Sikkim to introduce model farming practices in its field

May 13,  1:46 PM

With an aim to rejuvenate the dwindling yield of the Large Cardamom in Sikkim, the largest producer of this spice in the country, the State Government has decided to introduce model farming practices in this field. This will be done in some parts of the North, South and West districts. The model farming practices have been recommended by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and the Spices Board.

AIR correspondent reports that A study reveals that the Cardamom farmers in Sikkim are mostly doing traditional farming where almost no manure is used and no weeding is done. Now the State Horticulture Department is going for modern techniques where the emphasis will be on clean farms without weeds, while ensuring proper irrigation facilities during the long dry winter season.

On the other hand, the North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation ’NERAMAC’ has succeeded, to a large extent, in ensuring remunerative price by way of auction to the Sikkim farmers for large cardamom. Some eighteen metric tones of large cardamom has been auctioned at fourteen state level auctions held at Rangpo in East district, ever since ’NERAMAC’ initiated the auction of the large cardamom in Sikkim on 16th November 2010.

The NERAMAC also plans to set up a two crore rupees E-auction centre at Rangpo for facilitating an online global market for Sikkim’s large cardamom farmers.

Talking to mediapersons here, Gaikhangam, also a senior Congress leader, asked how a state with a geographical area of 22,327 sq km could be divided.

“It is the homeland of more than 32 communities. How can one say it is the land of the Meiteis or the Nagas or the Kukis? Manipur is the homeland of all communities,” he said. “It is a democratic country but if a community raises a demand, it should not make another one suffer,” he said.

To put it rather simplistically, the absence of an engaged state in the early years of independence bred insurgents, and army excesses to quell them led to further disenchantment
The uproar over the death of 19-year old Richard Loitam under mysterious circumstances in Bangalore and the suicide of 21-year old Dana Sangma in Delhi has brought into sharp focus the Indian heartland’s strained relationship with the Northeast. Loitam hails from Manipur and Sangma is the niece of the Meghalaya chief minister, and many see both as victims of racial discrimination.

Lifting Afspa not feasible, military chiefs tell Antony

Arackaparambil Kurien Antony – Defence Minister of India

Shishir Gupta, Hindustan Times ,New Delhi, May 08, 2012

The Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC) has conveyed to defence minister AK Antony that partial lifting of the (Afspa) at Srinagar, Ganderbal, Budgam, Jammu and Kathua was not feasible as it would give terrorists an opportunity to target its communications and logistics line to Leh sector and the forward areas on the Line of Contol (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.

During a meeting between the three armed forces chiefs, Antony and national security advisor SS Menon at South Block in April-end, the armed forces said lifting of Afspa would release the pressure on around 300-350 terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir. They said the move would be counter-productive in the present scenario, with 42 terrorists camp still active in PoK, and around 2,000-2,500 terrorists awaiting their chance to enter the country and build up strength across the LoC.

After hearing the chiefs out, Antony made it known that no decision on lifting Afspa would be made without taking the forces on board. However, home minister P Chidambaram and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah are in favour of lifting Afspa from the five districts in the state, and have already executed a plan to remove 54 paramilitary bunkers from Srinagar as part of confidence-building measures.

Maneesh Chhibber : New Delhi, Thu May 10 2012, 00:50 hrs – Indian Express

On Sunday, members of both houses of Parliament will get the opportunity to hear views on the state of India’s democracy from two veterans who have literally seen it all — Rishang Keishing and Resham Lal Jangade, the only surviving members of the first Lok Sabha (1952-57).

Keishing, 93, a former chief minister of Manipur, is now a member of Rajya Sabha. Jangade, a close associate of Babu Jagjivan Ram, lives in a small, two-room home near the Raj Bhawan in Raipur. Speaker Meira Kumar visited him during a visit to Chhattisgarh’s capital in January.

President Pratibha Patil will felicitate both veterans at a ceremony to commemorate the 60th anniversary of India’s Parliament.

MYSORE: Seeking a thorough probe into the death of 19-year-old Manipur student Richard Loitam, who was found dead in mysterious conditions in Bangalore three weeks ago, around 100 Manipuri students in Mysore took out a silent rally here on Wednesday.

After the rally concluded at Oval Ground, the students garlanded the photo of Richard Loitam and mourned for 15 minutes by lighting candles.

“The rally is not in favor of any community. Three weeks ago, Richard Loitam was allegedly murdered but the process of taking action against the suspects is very slow,” Mongbi Jam, II PU student, said.
