JOINT PRESS RELEASE

Students and activists participate in a candle light vigil against the extremeties by Israeli state in Palestine

More than 200 students and activists under the banner of NEFIS (North East Forum for International Solidarity) and KYS (Krantikari Yuva Sangathan) participated in a candle light vigil yesterday 25th August against the extremeties of Israeli state in Gaza. Students and activists assembled in Arts Faculty, North Campus and carried out a candle light vigil from Arts Faculty to Vishwavidyalay metro station. North campus echoed with slogans like ‘No more blood for oil’, ’US imperialism Down! Down!’.

The war on Palestine however is not the most horrifying for the attack on unarmed civilians by one of the world’s most sophisticated armies. Much of its horror lies in the silence that most of the world’s governments have maintained while watching this bloodbath unfold, complicit in the massacre of the Palestinians in their flourishing relations with Israel and their subservience to various extents to the American imperialism that fuels it. The Zionist purging of Arabs from the Palestinian lands has throughout been supported and in fact abetted by the imperialist powers. The US has been pumping in millions of dollars as aid to fund Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land and the slaughtering of its population.

Among others, India maintains particularly close economic and diplomatic ties with Israel. In fact while Indian foreign policy on the Israel-Palestine conflict has over the past few decades taken a decisive turn in the favour of Israel, the coming into power of the Hindu right in India has further strengthened the ideological affinity between the ruling powers of both the countries. Further, this affinity stands on the firm ground of dense economic exchange. Besides trade in other goods, India is the biggest importer of armaments from Israel, contributing to one of Israel’s most important industries while Israel is the largest buyer of diamonds polished in India.

Despite the evident disparity in all manners of resources and strength with their adversary, the Palestinian people continue to fight the occupation with remarkable courage. The only thing that stands with them besides their courage is the solidarity that their struggle has received from people across the world. It is for us to fight beside them, mounting pressure on Israel and the Indian government which offers it tacit support, the primacy the government gives to arms over minimal social security, its repression and butchery of its own people so on and so forth.

A two day documentary film workshop was organised by Prodigal Ministry at Tamei, Tamenlong district under the sponsorship of TRI (Tribal Research Institute) Imphal from 14th to 15th August 2014.

The workshop was conducted by award winning filmmaker Oinam Doren and A. Bikeshwor Sharma, an FTII graduate in digital cinematography. 73 participants took part in the intense interactive sessions combine with film screenings. Dee Abonmai, the General Secretary of Prodigal Ministry said that the workshop was organised with the objective of developing the local filmmaking talents of the Liangmai community. He himself has produced more than 9 films but often felt handicapped due to lack of professional training.

Tamei which is located 118 Kms from Imphal has one of the worst road connectivity and mobile network in the state. Inspite of belonging to a small community and presence of any theatre in Tamei town, the Liangmai film enthusiasts continue to make films that are distributed only through DVDs. while profits are never a part of any film venture, they felt the need to tell their stories to a larger world. The film workshop which was being conducted for the first time in the town closed with the screening of acclaimed feature film from Mizoram ‘Khwanglung run’ set in 1860’s in the Lushai Hills which experience the tragic attack on Khwanglung village.

Club Muzik’s ARTISIA – voice of the stars

Interview with ReCycle

Based in Imphal this alternative band is regarded as the most successful of today’s rock music scene in Manipur. With soft vocals and clean instrumental sounds they represent among the true sons of the soil. Young or old, a great band to listen to.

Recycle Music Band

Recycle Music Band

Recycle Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/recycleimphal

Club Muzik:The making of Recycle?

ReCycle:ReCycle came into existence in November 2006 with a common urge to bring the musical landscapes of 90’s grunge, Alternative and funk flavor to the Imphal music scene.

Club Muzik:What do you want to see in a fan, say Recycle fan?

ReCycle:We would love to see in our fan who could connect to the band musically, love for who we are & stay loyal to the journeys ahead.

Club Muzik:Your music is a contrary to the current aggressive nature of metal bands in the country. But rightfully we feel that Recycle has made a place of it’s own apart from the various trending bands. Share us how a band can achieve such an honor?

