Asking and Demanding our Ministers to Take an Urgent Decision to Include Manipuri Muslim Pictures in Theme and Stalls in Sangai Festival – 2013

DO. No.: MMOF/PR/SangaiFestival/2013
Dated: 17th November, 2013

Manipuri Muslims, locally known as Meitei-Pangals, are inherent fabric of the diversity that Manipuri society represents. We have a history of more than 400 years in this land and have been part of turbulent times and harmonious existence that comprise the glorious past of this “Jewel of India”.

Some of the prominent Muslims had highly recognizable contribution in sports, economic, social and political sphere of Manipuri society. Sangai Festival is mirror to Manipur’s socio-cultural and socio-economic landscape. Manipuri Muslims Online Forum request the responsible authority to include stalls representing the culture and social life of Manipuri Muslims in the coming edition of Sangai festival.

The stall will strengthen the identity of this backward community and integrity of Manipuri society. An urgent decision in this regard should be taken by the Department of Art and Culture and the minister and MLAs from Muslim community.

Ningol Chakaoba in Bangalore: A melting pot of diverse ethnic group:

A small Ningol Chakauba event organized by a group of enthusiastic Meities in Bangalore successfully marked the seemingly meitei festival into a cross-culture event by bringing together members of other ethnic groups in the festivity. Close to 100 guests attended the luncheon held at the prestigious NGV Club premises in the heart of the city. The event was a sincere effort, devoid of any political motive to cohabit and celebrate the harmony within cultural diversity.

True to the essence of Ningol Chakauba, all the ‘ningols’ came adorned in best of their traditional attire- exquisite mix of ‘enaphi’ and choicest ‘Phanek’, some with kids tagged along and others much on their own. Nevertheless, all were welcomed and guided inside, making sure no one entered unattended. The much awaited feast, including classic dishes like ‘sareng thonba, shinju, ataoba thonba any many more were earnestly prepared by the volunteers themselves to retain the traditional touch. Aslo, in the most customary way, organizers ensured all the ‘ningol’ were presented with a small ‘dokhina’(gift) knowing very well that a Ningol Chakaoba is never complete without ‘Dokhina’ presented to the ‘ningol’.

“First time I have attended an event like this and I’ am really happy to be a part. Next year also I wish to attend” a non-meitei guest expressed his views when asked. “Event like this gives us an opportunity to meet, celebrate and introduce our customs and traditions to others” said a lady guest. Many guests echoed same views of replicating the success in coming years and organizing a bigger and better event. – Ms. Roopa, one of the ningols.

Manipuri Students Association Delhi (MSAD) elects its new President, General Secretary and Executive Committee Members

Kuki student from NEFIS elected unopposed to the post of General Secretary of MSAD

Two students from the North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) who have been actively raising issues of North-East youth in Delhi, were elected unopposed to the post of President and General Secretary of Manipuri Students Association Delhi (MSAD) for the year 2013–2014. Chinglen Khumukcham and Thanglunmang Khongsai from NEFIS were elected as MSAD President and General Secretary, respectively.

The election of these two members into the Executive Committee of MSAD is an extremely positive development and is part of the larger process through which NEFIS has been encouraging Manipuri students to raise their issues in connection with the issues and problems faced by other north-east students. It is with this spirit of bringing different north-east communities together on a common set of concerns that NEFIS spearheaded the two-month long agitation against the imposition of a compulsory Hindi language course under Delhi University’s FYUP course. Arguing that such a language imposition was a discrimination against north-east students who have little or no school education in the Hindi language, NEFIS sparked off a militant struggle for withdrawal of the compulsory Hindi language course as it would play havoc with the academic performance of north-east students. By precipitating the struggle, both at the level of Delhi University and at level of the HRD Ministry (Government of India), NEFIS succeeded in getting the adamant University to accept the genuineness of the north-east students’ concerns and to withdraw the paper. Apart from the issue of the compulsory Hindi language paper, NEFIS has also helped mobilize north-east students across the board on glaring problems like police inaction on complaints by north-east youth, police atrocities and also on highly sensitive issues like sexual harassment of north-east women in Delhi.

