With a strong support from its members and well wishers, HYMS brought together football teams from NE community. This football cup was an important event of HYMS annual calendar.

Hyderabad Manipuri Society (HYMS) was formed after a detailed discussion and coming together of likeminded people. It was inaugurated formally in University of Hyderabad football ground in 2011, June. It was attended by nearly 200 Manipuri residents of Hyderabad. HYMS was formed with an aim to set up a platform for the people of Manipur who are currently residing in and around Hyderabad. HYMSs’ main objective is to provide better connectivity among Manipuris in Hyderabad and it acts as an agent for such a thought out connectivity. It also extends support when required to this group of people apart from organizing cultural event, community awareness programmes and sports activities. With such activities and objectives in mind, HYMS aims to spread peace, harmony, mutual respect of ‘differences’ between different communities.

HYMS maintains an annual calendar. In the last eight months since its formation, HYMS has managed to rise up to many occasions which deserve appreciation. In its infancy period, HYMS has oranised a sit-in-protest against the draconian AFSPA (1958) on 2nd Oct. 2011 at Ambedkar Statue, Tank Bund, Hyderabad in collaboration with National Alliance for People Movement : http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-andhrapradesh/article2507525.ece

A week after this event, on 4th November, 2011, HYMS collaborated with the Manipuri students of University of Hyderabad to show solidarity to Irom Sharmila and to celebrate her Iron will as she completed 11th years on 4th November. PRESS RELEASE – BOOK LAUNCH

CHEITHAROL KUMBABA: THE ROYAL CHRONICLE OF MANIPUR

Book launch – "Cheitharol Kumbaba: The Royal Chronicle of Manipur"

4 February 2012, Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network & India International Centre had jointly organized Manipur – Past And Present: Panel Discussion & Book Launch “Cheitharol Kumbaba: The Royal Chronicle Of Manipur” written by Shri Nepram Bihari at Conference Room No 1, India International Centre 40 Max Mueller Marg, New Delhi on 30 January 2012.

Smt Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan, Member of Parliament, was the Chief Guest of the event, Mr. B G Verghese, renowned writer, chaired the event, Shri Pradyot Deb Burman, Head of Royal House of Tripura and Editor, The Northeast Today was the Guest of Honour of the event and esteemed panellists of the event include Dr.Aparna Basu, Professor, Delhi University(retired), Ms. Priyanka Thakur, Lecturer, Delhi University.

The “Cheitharol Kumbaba: The Royal Chronicle of Manipur” is a monumental work covering the history of Manipur, right upto the modern period. Providing a detailed month-by-month record of the rule of no less than 76 Kings, it is a formidable reference history of this colourful State, which continues to remain in turmoil. The subject covers every aspect of Manipur and throws much light on relation with neighbouring areas.

According to Shri O.N. Shrivastava, Former Governor, Nagaland &  Manipur, “Dealing chronologically with the life, times and event during the reign of 76 kings-from lord Pakhangba (33 A.D.) to Maharajah Bodhchandra(1955 A.D.) it is by any standard an exhaustive compilation, replete with footnotes, glossary, references and agreements including the one between Maharaja Bodhchandra and government of India. The book fills a historic void and needs to be valued as integral to the continuing cultural freedom of our country. The author by translating Manipur’s history from the Meitei script into English has made almost 2000 years of developments in Manipur available to the global reader”.

Author: Shri Nepram Bihari

Mr B G Verghese, renowned writer who  chaired the session and gave a welcome address and said that the Northeast India was rich in indigenous chronicles which dates back 2000 years back like the “Cheitharol Kumbaba” (Manipur), “Rajmala” (Tripura) etc. which were not taught as history as they should be. He suggested that eminent historians addressed the issue to the historical congress to start a discussion of Northeast history and let those books be brought forward.

Shri (Dr) Kapila Vatsyayan, Honourable Member of Parliament, addressed that she was there to talk about Manipur and its importance. And added Manipur was an important state of India having rich tradition and culture. She talked about the bonfire of religious manuscript .And added that those were the records of Manipuri History and its religion and that eventually led Manipuri people to adopt Vaishnavism culture. She addressed that the work taken by Shri Nepram Bihari was important to highlight the necessity of eminent scholars to find solutions and truth.

Shri Nepram Bihari, Writer “Cheitharol Kumbaba: The Royal Chronicle of Manipur” said, “With due obeisance to the Almighty on this important occasion of “Discussion of Past and Present of Manipur with book launch of “Cheitharol Kumbaba(the Royal Chronicle of Manipur)”, I consider myself supremely fortunate to make my dream a reality by launching a traditional history book. Thinking- past history  of ancient people should be a lesson for the present generation and also for enabling people of other races could understand the  culture, custom, foreign and internal development policy.  This book is a record of past event dealing on political, economic, social revolution sectors, on foreign relation with neighbouring countries.”

Shri Pradyot Manikya Deb Burman, Head of the Royal House of Tripura stated that the history of Northeast was very little known to the rest of the world but also within northeast India region. And called upon several Northeast state to start exploring history of their neighbours order to understand each other better. He said that Manipur was always been close to him since his grandmother was from Manipur.

Dr Aparna Basu, Lecturer, Delhi University(retired) addressed that “Cheitharol Kumbaba” was like a dairy of the then kings of Manipur for their achievements, politics, diplomacy and lifestyles which majorly emphasised on 18th , 19th and  20th  century. She said that it would be a good source to know more about Manipur and its culture and tradition which was not much known to the rest of the world.

Ms Priyanka Thakur Lecturer, Delhi University said Manipur remained as periphery of history and have not been discovered and discussed much. She said the main reason of it would be the lack of sources and the way the history of such area had been interpreted. She said that the book gave a new way to look at Manipur and its culture.