ReCycle:ReCycle is an alternative rock band with a touch of funk element to our sound. We do have a core belief in our band. We stay true to our music with dedication, devotion and action which help us in the long run.

Recycle Music Band

Club Muzik:Every musician has the slightest difference or perfect uniqueness in it’s music no matter how similar they sound like. What is it in Recycle the rest don’t create?

ReCycle:Every band has its own style of music, taste & approach. We do have our kind of music which we can call our own but we can’t comment or compare with the rest and the interpretation is left to the listeners.

Club Muzik:How do you differentiate a rock artist like yourself from a Hindustani artist in the local scene?

ReCycle:Hindustani artist are like they are into mainstream culture where as we are part of the sub-culture which is not too mainstream.

Club Muzik:Apart from Recycle what all are your favorites in music?

ReCycle:We are all inspired by The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix,RHCP,Incubus,Coldplayjust to name a few & we do love the local acts like The Imphal Talkies,The Dirty Strikes,The Koi.

Recycle Music Band – EP

Club Muzik:In a music making industry the production quality matters a lot to come up with a good and well-crafted sound. Tell us what you would suggest to other musicians in Manipur to come up with quality production?

ReCycle:We would love to suggest a good recording studio along with a sound engineer who can communicate, co-operate and work with the kind of approach your band would like to have and expect him to help technically in the recording process in order to get the right source to maintain quality production. The recording process is what matter and should be the prime focus in order to get the right kind of sound so the source from the guitar amps, microphone positioning & stuffs needs to be check. So, once the recording process is done with proper care you can do the mixing & mastering anywhere depending upon your budget.

Club Muzik:How do you write your music and lyrics?

ReCycle:All our music and lyrics comes spontaneously. Sometimes a bass line would come up or a guitar phrase while we are jamming or during rehearsal before a gig and the idea turns into a song. It all comes naturally but it’s not actually plan and sometimes the lyric comes all of a sudden so we just write it down.

Club Muzik:How do you maintain your music instruments to keep it in good shape at home or for a liveshow?

ReCycle:Just keep in hard case in case we are going for live show. We do have sentimental value to our instruments so we just take good care and maintain to keep in good way.

Club Muzik:What are your expectations while playing at a live gig?

ReCycle:We do expect good quality production like sound, lights and stage from the organizer. We always try to connect new fans while playing at a live gig and we are grateful that most of the gigs we played are paid so far.

Club Muzik:Share us the people behind each members of Recycle who made you all into music, like who allsupported or trained you in the beginning?

ReCycle:All of us are self-taught and we didn’t had formal training from early on. We are inspired from our elders from early age to get into music and we thank our elders, families and friends for all their continued support and guidance.

Club Muzik:To you what is perfect timing for a band?

ReCycle: We do exist like a family and we are all aware of the highs and the lows of the band so far. We always enjoy the moment of the journey through this band and the perfect timing would be like when we all function like a collective soul or together as one unit.

Club Muzik:The busiest person in Manipur is……………………..? (Fill in the blank.)

ReCycle:God knows.!

SSSC CONDEMNS IROM SHARMILA’S RE-ARREST

PRESS RELEASE

SSSC CONDEMNS IROM SHARMILA’S RE-ARREST

Save Sharmila Solidarity Campaign (SSSC) is a nation-wide campaign in support of Irom Sharmila and for the repeal of the draconian law of AFSPA. For three years now, it has been working to spread awareness, mobilise support and generate political pressure to repeal the law. In this regard, it has organised awareness campaigns, public demonstrations, two nation-wide awareness rallies, nation-wide signature campaign, met NHRC chairperson, written letters to PMO, the President and other authorities etc. It is an umbrella of many civil society organisations.

On 19th August, Imphal Court in its humane judgement had ordered to release Irom Sharmila as it stated that “no supportive evidence of attempted suicide” was found. But today, the Manipur police had forcibly re-arrested her.

SSSC condemns this re-arrest. Ravi Nitesh, core member of SSSC remarked, “The arrest of Irom Sharmila is shameful and undemocratic. Instead of focusing on her demand, her issue, the Government is only responding by arresting her. It is shameful that in these 14 years, the “concerned” Govt. of both state and centre have not made a single attempt to open talks with her.” “The Govt. must also know that by arresting her, they cannot suppress her thoughts, her ideology,” he added.