The concerted efforts of Chinglen Khumukcham and Thanglunmang Khongsai as members of NEFIS have been helping to gradually spread larger sense of solidarity amongst students of different communities/nationalities of North-East . An indication of such solidarity and growing radicalization of youth politics is reflected in the simple fact that for the first time a Kuki student has been elected to the post of MSAD General Secretary. It is hoped that the emerging solidarity amongst different communities of the north-east will prove longstanding, and will be nurtured in letter and spirit by the newly elected Executive Committee of MSAD. The newly elected President and General Secretary hope that MSAD politics is not only radicalized further, but that students of Manipur in large numbers become more active in the progressive and democratic movement existing in Delhi.

NEFIS pledges to extend full support and to work with the newly elected Executive Committee of MSAD in order to usher in an egalitarian, democratic and progressive functioning of society.

Yours Sincerely

Ginminlun Haokip

A joint initiative on city beautification through community participation under the theme “My City, Clean City” taken up by European Manipuri Association (EMA), Korea Manipuri Association (KMA) in collaboration with The Great Thoubal (TGT), Green Revolution Society, Manipur, Thoubal Municipal Council, Kakching Municipal Council, Kakching Bazar Business Welfare Association, the city beautification campaign with installation of hanging flower pots and solid waste bins was held at Thoubal Keithel on July 20 and Kakching Keithel on July 22, 2013.

The idea of this mission My City, Clean City is inspired from the life experiences of the members of European Manipuri Association, London and Korea Manipuri Association, Suwon while living away from home in foreign countries. This initiative is also designed to work as a collective effort by involving local government units such as municipal councils and local NGOs in order to bring changes in the existing norms of that particular locality. Hence this initiative remains supplementary to the existing public and voluntary units operating locally and during such collaborative initiative process changes will be brought to the hearts and mind of local community and keeping one’s environment neat, clean and green become a moral responsibility for the people.

The main concept of this initiative is to get involve the larger community towards the effort of making a green and garbage free city which is a communal place. Earlier, European Manipuri Association initiated such campaign in the historic Khwairamband Ima Keithel, a unique market place run exclusively by woman and the only in the world. ‘Blooming Manipur Project’ was initiated as an experimental project but at the moment it is functioning as an autonomous body after the completion of the project timeline with EMA.

“My City, Clean City” is an initiative taken up collectively by the community of Thoubal and Kakching to make their communal places clean and beautiful. Moreover, it is to instil the spirit of community participation and civic pride for their towns, city and villages.

Regarding the city beautification drive, Okram Bishwajit, Chairperson of European Manipuri Association, in an exclusive interview with Manipur Times, said that the city beautification and cleaning campaign with installation of hanging flower pots of different varieties is a part of the strategy to bring a positive attitude to the mindset of the people of Manipur filled with the reminiscence of conflicts, violence and a society in turmoil. Moreover, it is a mission to save our environment, make the people healthy amidst a healthy environment.

“We, the international Manipuri diaspora, living in European and other developed countries, have experienced the comforts of developed countries. However, we can’t spend our life comfortably there while our people in Manipur are living amidst dust. We like our fellow Manipuris to enjoy the fruits of development. Manipuris living abroad always care for their home state right from human rights to infrastructural development and environment. City beautification program is part of our contribution we can extend to the people of this state”, said Bishwajit.

He said that European Manipuri Association, EMA which is eleven years old has about 62 active members at present. Bishwajit Elangbam , a senior member of EMA living in London first suggested the idea of installing hanging flower baskets in the historic Ima Keithel . After a formal project proposal and general consensus of majority of the members of EMA, the ‘Blooming Manipur Project’ was launched. The initial implementation was done through financial contributions from members and well wishers of EMA. So for the first time, Khwairamband Ima Keithel was adorned with hanging flower pots with the help of volunteers and ex EMA members living in Manipur with the approval and moral support of Imphal Municipality and concerned government departments. The experimental project was planned to run for one year by EMA. It’s been almost two years since its launch and since then the idea, concept and implementation has also evolved through adaptation to local needs.

