pan-India. They were recently invited to perform at the highly-acclaimed Windmills Craftworks in Bangalore.

Parvati La Cantante from Delhi is the surprise draw for the SB& J Festival. She sings many languages and together with Pranai Gurung on the guitar is amazing. Parvati La Cantante sings one of the most amazing set of covers and along with the simple medley of electronic guitar, the experience will surely be simply ecstatic.

Coordination of Democratic Rights Organisation (CDRO)

Press Release

16th September 2014

Coordination of Democratic Rights Organisation (CDRO) strongly condemns the arrest and detention of rights activists in Manipur by the Manipur state government since 8 September 2014.

On 8 September, the Manipur police, apart from vandalizing the office of the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS), picked up 12 rights activist in retaliation against an untoward incident of altercation between students’ wing of JCILPS and Mr. Yengkhom Devson, brother of Additional SP Mrs. Y. Victoria. Mr. Devson was summoned in the office for his reported alleged misbehavior against the members of JCILPS in his office. He was reportedly beaten by the activist of the JCILPS after he allegedly misbehaved using harsh words to the activists. The Additional SP Victoria rushed to the JCILPS office to rescue her brother. Instead of controlling the situation, she, by misusing her official power to avenge the beating of her brother, with a team of Manipur police commando vandalized the office and arrested 12 rights activists, who were convened in the office for a discussion on the issues to be presented before the Manipur government on a proposed talk on the ILPS which was scheduled for the following day. They were being slapped with several sections of the IPC including 368/326/384/34 (common cause/wrongful concealment/voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapon/extortion). Neither warrant nor arrest memo was issued for the arrest of the rights activists. Highly irresponsible action of the Manipur police had derailed the possibility of bringing a democratic solution on the present crisis of Inner Line Permit System.

The possibility of dialogue was further aggravated by the continuous repression and crackdown on rights activists by the Manipur government. All the schools, colleges and educational institutions were shut down for a week by government as a measure to prevent the students from protesting against the illegal detention. On 11 September, Manipur police arrested 5 activist and charged them under IPC sections 457 (lurking at house, trespass to commit offence), 436 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy house), 427/34 IPC and 149/120-B IPC. They were also charged of being involved in the arson of SDC and PHC buildings located at Bashikhong. The Manipur police continue to conduct raids and search operations to arrest rights activist. 20 more activists were arrested on 12 September including elderly women and students. CDRO strongly believes that a policy of repression and suppression against rights activist will not bring solution to the present crisis. Rather we demand the state government to stop all activities of repression and suppression of rights activists and create conditions for dialogue.

As AFSPA is withdrawn from the Imphal Municipal Area, normal procedure under the Constitution is applicable in this area. However, the present crackdown against the rights activists blatantly violated both the procedural norms of the state and also infringed upon the terms and conditions laid down by the honorable Supreme Court of India regarding the powers conferred to the Union security forces only in disturbed areas where AFSPA is being enforced. The rationality of the police action clearly indicates that despite lifting AFSPA from the Imphal Municipal Area, there still works a ‘police raj’ under the suzerainty of the Manipur government.

CDRO therefore demands withdrawal of AFSPA and ending of police raj. We demand the Manipur government to stop crackdown against rights activists and initiate a dialogue to bring a solution on the present crisis. We strongly demand release of all the arrest and detention without any condition and to uphold the rule of law.

Kukis in Delhi observe ‘Kuki Black Day’

The Kuki Students’ Organisation Delhi held a ‘Black Day’ on Saturday at Jantar Mantar. The Day of mass mourning marks the commemoration of the inhuman massacre of over 900 innocent Kukis between 1992 and 1996 by the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagalim(Isaac-Muivah) or more popularly known as NSCN-IM, especially on the September 13, 1993.

While urging the mass of about 1500 from different Kuki communities to not forget the fateful event, Chungkhokai Haokip, President of KSOD said, “We have not been mobilised here to generate hatred in our minds, but to seek justice for the departed souls.”

Speaking on the occassion, senior students and leaders discussed the historical background and the significance of the ‘Black Day’ observation. Amongst the speakers were Pu Sesei Lhungdim, Pu Lamkhotinthang Haokip, Dr. Letkhomang Haokip, Pu Henkholen Chongloi, Dr. Lhunkhothang Guite, Pu Ngamkhothang Haokip, Pu Kaikam Doungel, Pu Letkhotinthang Haokip and Pu Lunjalen Khongsai.