Pankaj Pathak core member of SSSC stated, “She is being arrested on the claim of attempting suicide while she has always refuted this claim. She has re-iterated several times that she loves her life and is only demanding rights, equality and justice for everyone. Why doesn’t the Govt focus on the reason, on her statement?”

Devika Mittal, core member of SSSC, said, “It is shameful that that they can only see her as a law offender but not as a victim. It is shameful that in this democracy, the victim is imprisoned instead of the culprit. AFSPA is the culprit and this has been established by Govt-appointed committees, national and international human rights’ organizations and even judiciary. ”

SSSC believes that AFSPA must be repealed as an immediate measure. It should be noted that even government’s own committees have recommended the measures to do the same. The continuous violation must need to stop. Also, Government must come forward to express its ‘willing’ attitude of resolving the problem rather than ignoring the peaceful and non violent struggle of Irom Sharmila. SSSC considers Irom Sharmila as its leader and will always stand for her support for the very cause of truth, justice, humanity and peace. At the same time, SSSC demands with the government to remove the case of ‘attempt to suicide’ from her and to make her free to communicate with her supporters. Until the demands will be fulfilled, the struggle and demonstrations will continue.

New Delhi, August 19, 2014: Fragrance of the North-eastern films to traverse through the National Capital – Delhi! This is an opportunity for Delhiites to get as close as possible to North-East India later this month, without stepping out of the national capital. The Directorate of Film Festivals (DFF) is organizing “Fragrances from the North East”, a three-day festival of cinema from the region in a freshly-refurbished Siri Fort Auditorium complex.

Giving an absolute North-Eastern experience to the visitors, the film screenings will be supplemented by cultural programmes, handicraft exhibitions, food stalls and much more during the festival that will take place during August 22-24.

To be inaugurated on August 22 by the Hon’ble Minister for Information & Broadcasting Shri Prakash Javadekar, the festival will be attended by several leading film personalities from the region, including internationally-acclaimed filmmakers Jahnu Barua and Aribam Syam Sharma, and actors Danny Dengzongpa, Seema Biswas, Adil Hussain, Geetanjali Thapa and many more.

Mr. Shankar Mohan, Director, Directorate of Film Festivals said, “I invite all likeminded of people of Delhi, particularly the young to come and experience the three day North East Film Festival -”Fragrances from the North East” happening  at Sirifort complex from the 22nd to the 24th August. These fragrances from the NE are wafting into the Capital city after many years.”

“Come and enjoy the food, films and handicraft of the North East. A window to the North East opens in Sirifort Complex on 22nd August, don’t miss this opportunity to experience, feel and enjoy the fragrances wafting through this Capital city.” Mr. Mohan further added.

The festival will begin with the screening of Mizo feature film “Khawnglung Run” (The Raid of Khawnglung) which is directed & produced by Mapuia Chongthu within a miniscule budget of Rs 12 lakh. This film won many hearts with its visual panache when it was screened as part of the ‘North-East Focus’ section of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa last year.

The screening will be preceded by a cultural show designed especially for the event by the highly popular singer-composer PAPON, which will take the audience on a musical journey of the region.

The festival also include two National Award winning films of this year: Jahnu Barua’s “Ajeyo” (Assamese) and Pradip Kurbah’s “Ri: A Homeland of Uncertainty” (Khasi, Meghalaya).

Representing Sikkim would be Prashant Rasaily’s Gurkhali film “Katha”, while Manipur, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh will be represented by Oinam Gautam Singh’s Manipuri language film “Phijigee Mani”, Joseph Pulinthanath’s Kokborok language film “Yarwng” and Ahsan Mujid’s Monpa language film “Sonam” respectively.

From Nagaland, a short film titled “Bamboo Shoots” directed by Steven Ao and a documentary titled “Going the Distance” directed by Tiainla Jamir will be screened. Kurbah’s “RI” will be the closing film of the festival and its screening on August 24 will be preceded by a cultural event that will see classical pianist Nise Meruno’s performance of Naga folk fusion and choir group Nagaland Singing Ambassadors’ rendition of Naga folk-based choir.