To keep Thoubal keithel and Kakching keithel neat and clean by decorating it with beautiful hanging flower pots and systematic collection of waste particularly through community participation, European Manipuri Association tied up with Jiten Nongmaithem, Chairman of Korea Manipuri Association to initiate a city beautification program under the theme “My city, Clean City”. The financial, physical and moral contribution from all the members of EMA, KMA, NGOs , members of the local community and both the municipal councils of Thoubal and Kakching has helped in successful implementation of the initiative.

Nahakpam Bidhan, a member of Korea Manipuri Association told Manipur Times that market place is a common place thronged with all sections of the society to sell and buy various things. Making our cities and communal places green, neat and clean becomes quite essential. After all, the changes will bring a positive vibe to the people resulting in good health and a harmonious society. Almost all cities in Korea always look green, neat and clean. As a result of this, the market places look like a garden. The people there have the habit of using dustbins to dispose of wastes and littering is a taboo to them. It’s quite astonishing to see the market scene of Manipur. Almost every empty space is filled with garbage and foul smell of rotten things. People throw away their general refuse and solid waste materials improperly. It’s a disgrace for all of us to showcase our historic Ima Keithel and other markets of the state in its present scenario in the eyes of foreign tourists visiting the state. We need to imitate and see how the other developed countries are trying to keep their markets environment friendly.

He appealed the people to participate in this initiative by sharing their thoughts and by extending full co-operation.
“Inclusion of solid waste management education in school syllabus to bring awareness to the children is the need of the hour. To make a garbage free zone and bring a good environment, awareness on the part of our people is a must”, said Bidhan while assuring all possible help from the side of Korea Manipuri Association to make the state’s markets places always look green and garbage free.

With the theme “My City, Clean City”, the city beautification campaign held at Thoubal Keithel on July 20 last was organised by Thoubal Municipal Council in collaboration with the Great Thoubal, European Manipuri Association, Korea Manipuri Association and Green Revolution Society, Manipur.
T. Ranjit Singh, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Thoubal, Y. Bijen Singh, Chairperson, Thoubal Municipal Council, N. Gitkumar, Director, MAHUD, Government of Manipur, Jugindro Akoijamba, Admin II, NE Region, The Great Thoubal, Okram Bishwajit, Chairperson, Eurppean Manipuri Association and Okram Kenedy Singh, Secretary, Green Revolution Society, Thoubal graced the function as Chief Guest, President, Guest of honours and special Guest respectively.
The campaign held at Kakching Keithel organised on July 22 was under the initiative of European Manipuri Association (EMA) London, Korea Manipuri Association (KMA), Suwon in association with Kakching Municipal Council, Kakching Bazar Business Welfare Association, Library and information Centre, Kakching and The Great Thoubal.

One day awareness campaign on the theme My City, Clean City was also held at the Auditorium of Library and information centre, Kakching to bring awareness to the people about the importance of safeguarding the environment and keeping the city neat and tidy. Kshetrimayum Subadani Devi, Chairperson, Kakching Municiapl Council, N. Shyamchandra, Secretary, The Great Thoubal, M. Brojen, Vice chairperson Kakching Municipal Council graced the occasion as presidium members.

Thanking you in anticipation.

With regards,

PRESS RELEASE: PROTEST AGAINST RAMBAN (J&K) KILLING AT JANTAR MANTAR

New Delhi July 21: On the appeal of Save Sharmila Campaign and Mission Bhartiyam, a protest was organised against the Ramban Massacre by BSF that claimed 6 lives and injured 44 others.

Save Sharmila Solidarity Campaign is a nation-wide campaign in support of Irom Sharmila and for the repeal of the draconian law of AFSPA. For two years, it has been working to spread awareness, mobilise support and generate political pressure to repeal the law. It is an umbrella of many civil society organisations. The protest was joined and supported by many progressive groups namely AISA, Campus Front of India, Jamia Teachers’ Solidarity Association, NCHRO, PUCL, J&K RTI and PUDR among several others.

The BSF had opened fired on a mob that was protesting against the alleged manhandling by BSF personnel of a local imam, followed by the reported desecration of the Holy Quran the previous night. The following morning, a group of protestors had reached a BSF post in Gool in Ramban district and they were responded with a massacre.