Kuki Black Day Delhi5

BACKGROUND:

The Kuki people observed “Black Day” across insurgency-hit Manipur on Sunday to mourn nearly 1,000 people of the community allegedly killed by NSCN (IM) militants during ethnic clashes in the early Nineties.

During the NSCN (I-M) campaign for ethnic cleansing in the hills of Manipur, many innocent Kuki lives had been lost, starting from 1950’s, highly aggravated during 1992-93. Quit Notices were served to Kuki people living peacefully in their villages in all parts of Manipur. The Kukis vacated many of their villages. A Quite Notice was also served to the Kuki people in Zoupi Village, Tamenglong District of Manipur. A deadline was fixed for them before which they had to vacate their village. Thus, the Kuki people unwilling to resist the dictates of the devilish NSCN (I-M) vacated the village before the deadline and move away from the village as a caravan toward Taphou. However, the devils intercepted them on the way, stop them, separated all the man, tight their hands at the back, blindfolded them and started butchering-off their heads (not wanting to spent bullets on them) killing 88 helpless, defenseless man at the spot in broad day light in the sight of their women and children. Another incident on the same day, at Gelnel Village in Sadar Hills District, 13 helpless Kukis were brutally murdered, 4 persons at Santing Village and yet another 3 at Nungthut Village (Tamenglong District). All together the death toll of the day reached 108 on 13th September 1993.

AIIMS CASE OF ASSAULT ON ARUNACHALI FEMALE NURSE

PRESS RELEASE Date: 12.09.2014 Nurses of AIIMS protest against assault on female nurse of New Emergency Ward FIR lodged Hauz Khas PS against the concerned patient’s relatives In yet another

PRESS RELEASE
Date: 12.09.2014

Nurses of AIIMS protest against assault on female nurse of New Emergency Ward
FIR lodged Hauz Khas PS against the concerned patient’s relatives

In yet another disturbing incident of the precarious conditions in which nurses are performing their duties, the capital city’s premiere medical institution, AIIMS, reported a serious case of physical assault of a female nurse by visiting relatives of a patient admitted in the hospital’s New Emergency Ward. The incident occurred on Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. when the female nurse on night duty asked five visitors of a patient, Mr. Sunil Kumar, to leave the New Emergency Ward as it was against the hospital policy to have more than one relative in the Ward at any given time. The female nurse, who is from Arunachal Pradesh, unfortunately became a victim of extremely aggressive behaviour on the part of two of the patient’s female relatives. Although the nurse maintained polite body language and asked them to calm down and step out of the ward, the situation merely worsened. One of the accused female visitors hit the nurse and has left strangulation marks on her throat.

The incident left the AIIMS nurses on duty highly enraged, and they called a spontaneous strike that lasted until the Hauz Khas police filed the FIR. The nurses’ representatives met the Director of AIIMS, who has promised to follow up the case with the Police (Please find attached a copy of the FIR).

The incident, however, is not one of its kind and is indicative of the hostile conditions of work that persist across hospitals, nursing homes, etc. In particular, such incidents are the result of larger problems like crumbling infrastructure in government hospitals and the significant shortage of nursing staff. In the case of the lack of adequate nursing staff, relatives and patient’s visitors become more prone to aggressive behaviour and impatience. Such shortage encourages the patients and their relatives to be believe that the hospital staff are ‘deliberately overlooking’ their needs/requests or are ‘simply throwing their weight around’, which is of course far from true. Misbehaviour and assaults are also spreading due to the lack of adequate infrastructure in government hospitals, such as waiting rooms/lobbies for patient’s relatives to rest/wait in. In the process, it is hapless nurses, very often female nurses, who then bear the brunt of visitors’ and patients’ anger/frustration.

Of course, as noted by Chinglen Khumukcham, of the North East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS), many working persons from the North East are very easily made targets of racist comments and assaults. This is especially so with North East women, like female nurses, etc. who are considered as ‘docile’ and ‘different’, and are therefore easily harassed. This assault in particular, according to NEFIS, was racist in nature since the accused kept pointing out to her physical features when attacking her. Similarly, Maya John from Centre for Struggling Women (CSW) noted that the larger exploitative trend of nurses’ working conditions and poor conditions of healthcare was allowing government hospitals to continuously expose their women work force to risks like assaults, sexual harassment, etc.