The 123rd Patriot’s Day celebration was held on the 17th of Aug 2014 in Bengaluru. Though 13th Aug is the actual Patriot’s Day, MMAB and BMSA organized this event on a Sunday to gather maximum crowd participation. The celebration was held at the Karnataka Hockey Association’s premises. Dr W Budhendra, Shree T L Singha and Shree Basanth Singha presided over as the Chief Guest, President and the guest of honor respectively. The day commenced with an opening song presented by MMAB and BMSA. This was followed by floral tribute to the Patriot’s. 123 years ago the mighty British sentenced Yuvaraj Bir Tikendrajit, Thangal General and Paona Brajabasi to be hanged till death. This was after they defeated the Meitei’s in the Anglo Manipuri war of 1891. The theme of the painting competition for children was Patriotism. It was a sight to watch the kids paint their imagination. One of them, the eventual winner, painted a portrait of Bir Tikendrajit. This was followed by the recitation competition and the symposium on “patriotism in IT era”. Many came up to recite their poetries and many spoke on the symposium topic.

For the first time in the history of the North American Manipur Association (NAMA), the annual convention was held at California. This was the 23rd Convention and the event was hosted by the San Francisco Bay Area members at Thockchom’s residence on the 4th and 5th of July, 2014. More than seventy five members including children across North America attended the gathering. The celebration of Manipuri culture, exhibited through dance, food, artifacts and language, filled people’s hearts with the memories of Manipur besides building relationship and bonding amongst all members who were meeting for the first time. The convention clearly demonstrated the commitment that NAMA members have to sustain and strengthen the organization. This year messages were received from Korea Manipuri Association (KMA), Director and Students from Manipur Institute of Management Studies (MIMS), Dynamic Manipur (DM), Jeremiah Pame for the support NAMA provided on The Halflong Tamenlong Road Construction and Ragesh Keisham, CMD, The SuiGeneris Inc.

July 4th, 2014: Reception at Thockchom residence

The first day of the convention began with several members for a seven hour long tour of the San Francisco City. The bus had two pick up points and was fully packed when it headed for San Francisco City. After a joyful trolley ride, the team headed to Fisherman’s Wharf. Right after lunch, the group headed for the Golden Gate Bridge from where they started their return journey to the host’s residence. In the evening, the host’s residence was packed with all members joining us for the evening event. The potluck dinner was a grand success with all the NAMA families of the San Francisco Bay area bringing a dish to add to the menu. The sumptuous food of the evening cooked by the Ningols included – Ooti with ushoi (Steamed White peas cooked with sodium bicarb and fresh bamboo shoot), Yen-Thongba (Chicken curry), Shingju, Nga Thongba (Fish curry), Shoibum Iromba (Steamed fermented bamboo shoots with potato). Post dinner an impromptu music session kicked off several members playing the guitar and the host playing a special African style drum – ‘Djembe’. The night was young and everyone had a fantastic time of knowing one another. The bonfire set up was just right to keep us warm. Children were seen roasting marshmallows and having fun.

July 5th, 2014: Main Event: Backyard of Thockchom residence

Morning Session: The tent was just the right size to fit the members who had gathered on that bright sunny morning at Fremont, California. Members started arriving at 9:30 AM. The reception at the entrance was busy with members registering for the event. Breakfast of assorted fruits and muffins were laid out near the entrance along with Starbucks coffee sponsored by Khuraijam family. The anchor of the day Bonny Sharma hailing from New Jersey opened the event by welcoming all members and kicking off the NAMA General Body Meeting. The event began with a short welcome note from the host of the convention, Gautam Thockchom. He expressed his gratitude to all the Bay Area members for their support and participation. In his welcome speech, NAMA President Amom Ruhikant Meetei called upon all NAMA members to come forward and support in several activities hosted by NAMA. He said “Migi Mama Mashak Phajabiduda Ima Kouruba Yaroi, Mashak Thijarabashu, Phimal Shetcharabashu, Ima Leibak Manipur-di Keidounungda Kaothokpiganu” (One cannot claim a beautiful woman as his mother; even if she is poor and not as beautiful, do not ever forget your motherland Manipur). In order to bring the patriotic feeling to the audience he closed his speech with the song ‘Ho Ima Poknapham Ima Nangumbi Leite Ima koina Thiduna Lapna Chatuna Nangumbi Phangloi Ima’ (O-Mother, my motherland there is no one like you. Wherever I go, I will not find someone like you).