The organisers believe that this shameful and unacceptable incident called Ramban massacre is, however, not a sudden reaction to the protest.

“The Ramban incident is a prima facie case of coercive method adopted by the security personals.  It highlights the highhanded attitude of the security forces that they have acquired over a period time due to their absolute powers and the impunity granted to them”, said Ravi Nitesh, founder of Mission Bhartiyam.

“This protest is about this unacceptable massacre, it is to show our solidarity with the victims and demand justice but it has been organised to attack the root. We know that this incident is not the first incident in Kashmir. These inhuman incidents are quite frequent in Kashmir and in states of North East because draconian laws like AFSPA breed them. We are here today to appeal for humanity, to demand the repeal of AFSPA.” remarked Devika Mittal, core member of Save Sharmila Solidarity Campaign.

The organizers believe that real justice for the victims of the massacre will be to attack the “root” cause i.e. militarization and draconian laws like AFSPA that has led to fake encounters, rape and killings of civilians.

“It is unfortunate that these incidents are happening in the World’s largest “democracy”. It is unfortunate that these killings are justified in the name of upholding the ‘integrity’ of the nation. We feel that development, basic civil rights, basic amenities and justice should be used to uphold the ‘integrity’ not torture.” said V Arun Kumar of AISA.

“There is a long list of incidents where security personals of almost all wings have violated the human rights in J&K.  There have been fake encounters, torture, rapes etc. in the state but nothing has been done to prosecute the culprits till now. So there is every reason to believe that like other similar incidents before, there will be no action taken by the government against security personals in Ramban massacre too. In such situation the only option left for the democratic forces to raise voice against such injustices”, said Mohammad Tanveer of Campus Front of India.

Asad Ashraf from Jamia Solidarity Students told that “unless and until there is demilitarization, the situation will not improve in J&K. We must know that dissatisfaction is a primary reason for increase in insurgent activities so it’s high time that we think about “their” welfare, not “ours”.

Kaashif who was here from Chhatra Vimarsh magazine, remarked that “How do we take pride in being the world’s largest “democracy” when democracy is not extended to all states within our own country.”

Manjit from PUDR remarked, “It is tragic that Kashmiris are looked upon as “anti-national”, as “anti-Indian”. It is true that there are anti-state slogans in Kashmir but this is because the only symbol of India i.e. the army has created hell in their land”.

The protest was supported by renowned Activists like Gautam Navlakha, Prashant Bhushan, Manisha Sethi and many others. Though they could not be present. they had The protest was joined in by many people from Kashmir and even from states of North-East.

Dr, Muzaffar Bhat of J&K chapter of RTI remarked, “This incident happened in Jammu which is seen to be more “peaceful”. So there cannot be any justification. It shows that the entire Kashmir is under attack.  ”

The organisations demands the repeal of AFSPA, it demands the de-militarisation of all civilian areas in the AFSPA-imposed states, to investigate all crimes committed under it, to prosecute the guilty persons, compensate the victims and just initiatives to improve the situation in J&K and in the states of North-East. They will be submitting a memorandum to the Prime Minister, to the Home Ministry and the Ministry of Defence.

PRESS RELEASE

10th July 2013

The All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM) would like to draw the kind attention of the Government of Manipur in the matter pertaining to the relaxation of upper age limit from the proposed 30 years to 35 years in the up-coming Manipur Civil Services combined competitive Examination 2013.

It is disappointing for many aspiring candidates that in almost 13 years ie. From the 2000 to 2013, Manipur Civil Services Combined Competitive Examinations have been successfully conducted only twice by the Manipur public Services Commission.

Therefore, the eligible candidates have managed to get only two attempts so far. As a matter of fact, many aspiring candidates have already barred the age limit due to periodical recruitment which in fact is expected to be conducted every year like UPSC. Most significantly in most of the States of India, the upper age limit for appearing in Civil Services Examination has been increased from 35- 40 years and above. For instance, UP-40 yrs, Bihar- 40 yrs,Rajasthan-45 yrs, Haryana-45 yrs, West Bengal-40 yrs, Jharkhand- 40 yrs, Punjab- 37yrs.