The event was ended successfully with meaningful notes and views from the panel as well as from the participants. Most of the panel agreed that the history of Northeast India is till little known to mainland India as well as within the Northeast India itself and suggested that it is high time for Northeast people to start including its history in shortened version in NCERT syllabus as it is lacking it as well as to start research and documentation of history of their neighbouring states.

Fried fish, chicken soup & a Premiere show

Documentary on Manipur cinema ‘Fried fish, chicken soup & a Premiere show to be screened at Mumbai International film festival 2012

Set in Manipur, this is a road film travelling across a century to collate the portrait of a film and its family, a cinema and its citizens.

Historically an independent kingdom through most of its history, Manipur had a controversial merger with India in the mid 20th century. It has been wracked by state and non-state militancy ever since and has little to show for being part of a developing country like India. But it has a cinema.

Fried Fish, Chicken Soup and a Premiere Show journeys with a Manipuri feature film unit through the landscape of picturesque hills and narrative traditions. As technology and army fatigues permeate the terrain, the people continuously re-configure the narrative inheritance and the strategies to chronicle the contemporary. Traversing through various sites – the home based filmmaking convention, roads as locations in Manipuri films, the community imposed censorship and finally the phenomenal love for cinema, the film brings forth the very specific story of Manipur and its public culture.

The film directed by Mamta Murthy and produced by Majlis Production is of 90mins duration and has language in manipuri with english subtitles.

About the Director – Mamta Murthy

Mamta Murthy is a filmmaker, photographer and curator based in Mumbai/Bombay. Her first film, Colours Black, won the Grand Prix at 9th Biennial of Moving Images, Geneva in 2001. CHEITHAROL KUMBABA: THE ROYAL CHRONICLE OF MANIPUR

Date: Monday, 30th January 2012

Time:  6.30pm

Venue: Conference Room No 1, India International Centre

40 Max Mueller Marg (Near Lodhi Garden), New Delhi 110003

30th January 2012:  Manipur is presently is one of the most conflict-ridden states in India. Over 20,000 people have been killed in the last five decades. Today more than 30 armed groups operate in Manipur – ranging from small outfits to organizations with several thousand members. Besides them, dozens of battalions of the Indian Army and several units of Indian paramilitary forces are stationed throughout the state at the Indo-Burma-border.

However, very few know that the state was an independent kingdom with 3000 years of written history. Manipur literal meaning Mani- Gems and Pur-land is a beautiful state that nestles deep within a lush green corner of North East India. Late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, former Prime Minister of India, paid a fitting tribute by describing it as “Jewel of India”. It is surrounded by blue hills with an oval shaped valley at the centre, rich in art and tradition and surcharged with nature’s pristine glory. Manipur lies on a melting pot of culture. It is birth place of Polo, a home for rich handloom and handicraft products.

The Cheitharol Kumbaba: The Royal Chronicle of Manipur is a monumental work covering the history of Manipur, right upto the modern period. Providing a detailed month-by-month record of the rule of no less than 76 Kings, it is a formidable reference history of this colourful State, which continues to remain in turmoil!

The subject covers every aspect of Manipur and throws much light on relation with neighbouring areas namely Burma, Tripura and Assam as well as more distant areas like Bengal and Vindravan. Wildlife and shikar were always a popular sport with royalty all over the world, but one is amazed with the frequency of references about tigers and the mention of capture of 63 elephants in a single episode in 1780 Saka (1858 AD) during the reign of Maharaja Churachand Singh. Tiger conservationists will be no less alarmed when they compare today’s situation with the sizable tiger population of the past. There is also mention of a Raja of Assam seeking the then Manipur King’s help with a physician for his prolonged illness in 1770 Saka (1848 AD), and being cured in 6 months time.

No less surprising is the reference to very frequent earthquake and the number of lunar eclipses. The Manipuries were always keen sportsmen and their love for various sports and the game of polo are often mentioned in this volume. The accurate prophecies of Manipuri astrologers are highlighted as compared to their counterparts elsewhere. All in all, this is a volume with a mine of information which will throw much light on many burning subjects of today, whether historical or political, and these are aptly explained in the Foreword and Preface by two eminent personalities.

In addition the opinion of Marcus Thompson, MBA, BA, M.Phil., Oxford, UK, sums up the importance of this work.“As a foreigner and visitor to Manipur, interested in its history, I have been limited to reading the memories of British Political Agents (which in themselves are fascinating) but give a very one-sided perspective, and only one of events during the British period. Nepram Bihari’s book, The Royal Chronicle of Manipur changes this. The Chronicle focuses on events at Court, political and military upheavals, births, deaths, ceremonies… and tiger hunts. It also records other notable events, like earthquakes, droughts, floods and food shortages. There are elements of social, subaltern history also included, recording what ordinary Manipuries and their neighbours were doing. This translation into English makes available an unrivalled record of events to a wider audience.”

Also according to Former Governor of Nagaland and Manipur, O.N. Shrivastava “Dealing chronologically with the life, times and event during the reign of 76 kings-from lord Pakhangba (33 A.D.) to Maharajah Bodhchandra (1955 A.D.) it is by any standard an exhaustive compilation, replete with footnotes, glossary, references and agreements including the one between Maharaja Bodh Chandra and government of India. The book fills a historic void and needs to be valued as integral to the continuing cultural freedom of our country. The author by translating Manipur’s history from the Meitei script into English, has made almost 2000 years of developments in Manipur available to the global leader.”

On 30th January 2012, Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network & India International Centre are jointly organising Manipur – Past And Present: Panel Discussion & Book Launch Cheitharol Kumbaba: The Royal Chronicle Of Manipur written by Shri Nepram Bihari, at Conference Room No 1, India International Centre 40 Max Mueller Marg, New Delhi- 3, 6.30 pm.