One of the founding members of NAMA, Dr. A. Surjalal Sharma from Maryland came online via google hangout. The session was supported and moderated by IT Team – Sagar Sharma from Charlotte, North Carolina. Dr. Surjalal gave an overview of NAMA in general and highlighted the changing times and generations. He mentioned that NAMA needs to evolve so that it is relevant to the new generations and work on inclusiveness of all members from different communities of Manipur. He also emphasized on maintaining proper records of Executive proceedings. In the same google hangout session, former Treasurer of NAMA, Moirangthem Ongbi Elangbam Ningol Sarita from Houston, Texas thanked the current Executive team for their dedication and commitment and for taking the Convention to the West Coast. She called upon all Ningols residing in North America to work on a project called ‘Cha Cup Ama-tang Thakmin-nashi’ – ‘Let’s have a cup of tea together’. The main theme behind this project is for the Ningols to share their learnings of settling down in America and raising their children in Manipuri ways. This project will help any new families who are joining the NAMA family in future. The yearly report of NAMA activities was presented by General Secretary Hori Singha. The main events in the last one year being the various festivals, endorsements of two events in Manipur and hosting of several Manipuris in New York. He also mentioned about the New Year gift that was sent to all members. He also gave an overall history of how NAMA started and called for members to support in the ongoing activities of NAMA. The yearly financial report was presented by Treasurer, Lily Sharma. A short video of NAMA accomplishments till date was also shown. It was followed by several video messages from organizations with whom NAMA has joined hands. Lunch was served at noon with assorted pizzas. The children were having fun with the bouncy castles that was set up for the whole day.

Afternoon Session: The session kicked off with the member introduction. The bonding and the love was pouring out with many members expressing their delight to be at the event. The first debate of the event was on the theme “Discussion on ideas for new initiatives/activities” The debate on what NAMA can do to help Manipur and the people of Manipur, it lasted for more than one hour. Gautam Thockchom who was playing the Devil’s advocate, putting forward thought provoking questions to the audience. The highly interactive discussion elucidated the various challenges and issues facing Manipur. The NAMA members identified opportunities for improvement in Manipur and also discussed the potential steps that can be taken to bring about meaningful changes in the state. Some of the areas that were considered worthy of development include, but are not limited to, education, the IT sector, and entrepreneurship. It was agreed that NAMA will be revamping the official NAMA website by adding resourceful links and documents related to visas, careers, and education for the people of Manipur to access. NAMA is also actively planning on how best it can provide monetary assistance in various endeavors in Manipur. In collaboration with the residents of Manipur, NAMA plans to analyze the strengths of the state and execute appropriate actions for its development. The highly engaged debate was participated by Roshan Ngangom, Vimol Kshetrimayum, Chanam Kulabidhu, Niang Hangzo, Hori Singha, Amom Ruhikant, Rima, Sandeep and several other members. Due to shortage of time, the second debate on what NAMA should do for members was put on hold for a discussion after the Convention.

After a short tea break, the afternoon session resumed in a round table set up. Members gathered to hear Senior NAMA member Mrs. Advanimayum Ongbi Maibam Ningol Jamuna’s introduction to her new book The Letter: A Memoir – a book that narrates the journey of her life. Mrs. Jamuna Advani also gave an overview of the Meitei / Meetei Mayek, the Manipuri language on how she learnt to write from a book she recently got during her trip to Manipur. It was a tough task but she said she can now read and write the alphabet which was highly encouraging. The intellectual discussion was then followed by jokes from Premjeet Sougrakpamcha who is known for his naturally amusing personality and filled the atmosphere with joy and laughter.