Considering the increasing number of educated youth in the State with remote chances for job applications due to absence of private sector in the State and irregular conduct of such Examination in Manipur, relaxation of upper age limit should be 35 years and above like other State of India. This will certainly generate more opportunities for maximum number of educated youth to participate in the up- coming Manipur Civil Services combined competitive Examination 2013.

The genuine demand of the Sons & Daughters of the soil may therefore be kindly considered and do the needful in the larger interest of the educated youths irrespective of all communities living in the Hills and Plain of Manipur. To this end, the ATSUM as an apolitical Students’ Union is once again constrained to bring the grievances of the aspiring candidates before the SPF Govt. for kind consideration to relax the upper age limit from the proposed 30- 35 years for the well being of the State.

(MICAH KAMEI)

I am deeply pained to hear the death of legendary martial artist of 60s, Mr Jim Kelly, who starred with another legendary martial artist, Bruce Lee, in the eternal 1973 Hollywood block buster martial arts action film – “ENTER THE DRAGON.”

Jim Kelly (behind) with Bruce Lee

Jim Kelly (behind) with Bruce Lee

James Milton “Jim” “the Dragon” Kelly born on May 5, 1946 in Millersburg, Kentucky was an American athlete, actor and martial artist who rose to fame in the early 1970s. He was best known for his performance as Williams in the 1973 film “ENTER THE DRAGON” that shook the world by storm.

Kelly studied Shorin-ryu Karate and Okinawa Karate. Parker Shelton and Gordon Doversola were among others under whose guidances he studied Karate. During the early 1970′s, Jim Kelly became one of the most decorated world karate champions in the sport. In 1971, Kelly won four prestigious championships that same year, most notably, the World Middleweight Karate title at the 1971 Long Beach International Karate Championships.

“ENTER THE DRAGON” was his second film and first starring with Bruce Lee. He was so impressed and thrilled in working with Bruce Lee in the “ENTER THE DRAGON.” He said, “’Bruce was just incredible, absolutely fantastic. I learned so much from working with him. I probably enjoyed working with Bruce more than anyone else I’d ever worked with in movies because we were both martial artists. And he was a great, great martial artist. It was very good.”

Kelly died of cancer on June 29, 2013.

The death of this iconic and legendary martial artist has brought a void in the world of martial arts and that will be difficult to fill in years to come.

I, on behalf of the Muaythai Federation of India (MFI) and my own behalf, conveyed the profound condolence to the bereaved family members of this Legend.
RIP.

For Immediate Release:
7 July 2013, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh.

In what can be termed as one of the most shocking incident, where Gogon Naorem, a native of Tentha Khongbal Leikai, Manipur, presently working and residing in Hyderabad was mercilessly knocked down by a speeding car on 1st July, 2013 as he and a friend crosses the road in Banjara Hills, one of the upmarket commercial and residential hub. In this inhuman act, the driver of the car did not stop to look back but sped away leaving Gogon seriously injured. His friend escaped with minor injuries.

Press Release and Request for Support – HYMS – Gogon Naorem

He was rushed by bystanders to the nearest hospitals but since he didn’t have a support system or an insurance policy, he was forced to re-admit at a “cheaper hospital” in Secunderabad.

His condition remains critical and has been in Intensive Care Unit since the day he was admitted. The doctors at the hospital have kept him under observation. He underwent severe trauma with massive internal haemorrhage on the right side of the brain. According to the doctors, he has fractured the skull at three different places and a surgery may be required at some point. He hasn’t regained consciousness since the accident.

Over the past week, Hyderabad Manipuri Society (HYMS) and many well-wishers have been visiting the hospital and extended all possible assistance. But the prolonged stay at the hospital has increasingly burdened the family back in Manipur. Gogon’s mother is a small time fish vendor while his father, in poor health, teaches a few students. The inability to support their son at this current juncture has severely impacted them.

Three days ago, HYMS, initiated a fund drive to support Gogon and the response has been tremendous. Various people from across different location contributed generously and the first instalment was handed over to Rakesh Naorem, Gogon’s uncle, who travelled to Hyderabad to be with Gogon. The sad part, though is, the money collected is just enough to cover the hospital expenses for three days. Therefore, HYMS, will continue the fund drive so that it can extend its support to Gogon.