Police Commando Terror in Ukhrul Manipur, India, ancestral domain of the Naga Peoples, leaves two dead and dozens severely injured

Seven weeks of protest against State of Manipur siege of Ukhrul ended in orchestrated violence when security forces of Manipur, Police Commandos, fired into the peaceful Naga crowd of demonstrators Infuriating the entire Naga Nation.

While tears, anger and fear rule Ukhrul and beyond  the question is:

Why did the Police Commandos deployed by the Manipur Government attack the Tribal Naga people during a peaceful demonstration as they stood for their basic right, the right to self-determination?

The answer is complex but boils down to the point that Manipur does not recognize the ceasefire agreement between the Government of India, GOI, and the Government of the Naga Nation.

Numerous human rights violations preceded this bloody incident which should have warned the Government of India. Yet, when Ukhrul was besieged by troops of the Government of the State of Manipur no less than seven weeks ago, it did not intervene and so it implicitly told the Nagas that the ceasefire was null and void and that Manipur would be allowed to rule the Nagas.

The conflict between the Naga Nation and India has been raging since 1954 and is possible the longest running conflict of the modern world. After the British left the Nagas were first  divided between Burma and India and over time again within India between the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur and Nagaland. They were not consulted and want to be reunited. Since India invaded their territories the Nagas, who from 1929 declared they wanted to be free, successfully fought the troops of India with the result of a the second ceasefire and peace talks which commenced in 1997 and is ongoing till today.

But since Manipur does not want the Nagas to reunify but instead indulges in gross human rights violations which deadly policy the Government of India exonerates the Nagas in the state of Manipur are living on a powder keg ready to explode any time now.

Hence the Naga International Support Center calls on the International Community, notably the United Nations, and on all Human rights and conflict resolution organizations to hold the Indian Government responsible for allowing the Government of Manipur to murder, injure, sow fear and anguish.

Along with the Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights NISC condemns the use of high calibre live rounds by the counter insurgency forces against peaceful rallyists  killing two civilians while injuring more than 35 people on 30th August 2014 and condemns the imposition of Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code and deployment of counter insurgency forces; Manipur Police Commando (MPC) and Indian Reserved Battalion (IRB) in Ukhrul without any justification since the 13th of July 2014

NISC urges the Government of India to immediately live up to the ceasefire agreement of 1997 and to stop the Government of Manipur  from violating rights and lives  of the Naga Peoples.

UNC seeks ‘urgent action and intervention’ of the Prime Minister of India

Senapati, August 30 (MExN): The United Naga Council (UNC) has called for “urgent action and intervention” from the Government of India in a memorandum to its Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.

The action and intervention has been sought from the GoI to “expedite an acceptable and honourable settlement of the Indo-Naga issue.” It asked for the Government of Manipur to be “prevailed upon” by the Union “to uphold and respect the Indo-Naga cease-fire and peace process which recognises the unique history and situation of the Nagas and to immediately desist from militarisation of Naga areas.”

The UNC memorandum also asked the GoI to “ensure that the GoM is not allowed to subvert the constitutional rights and protections of the tribals and Nagas in all spheres – educational, employment, ownership of land and natural resources, development opportunities etc.”

“The GoI must take forward with sincerity and seriousness the democratic process of dialogue in the tripartite talk of the GoI, GoM and UNC on the demand of the Nagas in Manipur for an alternative arrangement outside the GoM, pending settlement of the Indo-Naga issue, which has logically progressed to a stage where the GoI will institute a High Powered Committee to translate the same into a political reality,” the memo stated. Apart from the UNC, it was endorsed by the Naga Peoples’ Organisation, Maram Naga Union, Thangal Union, Mao Council, Poumai Naga Union, Senapati District Women’s Association, Senapati District Students’ Association, Naga Peoples’ Movement for Human Rights, All Naga Students’ Association Manipur and Zeliangrong Senapati Zone.