To close the formal event, Shilpa Phairembam, Assistant General Secretary of NAMA, delivered the Vote of Thanks on behalf of the NAMA executive team. Shilpa extended special thanks to Thockchom family and Khuraijam family for their support throughout including the initial planning of this special Convention where Eventbrite and early registration process was introduced for the first time. She  thanked all the San Francisco Bay area families and members for their hospitality and care during the entire event. She expressed gratitude to all the members who have come from across North America who graced the occasion, making the event and the trip to San Francisco an unforgettable experience.

The evening was drawing in fast. All the members gathered for a quick group photo session – one that will remain as a memory for many years to come. Right after that Sudeep Khuraijam, NAMA Area Representative (California) who has been running around engaging the members for the special ‘Iron Chef Competition’ kicked off the competition. Members were grouped by numbers and the Starter items of Shingju (Manipuri style mix vegetable salad), Kelichana (Steamed white peas stirfried in Indian spices) and Chana Kanghou (Steamed black chickpea stirfried in Indian spices) were prepared by three different groups at a set time. Another group got busy with the main course items which included Iromba, Yen Thongba, Makan Ngouba, Nga Thongba, Hawai Thongba. Parents of NAMA members of Ngangom family and Aribam family were the judges for the competition. While the competition was in progress, Noopur Singha, the talented dancer from Washington DC was engaged in a Manipuri dance workshop with few children. Later in the day, to our surprise, it turned out that the Nga Thongba and Hawai Thongba tied in terms of taste which was the most amusing result of the evening. Roshan Ngangom’s makan thongba and Jonathan Zingkhai’s pork curry with bamboo shoots was a big hit for the evening.

As the sun was setting on the western side of Mission Peak, Fremont, it was just the right time and the right amount of light for Noopur to perform her Krishna Natan dance. For a moment everyone felt that the event went into a Ras Lila dance session in the heart of Imphal. The glittering costumes and swift movements including the music were simply mesmerizing for the audience. In between Prety Amom sang a beautiful cover of the song ‘Someone Like You’. Her sweet voice left the audience enthralled adding more colors to the sunset. As if it was not enough, Noopur performed Thougal Jagoi which again left the audience speechless. She then led a team of Ningols in a traditional Leima Jagoi. She also showed few steps of what she taught the children during the workshop. Immediately after that, the much awaited Thabal Chongba (meaning dancing in the moonlight) continued. The beautiful ladies started with Gautam  Thockchom and Dhaneshwar Laishram on drums. Men and women, boys and girls clutched each other’s hands and danced in a circle to the rhythm of the drum while the sun was setting and the flood lights were put on as darkness was setting in. The dance continued until everyone was very exhausted. The laughter, the cheer, the excitement was indescribable and that is what the members believe the Annual Convention is all about.

Families and Individuals from Cities or States who attended the Convention:  New Jersey, Virgina, Maryland, Houston (Texas), Irvine (California), Los Angeles (California), Missouri, Cincinnati (Ohio), Chicago (Illinois) and various suburbs of San Francisco Bay Area.

Bangladesh sending its death squads for the UN Peacekeeping missions

– BGB being denied UN postings while India’s BSF personnel serve with various UN Missions –

New Delhi: Asian Centre for Human Rights in its report, “BANGLADESH: SENDING DEATH SQUADS TO KEEP THE UN’s PEACE”
(http://www.achrweb.org/reports/DPKO-Bangladesh.pdf), the first ever comprehensive study on the issue released today to coincide with the ongoing visit of United Nations under secretary general for department of peacekeeping operations (DPKO) Hervé Ladsous to Bangladesh from 22 July 2014 stated that Bangladesh is sending its death squads to keep peace for the United Nations.

The troops which are being sent for UN peacekeeping missions include the Bangladesh Army personnel who are posted in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHTs) and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), which has been declared as ineligible to receive technical assistance from the United States under the Leahy Law because of its personnel being involved in gross human rights violations with impunity.  Between 2004 and 2011, the Bangladesh Army personnel were responsible for 15 cases of extrajudicial killings,
464 cases of arbitrary arrest, 374 cases of torture and 285 cases of forcible evictions in addition to burning down of 1,070 houses of indigenous Jumma peoples of the CHTs. Bangladesh Army personnel also murdered at least 70 suspects of 2009 Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) mutiny at Pilkhana in their custody while the RAB which had 83 Army officers out of the 208 officers as of August 2013 were responsible for extra-judicial executions of 776 persons in alleged cross fire between January 2004 and June 2013. A large number of these human rights violators have been posted with the UN peace keeping missions.

bangladesh map

“The cross-fire is a blatant cover up of the extra-judicial executions by the RAB. Since its inception in 2004, not a single death has been due to innumerable crossfire incidents, which supposedly involve cross-firing with criminal gangs and terrorist groups. About 18 RAB personnel were killed in the Pilkhana massacre and the rest died in road accidents.” – stated Mr Suhas Chakma, Director of Asian Centre for Human Rights.