It is our humble request to all of you who is reading this message, please think and extend your support for Gogon.

We sincerely thank you to the many individuals who have contributed to the first round. Please don’t stop just yet; Gogon is not out of the woods yet.

Thank you and we look forward to your prayers and support. Let’s join hands.

Please contact HYMS via the following channels if you would like to contribute to help Gogon:

27.6.2013
PRESS RELEASE
North-East Forum for International Solidarity had been running a campaign against the compulsory imposition of Hindi in Delhi University, on the students from the ‘North-East’. A large number of students held several protest demonstration both at Delhi University and outside the ministry of HRD. After the protests, both the University of Delhi and the HRD ministry had assured that the clause of compulsory imposition of Hindi would be removed. The protests had been peaceful and democratic in its tenor. But today, on 27.6.2013 three activists of NEFIS were picked up by the police on the basis of an FIR framed on 1.4.2013 and slapped with non-bail able sections. The police have acted, in what we consider, extremely vindictive and conspiratorial manner, sensing that if they had arrested these activists while the campaign was on, there would surely have been strident protests from the students. They deliberately waited till the summer vacations, when most of the students have gone back home, to make the arrests, so that protests do not happen. We unequivocally condemn this atrocious act. NEFIS calls upon all the people of the North-East to rally around the arrested activists and intensify their struggle against the Indian state for their democratic rights.

Lei-Ingkhol Cannot be Defended
Lei-Ingkhol Knba Ngamloidoureh

CPDM Press Statement
16th June 2013

ENGLISH: Lei-Ingkhol will be destroyed in the name of Capital Project. The contractors are the rulers; the contradiction between contractors’ project and human rights has become clearer. Yesterday, 15th June 2013, a team of the civil servants of the Government of Manipur had intruded at Lei-Ingkhol with five truckloads of police. It seems the government of Manipur had lost democratic legitimacy; widespread tendency of using muscle power on several issues has been exposed once again in Lei-Ingkhol. How long will it be militantly ruled? In the name of combing operation they had everyone to remain indoors and had forced surveyed every house. Some of them had verbally intimated that eviction order would be issued by 28 June and that everyone must vacate the village by 5 July. Since 2005 till date the government had not spelt out anything about better compensation and rehabilitation packages to the villagers. There hasn’t been any democratic process to come to a consensus with the villagers to be affected by the Capital Project. As a result of bribing few handpicked which had played divisive role among the villagers, and on the other had due to threat at gun point by the police, the residents had developed fear to the extent of unwilling to release a press statement to defend the village. There hasn’t been any open support to the cause of the villagers from the Wangkhei Assembly Constituency MLA Y. Irabot. Yesterday itself, the preexisting Joint Action Committee was dissolved, and a committee to demand alternative arrangement was form with electoral politician Okram Henry, a nephew of Chief Minister Ibobi, as advisor. To what extent will Okram Henry with his contractor background be able to extend full sincerity and consistent commitment? Having observed the post displacement situation of Yaifa Leikai, Loktak Fishers, Mapithel Dam, Khuga Dam, Kabo Leikai, etc, it is doubtful that the Lei-Ingkhol villagers would be provided a better alternative arrangement. Since the villagers are disunited wholehearted support of Civil Society Organisations is also doubtful. How far the leaders of the committee constituted yesterday would be able to withstand on the basis of correct ideology, practical tactics and full commitment remains a question. There are possibilities that a few will get opportunity at the const of the destructions of the livelihood of the rest. Under such circumstances the contractors, bureaucrats and police had constituted a flank and suppress democratic voices. It has become very clear that there is project versus rights under the colonial Land Acquisition Act 1894. It has become certain that to serve the vested interest of the contractors, in the name of construction of bureaucratic quarters, under the protection of the police Lei-Ingkhol will be destroyed. Ideologically and psychologically subjected, being disunited and feared; the villagers of the livelihood of the Lei-Inkhgol villagers will be uprooted without proper compensation and rehabilitation. What can be done when the revolutionary movement has been deliberately delayed?