Condolence to Ramkashing and Mayopam
Raise up for a peaceful world order against repressive regime

This day, 30th August 2014, will be another day to be remembered in red ink in the history of the politics of dissent and violent suppression. Ukhrul have lost two of its dearest soul and many have been injured while raising up for a human cause. In this regard, the Manipur Student’s Association Delhi raises the banner of justice and;

  1. Condole the killing of RamkashingVashi (s/o L. Christopher Vashi of Teinem Village, Ukhrul), and R. Mayopam (s/o L.R. Hangyui of Teinem Village, Ukhrul) in the course of police action to suppress the mass demonstration in Ukhrul today (30th August 2014) that was organized under the aegis of the United Naga Council. May their soul rest in peace and we express our heartfelt grievances to the loss with the family, relatives, friends and dear ones.
  2. Condemn the brutal repression that had to led to the casualty of AS. Pamshang of Ukhrul Town, Chanreiwon of Teinem Village, Khanreingam LK (S/o Yangmi LK of Leiting Village), L. Somiwon of Shirui, NingkhanLuikham (S/o David Luikham of Kongkan Village), RamchanngamHoram (S/o HelpsonHoram of Kharasom Village), ShangkahaoKeishing (S/o (L) Thomas Keishing of Thoyee Village), SK. Raingam of Kachai and many others.

Having observed the law and order situation in Ukhrul over the last few weeks, we have come up with the following observations, that;

  1. The scheduled mass protest was well planned and the administration was formally or informally aware of it. The mass demonstration was politically motivated and it was carried out in the context of the pent up resentment against the imposition of the Criminal Procedure Code Section 144 and the subsequent deployment of commandoes and IRBs, since 13th July 2014, which have been done as a response to the killing of Mr. NgalangzarMalue, an Autonomous District Council member of Ukhrul District by unidentified gunmen on 12 of July 2014.
  2. If the government have been committed to the peace and democracy of people; between 13th July and 30th August, there have been considerable time for it to come up with some practical political initiatives towards peaceful understanding with the people of Ukhrul. It seems to us that there have been lack of initiatives towards a workable peace process. Unfortunately, the government have followed its usual practice of militarization and repression of the voice of dissent.
  3. Therefore, what was happened today, was the repetition of ‘State Terrorism’ that have been systematically carried out without restraint for the last many years in the Imphal Valley and many other areas.
  4. This particular trend of governance is undemocratic and inhuman.

We, therefore;

  1. Strongly condemn the government for its failure to peacefully handle with the tense situation in Ukhrul.
  2. Express our suspicion about any hidden agenda of the Government to ignite social tension as a safety valve to divert away the attention of the people from certain genuine larger democratic issues that the government had failed to address to.
  3.  Appeal the progressive civil societies in Manipur and beyond to collectively fight against State terrorism in any form under any pretext.

PRESS RELEASE

 Date: 29.08.2014

NEFIS STRONGLY CONDEMNS THE RE-ARRESTING OF IROM SHARMILA!

A TEAM OF POLICEWOMEN DRAG THE ACTIVIST AMIDST SCREAMING WEEPING SUPPORTERS!!

NEFIS(North East Forum for International Solidarity) strongly condemns the rearresting of Irom Sharmila last week just two days after a court ruled that she cannot be charged with attempted suicide for refusing food and water. A team of policewomen dragged the frail activist away from the tin shack that is the site of her protest. We would also like to condemn the Deputy Chief Minister of Manipur who defended the rearresting of Irom Sharmila by saying that the activist’s health was deteriorating. The truth is Irom was grabbed fiercly, dragged and thrown to the Police vehicle by a group of Police women. This is gross violation of human rights and huge disrespect to an activist who has been struggling to end violence and bring peace in the whole north east region of the country.People of Manipur across India are enraged with this blatant offence against a women and an activist who is fighting for ending the brutal law of AFSPA.

The activist is continuing her 14-year hunger strike but says it is not a fast unto death. She says she will fast till the Armed Forces Special Powers Act or AFSPA is removed from Manipur. The law gives soldiers sweeping powers to arrest or interrogate people in “disturbed areas” or states dealing with separatists or insurgents. Sharmila began her fast in November 2000, days after 10 people, including two children, were shot dead in Imphal, by Assam Rifles soldiers. Three days later, she was charged with attempt to suicide and arrested. On 22nd May, 1958, AFSPA law was promulgated for the first time by the Indian state. By denying us the right to rule of law the Indian state has kept us relegated to the status of second class citizens in the country that claims itself to be the world’s largest democracy. Indian ‘nationalists’ love to look across the border and gleefully compare the virtues of their parliamentary democracy with the succession of military juntas that have ruled over Pakistan through most of its post-independence history. Declarations of the committee appointed by the Supreme Court in April 2013 that fake encounters happened in Manipur merely affirmed facts that we have all known for very long.

We demand the immediate release of Irom Sharmila and revoking of Armed Forces Special Power Act(AFSPA).