Serving in a UN peacekeeping mission is deemed so lucrative [as a Bangladesh Army officer earn upwards of US $2,200 a month in addition to other allowances and parks for an officer against Taka 15,000 (about US $200) for an officer in the country and US $1,100 for a soldier, against Taka 7,717 (about US $100)] that Bangladesh Army has systematically monopolised the UN postings. Bangladesh Army constitutes 93% of the peacekeepers deployed from Bangladesh while the remaining 7% are from Bangladesh Police, Navy and Air Force personnel.

In fact, the denial of opportunities to serve with the UN missions was one of the main reasons for the revolt by the BDR personnel at Pilkhana, Dhaka on 25 February 2009 in which a total of 74 persons including 57 Army Officers deputed to the BDR from the army were massacred. The 10-member Investigation Committee formed by the Government of Bangladesh instead of resolving the grudge of the BDR personnel purposely misled the country by stating that the “United Nations has objected to the proposal of BDR
members being taken to foreign missions.  Bangladesh Government has no jurisdiction in this matter”.

“This is another blatant lie as India’s Border Security Force personnel who are equivalent of the BDR in Bangladesh are regularly deployed for UN Missions and have previously served in Namibia, Cambodia, Mozambique, Angola, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Haiti. That Bangladesh refuses to include the BDR personnel, rechristened as Border Guards Bangladesh, despite a national tragedy like Pilkhana massacre shows the vested interest of the Bangladesh Army to monopolise the UN postings.” – further stated Mr
Chakma.

About 7% of the Bangladesh Army constantly remain deployed in UN Peacekeeping missions at any given point of time and the UN has been steadily contributing to increasing militarisation in the country and extending the grip of the Army on the country. Bangladesh increased its defence budget by over 11% for the Financial Year 2011-12, among others, to purchase 44 new Main Battle Tanks, three Armoured Recovery Vehicles and two brand new helicopters for the army from China to provide logistical
support allegedly for UN peacekeeping missions.

As a number of human rights violators from Bangladesh have been posted with the UN peacekeeping missions, Asian Centre for Human Rights called upon the United Nations to strictly implement “Human Rights Screening of United Nations Personnel Policy” of December 2012 to bar deployment of such violators.

MURDERERS STILL TO BE ARRESTED!

STUDENTS AND WORKING PEOPLE OF NORHT EAST

COMMUNITIES ENRAGED OVER THE NEGLIGENCE SHOWN BY

A BPO worker from North East region of the country was brutally murdered by six rowdy goons in Kotla Mubarakpur area of South Delhi. The goons are still to be arrested. Students and working people of North East communities are enraged over the negligence shown by the Delhi Police. It is to be noted that only after the massive protest by north east students spearheaded by North East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) police registered an FIR. Due to the pressure made by North East community in Delhi and gherao of the Kotla Mubarakpur police station, MoS Home Affairs Kiren Rejiju was forced to come to the police station.

It can be noted that last night a gang of 6 rowdy goons attacked Shaloni, a BPO worker from Senapati district, Manipur after quarrel over racial remarks made by goons. He was beaten to death, and the murderers ran off in a white car. The onlookers remained mum and apathetic towards him. Even the beat official was absent in a crowded and crime prone area like Kotla Mubarakpur. Local residents found his body lying on road and soon after called up the police. Police came late and then he was rushed to the near by hospital where his body was declared dead. Till late noon police refused to register even an FIR and body was kept in trauma center AIIMS mortuary without post mortem till 4 pm. Negligence on part of police in dealing up the serious cases like this leads to loss of valuable time in investigation.

This incident is not the first one. We can not forget the brutal murder of Nido Tania. Racism against North East people in Delhi is not new and racial attacks are continuing. Government of India and Delhi Police are not learning from their earlier mistakes. We can see the negligence even after many lives have been lost. Police should take immediate action. If police remained neglect, NEFIS will not remain silent. NEFIS, along with other North Eastern organizations and democratic-progressive people of Delhi, will call up a massive protest if all the culprits are not arrested within 24 hours.

Ivalley Talks – Looking for Inspiration and Ideas

Ivalley

Concept and Vision

At times, the heart does things for reasons which reason cannot understand. And the “I” in every person carefully crafts to intertwine ideas which inspire the rationale and our heart’s desires to form the sublimed Individual. From the common man to a terrorist, the truth is always different for what is true to you could be not true to another. But on another level, both the common man and the terrorist have an idea of their own truth. Adolf Hitler was a man who believed in his idea of truth whereby truth to him was love and pride for the Germans and to create a Utopia. Even though his methodology was harsh, he had followers because he had an idea so great which inspired many Germans. So what is an Idea? A concept, thought, opinion, theory; intention, plan, goal; impression; vague supposition. . . From the smallest ones of an idea of a child to steal a cookie to big ones of suppose, creating a piece of art, the idea of the child stealing the cookie may be in such an unequaled unrivaled manner which inspires. Ivalley talk is a platform which will provide the child a chance to share.

What is Ivalley talks?

Ivalley talks is an independently organized talk event . The goal of the event is to bring together bright minds to give talks that are Idea-focused, and on a wide range of subjects ,to foster learning , inspiration and wonder- and provoke conversation that matters. This event will be host twice annually throughout Northeast , to spread ideas of Northeast around the Globe. Its a long-term project please join us in this visionary Project.

She described how in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Nepal, women are the victims of rape, abduction, child marriages, female infanticide, acid attacks, dowry-related murders, honor killing and enslavement. She furthermore criticized that many South Asian conflicts, such as that in Northeast India, Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh, are left unreported by mass media. She also mentioned the ongoing armed violence caused by small arms, light weapons within the Northeast India region. More than 50,000 lives have been lost in the violence.   The conflict in Manipur turns 300 women into widows annually. Ms. Maria Butler, Programme Director, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, PeaceWomen Project, USA,focused on the need for a shift in CSW from military to human security and the links between development and militarism, identifying however a huge resistance as to imbedding disarmament in the development agenda. She accentuated how the post-2015 development agenda cannot keep silent on militarism if we want human rights abuses to be truly addressed. She also referred to the earlier-mentioned India’s resistance to apply Resolution 1325, calling this ‘the core of the challenge’ of their work, calling for voices that acknowledge that aforesaid resolution is in fact applicable everywhere.

Ms. Sarah Boyd, Founder, The Gender Agency, Australia, underlined the importance of women’s voices going from the private to the public sphere, merging private and public spheres to raise women’s consciousness, collective investment in ensuring that CSW nor the post-2015 agenda remain silent on critical issues of gender equality, peace (keeping), development, disarmament and their intersections, and the importance of CSO’s as the ties that bind the foregoing elements.

Ms. Fiona McAlpine, Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network/Young WILPF Network, Australia, addressed the issues of murder and forced disappearance of women and girls in India and the lack of access to justice, forged evidence and post-mortem reports, and impunity (as a consequence of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act) in that context. She accentuated that without including disarmament and demilitarization, the CSW is moot, as there can be no development without disarmament, which is also a prerequisite for access to justice.

Also a short film titled, “We Shall Find Our Peace” was screened at the event that depicts the hardships and sufferings happening due to the ongoing conflict situation in the state of Manipur, India and eagerness of the population to promote peaceful environment in the region. The film showed the strength and hope among the Manipuri Women to overcome the hardships and violence in their state.

There were valuable discussions among the panelists and other participants across India, USA, Brazil, Australia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and many others on Women, Peace and Security, types of violence and discrimination they are facing across the globe. Further discussions were on the possible steps that could be taken for the empowerment of women, their role in conflict transformation, disarmament, and decision-making processes.
